Description:
Hope you have vacation, and have a good time and some TIME to listen, because this is a 17 minutes track. If you choose to give it an ear, then also give it some patience because it is kind of getting better and better as it proceeds. Headphones recommended.

Sometimes we experience bright moments. This one is the brightest so far for this band. Even though the track consists of four different tunes, it comprises one long improvisation without any cuts or editing whatsoever. Here is what is happening:

1) We enter in the middle of an improvisation. Björn is having a good time on his fiddle, while Björna and Johannes is backing on acoustic guitars. Then when the theme ends Björn (fiddle) starts playing a melody and we soon recognize it as the:

2) Auld Lang Syne. This is the only cover of the four pieces. The other melodies are made up on the fly. And in line with the strange logics that has evolved for this orchestra the tunes are not taken up again at a later stage, they are only played once, (that is; so far, it is not any expressed rule). And at the ending of Auld Lang Syne and a short moment of silence, Björna starts out playing:

3) A "something" .. just a nice picking theme .. Johannes follows directly with some counterpointing picking .. and Björn soon falls in with violine. This tune sounds as if it was made up and arranged beforhand, but it is not. It is created exactly here as you hear it. At the end of that one, the same thing again; a short silence and then:

4) Björna starts out playing a "something" .. just some nice picking .. then Johannes follows with counterpointing guitar bumping .. and Björn falls in with violine. The tune has a different character than the previous. Even this tune has some passages that sounds like they were made up beforehand, but it is just the docility in this band that makes it. And that is part of why I - Johannes - JUST LOVE this band.

We could have chopped the recording into four peaces. One reason we instead choose to post it exactly as it was made, is that the tunes as they came naturally when we made them, are kind of natural to listen to in this way too. The time between tunes, the succession, all of it has some musical quality and naturality and it builds like a suite.

Apart from the instruments you can hear Johannes' kids trying to get attention on a few places. And on one occasion Björn is giving chord direction.

Photo: Unfortunately we don't have any photo of the band with Björn fiddeling. Here he is on acoustic bass instead (right).

You guys are amazing &mdash 06/26/08 - 03:46:59 PM
You made this up on the fly, in one take? Superb playing and how you intuit each other amazes me. Thank you for the description; it is so interesting to read how it all came about and who is playing what. The spontaneous voice of a child? at the end of Auld Lang Syne made me take my headphones off and ask "What?" because it sounded like someone was right in the room with me! I love your home recordings. So sweet, so natural, so good! Kudos to all.:-)

Just makes me envious guys! &mdash 06/26/08 - 09:59:18 PM
You must be having so much fun in this band Johannes - it's one thing to play wonderful solo music, but sharing the playing with friends makes it a special experience.

There is clearly a real understanding between you which makes the music all the better. Beautiful and personal - congratulations to all 3 of you.

Thanks from Oz!

Yes &mdash 06/27/08 - 05:29:42 AM
Yes Neil. You hit the nail on the head. I understand that you have the experience of playing in a band, and I can also sense that you're longing for one again, am I right?

I really wish you'd get one. Your have so many superb songs now. I imagine being able to hear your songs live ... outdoors ... by the beach .. in the Australian night .. wow ..

GREAT! &mdash 06/27/08 - 02:31:02 AM
Amazing work, I could listen to this piece all the day. Some Blackmore-ish acoustical Irish sounds going on along with the guitars and the fiddle. Just amazing!

Take Care

Beautiful &mdash 06/28/08 - 04:08:46 PM
It's beautiful. A 3-way improv with amazing moments; I feel like you guys did a fine job all the way through, but it seemed to move into a particularly sublime place for the last two. Must be a blast to play with such fine musicians!

Great love than this hath no man... &mdash 06/28/08 - 07:13:47 PM
...that he will set aside seventeen straight minutes of his precious weekend to listen to his friend's improv...

This sounds great, Johannes...The playing is nice, the interplay is a lot of fun, and you continue to get a nice "air blend" with those Golden Age mics...

I really like the 'movements' after Auld Lang Syne to the end the best, but there is no part of this that I DON'T enjoy... it's all relative to a very high level of goodness...

Of course, I have had to buy a new iPod Shuffle just for this, but it's worth it...

Always good to hear new things from you, my friend,

Ed

We are all folk musicians &mdash 06/28/08 - 09:13:28 PM
because we're folk and we're musicians. Right?

A very enjoyable jam.

pretty amazing &mdash 06/29/08 - 04:26:41 PM
that was a fast 17 minutes as I really got immersed in this.

I had the headphones on and at the end when the voices came in, I nearly jumped out of my chair. I thought some one had entered the house. lol

while intensely listening, I suddenly turn my head back for I thought my son is calling me, but no one there, I thought it was a ghost for it 4.00am, but I later realize that its part of the song, one of your kid interrupting you! Very nice to me and thanks for sharing.
