Description:
Another of my experiments in trying to create acoustic abstract music. I play 5-string banjo and guitar and there's even a mandolin in there. The mandolin is pretty unrecognizable. Then there's a bunch of loops. It actually started out with one of the Garageband demo songs that got taken apart and twisted and I added a bunch of instruments from the new Boldt instrument pack, specifically the Asian Kit and the Junk Kit. The Junk Kit is especially cool, with great samples and they are nicely varied. It's a shame they don't work in Logic, I guess, but I managed something sort of twisted using GB4. It's really just an experiment but I wanted to post it so I could get past it.

I love Abigail Washburn! I am flattered with the comparison. I wasn't thinking so much about her with this song, more like The Books, but the thoughtfullness is appreciated.

It's good to... &mdash 06/24/08 - 07:30:49 AM
...get past these things. Restless minds and all that. Like I said in the comment on your last song, it's the clarity of the recording that always impresses me. It allows room for all the weirdness to exist in its own space. I find creating "atmosphere" really difficult but you' ve got it licked.

Hmmm.... &mdash 06/24/08 - 03:31:36 PM
...sounds a bit like a tune I heard on the local R&B station...

;)

I love experiments...I would deem this one a success, Jim. You've proved your hypothesis...

The banjo's a great anchor...

Cool &mdash 06/25/08 - 08:25:09 AM
experiment Jim.. might have to get meeself that junk kit ..

The banjo does really add a nice warped vibe .. kinda all hazy, staggering and fumbling for loose change ..

Didn't spot the mandolin .. where? lol

I told you the mandolin was unrecognizable, and it's be hard to pick it out. There's actually two tracks of mando, but they are both overwhelmed by a plug-in called Spectral Dronemaker which is a free plugin by Michael Norris. I'm not sure of the url at the moment, but there's a whole suite of spectral imaging plugins that this guy came up with and they are all pretty twisted. The Dronemaker is my favorite because you can pick modes and such and it really does what it says, it makes a drone out of whatever sound you stick it on. Fun stuff!

Acoustic new music &mdash 06/26/08 - 07:41:47 AM
I really like the way you're taking yourself (and the rest of us with you) outside the usual limits of "genre-music".

This sets a really interesting and inquisitive mood - makes me want to delve into LP8 now that it's finally arrived.

Lovely sound reproduction Jim.

Logic is great! &mdash 06/26/08 - 09:25:46 AM
But this is all Garageband4. For some reason I thought these Boldt instruments weren't working in Logic. I downloaded them and opened Logic, and I got some sort of error message. So then I opened up GB and there they were. so I decided to open up one of the GB demo songs sitting around on one of my drives, this one being a short hip-hop demo so it had some vocal tracks and some scratching and the like. I dumped a bunch of tracks and put on some effects on others, chopped things up and so on, and then recorded a few new tracks, and mixed this all in GB. Really pretty quick, as these things go, for me, anyway. I could open this up in Logic now for a remix, I suppose, since the Boldt3 instruments now seem to be working in Logic as they should, but I probably won't unless I decide to do a whole album of these experiments, of which I am collecting a lot of these instrumentals now.

The way you move so many sounds and timbres around the "trunk" of the guitar and banjo produces a neat effect. I agree that the junk kit is a great set of unusual percussion noises. Nice work.
