Description:
The full title: Queen Crimson, or the conversation between the birth of Aphrodite and the Mother Ocean. This is what I sent around to people to inspire them to contribute. Fosod's great vocals blend perfectly with the real life whales (which I added after I heard his contributions), as does Gudkarma's flute (which I added after). IvanJS was in the hospital during the mix and couldn't play bass, but I used his original MouthinoffCollab vocal as a starting groove, even though it kind of got buried in the onslaught of sounds. Religious chanting (clips) forms the backdrop that morphs into vocal choruses by various people.

Artwork is an original by Tobin James Mueller, © 1999.

Lyrics:
It is meant to listen to in headphones, since there is so much going on! Turn it up as far as you can...

Bass: Twon.
Shakuhachti Flute: Gudkarma.

i take it back &mdash 10/23/04 - 10:53:07 AM
i was listening last night through my crappy headphones because everyone
else was asleep. you definately can't do justice to this song without hearing
through a decent set of speakers with wide stereo seperation. i'm really sorry
about that.

this falls into the realm of art....sound art...if u will....u
won't here this type of creative work on the radio thats for
sure...and a damn shame...i've given up on radio as a
source for adventurous music...nothing but formulaic
offerings....your music takes the listener on a trip to parts
unknown and elsewhere and frees the imagination to
color the view in so many possible ways....thanks for
ride!.......

Gliding &mdash 10/23/04 - 08:47:23 AM
Like gliding over a world alive with waves of births and
beliefs. Those guitar licks are pretty amazing, Suz. Love
fosods vocals and his duet with the whales! Makes my
imagination soar...

How I'd Love To.... &mdash 10/24/04 - 10:56:53 AM
eavesdrop on this conversation more often!

"Angel came down from heaven yesterday
She stayed with me just long enought to rescue me
And she told me a story yesterday
About the sweet love between the moon and the deep
blue sea"

Thanks for being my angel. This piece was heavenly. The
guitar tones and performance are stellar - can't type
anymore - must listen again NOW!

BRILLIANT! Wished I could've been a part of this, but I
really felt it didn't have a place for me... perhaps, next
time, heheh!

I love how THICK this song feels, so many textures
mingling together to create an awesome sound, hats off
to all! Especially, the work done by the Humpback
whales... they NEED a record deal! :P

Alan(a) Holdsworth &mdash 10/26/04 - 05:22:23 PM
Is that really you on the guitar? Ooooeeee! Got a bit of
EVH from the licks (isn't that the beginning to the solo
from "Beat it" in there...?) the overall feel was much more
King Crimson/UK (hence the Alan"a" Holdsworth
comment). Really nice tone on the lead guitar, full of guts.
How did you do it? (hot di Marzio's plus a Mesa Boogie..?)
Really loved this, you have got some of the best talent on
the site with you here and it shows.

Yep, loved it.

Alan(a) Holdsworth &mdash 10/27/04 - 09:50:26 AM
this whole project started as a king crimson homage, hence the title. i actually started with the feel from the Perfect Pair album, but a lot of that stuff got kind of buried in the waves of ideas i added over 2 months of epileptic layering. thanks for the comments. lots of retakes, tobin fixing guiar timing in various programs, and AUs helping with effects. i think the guitar was actually mixed into a draft mix 2-3 times on top of earlier mixes - as i added parts i would realize an earlier mix made the guitar too soft so i would re-mix it over the top, sometimes using different effects. as messy as the end product sounds, and as lively.

So much sound! &mdash 10/26/04 - 05:59:44 PM
There's so much going on, it's like a great meal. All the
different flavors coming and going. The rhythm reminds
me of Micky Hart's Planet Drum album, until the guitar
starts wailing. Great stuff!

trippy dream or dreamy trip? &mdash 10/27/04 - 03:28:38 PM
The song has just ended, and I suddenly woke up and fell
out of bed.

Was it a dream or was I tripping?

Very artfully conceived and executed track. You did
indeed have "so much going on" but somehow it all pulled
together into an intricate, multi-layered whole.

I liked your guitar playing very much.

I kept trying to listen for the Shakuhachti flute but
couldn't quite make it out.....

.....which means I need to listen to this song a few more
times!

Wonderfully creative -- thanks for sharing this.

trippy dream or dreamy trip? &mdash 10/28/04 - 08:56:11 PM
the flute is doing the intial impression of a whale. it is what starts the whole thing, this first sound you hear. i morphed it into real whale sounds but they're kind of buried under that first groove and then the other layers. but the whales resurface in the end, this time with no flute, but a lot of fosod!

I really like this, sometimes songs with this amount of
density tend to lose direction, important aspects get lost
in the maelstrom so to speak. This works really well
though because every bit serves a purpose. Very
atmospheric.

Nice one.

Over the ocean you fly like a demon lover, skipping like a hot rock just above the sirens of water, sizzling with goddess nakedness, dripping the coolest licks in sight. Motion, never let me down. Constant, so sad it has to end. You can fly me to your place of birth any time!

First let me apologize for coming across this wonderfully rockin, funkin', masterfully mixed tune sooner. Where the heck have I been?! Actually, it's tough to keep up with MacJams.com. I came across your tune via Blaine Transue's VIRTUAL GARAGE listings. Thanks for sharing. Bravo to all the collaborators and to Blaine and VIRTUAL GARAGE.

Smokin' git-chops too, to say the least.:)

no direction? &mdash 05/03/05 - 04:01:16 PM
I'm sorry, I absolutely like progrock, but I can't see any
direction in this. It's noodling from start to end. Not that
there are no good parts in it, on the contrary, but it isn't
linked together. Progrock definitely means "more-
dimensional" to me: parts that come back in a different
setting with different harmonies very well linked together
or parts that are very diverse linked together in
imaginative and inventive ways. This is one-dimension.
On the other hand, I like the guitars and the bass a lot!
And some of the noises.
Guess I'm looking for the storyline, even if it's avant-
garde there has to be a reason and it has to be a
convincing one ...

excellent guitar &mdash 01/26/07 - 08:04:48 PM
now this is great! I don't know a lot King Crimson songs but I'm fascinated by the old YES and GENESIS songs, like "Close to the edge" or "Lamb lies down on Broadway". As far as I now King Crimson is not that far away from those other two bands.
When I heard the solo guitar the first idea I had was "sounds like Brian May". Then I read the posting comparing your guitar sound with Eddie van Halen. K, let's say Eddie plays Brian's guitar?
Just kidding. Everything's excellent work. From instrumentation, compiling to production. Great sound.
This song suits my Sennheiser headphones well ;-))
