Description:
I recently found my way to Mitchell's A Cappella Cult of Anubis by way of Karmatoburn's excellent remix - and couldn't help but give it a spin. It's a great track with some truly inspired lyrics - I just hope I did it justice.

Production note: Mitchell posted that his track was 150bpm. I decided to take a low and slow approach to the backing so I set my clock at 75bpm and got down to work.

Thanks Mitchell - for the opportunity to flex my beats.

Lyrics:
I stand in a hall of mirrors
The right path in the wrong direction
No protection from the self that I try to hide
Or these corny cliches that I try to ride
Is it pride that compels me to refrain from asking
to be rescued from myself in the heat of passion
The subtraction of mind from the man is no man at all
Yeah I planned to ball
Champagne kisses looking good and standing tall
While some are jealous and demand I fall
Green zealots making moves to one day be in command of all
I'm a door in a land of walls
Othello in a land of Pauls
Some would argue I'm no man at all
I cant rely on my fans at all
And refuse to play this game like a baby on my hands to crawl
If it were up to the industry they'd ban us all
No reliance on the self they'd destroy all faith
And dangle falsehood in front of our face and hope we take the bait
false prophets in a land of credit cards and real estate
I search for the realest state within
Drinking from an angel's tear
None of us are strangers here
Most of us have anger where they've tried to instill fear
I cant afford to deviate
It is up to me to mediate
What's here and what's beyond the plate
This might not be food for thought
Depending on your school of thought
Or if you fought the lies they taught
Caught in the crossroads
We're all old
the soul lived before there was an earth to spin
Our death is just a birth again
I have a message for the planet, so I hope its worth the pen
And paper that I used to write it
If I'm on a tangent it because sometimes I get excited
Life is a party, to tell the truth you're all invited
Bring your own hope and some for us that don't have it
Bring your own hope and some for us that don't have it...

Thats the internal battle every man has got to face
Shake that devil off and let your true self take its place
Mankind
Man blind
Man find one's self in a world that has seemed to have lost its damn mind
It's not hard to understand mine
But sometimes the prose looses me
I choose to be
The few of us that would refuse to be
Devil's advocate
I'd rather stand and battle it
Outnumbered and surrounded I am still willing to challenge it
I have a lineage that I have got to try an keep in tact
My legacy in melody, turntables, and speaking rap
every cell and particle
Defines the ontological
Defies negative molecules
I wish the way I felt could truly become apart of you
The best that I can do is make this music from the heart for you

Thank you very much for what you've done. I am impressed and amazed at what so many have done with this song. Nice combination of sounds and it even sounds like its getting slower. Well done.

Yet another awesome remix on Mitchell's great lyrics. I'm digging the tempo on this and the echo on the vox sounds great.
Really enjoyed this mix.

I'm glad the fast against slow experiment worked for you. I doubled Mitchell's vocal and slipped them 1/32 apart for a short slap effect and then grabbed a word here and there with track echo for the heavy effect.

Sounds good &mdash 06/25/08 - 07:08:35 AM
Not really a hip hop man, but this sounds great. How on earth you got some of those really low notes on the bass track I don't know. Excellent dynamics throughout. Good stuff

I'm not hometo get the name of the bass &mdash 06/25/08 - 11:47:37 AM
voice I used with my midi controller - but it was very deep. I had to mess with the EQ so it played right in the mix. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

cool &mdash 06/25/08 - 12:47:24 PM
love the slow track behind the rhymes. if the melvins did hip hop it would be something like this. there's some really neat little things going on here, excellent job Kevin.

Beats &mdash 06/25/08 - 02:23:42 PM
The original track is so good its hard to improve on, but you have added an interesting twist. I like how you do most of this with the snare and the high hat. Good choice of beats and incidentals.

Thanks
Bill

I got lucky hunting beats and then I heard that high hat snare thing and pulled it out to work with. Good ears.

Up front .. &mdash 06/29/08 - 06:57:33 PM
.. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but I enjoyed the original of this and have to admit I downloaded it with the idea of doing something with it. It soon became obvious that I didn't have a clue where to start in this style.

Bud, you've given the original some groove and character which lifts it to another level. I'm impressed.

Cheers,
Neil
