Description:
Tokai posted Blackwater a while back. I added some keys and now, we were both hoping we could entice a vocalist to work with us. Consider it very much a work in progress, open to re arranging.

Maurice, I'd ditto that assessment. Jazz, rock, blending. Always a pleasure to see your supportive comments

Steve, you'll have to "shoot" me a new avatar! I probably changed mine 5-6 times in 24 hours. :-) Hope you are enjoying the beach's and nightlife of Spain. Thanks for letting me add to your already great comp!

Different class &mdash 07/02/08 - 05:31:29 AM
I've only just discovered the work of Tokai, and am very impressed. This is superb stuff. I would offer to lend a vocal, but not sure whether I am the sort of singer that would help this tune. Might be interesting though. Anyway, love wht you're doing here.

Phil, I think you'd sound great. Have a go. I just visited your page, and am ashamed I didn't visit sooner. You write brilliantly. Great songcraft. Thx for checkin this out.

slimmie, makes my day you dig it. Steve is a phenomenal musician and another member of the Mj UK contingent. You guys from across the pond rock. Hear any vocals for this?

the other one - are they both the same?
Anyway, very creative keys on an already great track from Steve. Yes this one is a better mix than the last.
Cheers

Len, at first I was confused how I got two postings, but now that I think about it, I think the first was indeed different and I thought I had cancelled it in time. Anyway, I'm grateful that you took the time to listen to the 2nd one, which brings down that synthy thing in the mix and boosts the piano. Steve is indeed the man. Check out his photography as well

steve west photography Outstanding stuff

Cool! &mdash 07/02/08 - 09:03:38 AM
Very cool collab and it's screaming for a vocalist... Can't wait for the upcoming full version, really fine work here.

signature &mdash 07/02/08 - 10:39:11 AM
There is indeed a signature stamp with your name on it in here John. The sound and the rhythm patters you use are something I now recognize as you. Very distinct way of leaning on those keys:) Cool!

The guitar work from Blackwater is steamy hot!

As you say, would be great to have a vocalist singing in this tune as well.

well Thor, if you heard a melody in there, it would be super cool to trade files. Certainly appreciate you checkin it out.

well in truth...... &mdash 07/02/08 - 09:23:36 PM
......... I really got into the music that I'm not even missing a vocalist here.

But, with that said it would be interesting to hear what the right voice could do.

vocals &mdash 07/03/08 - 03:09:39 PM
Vic, thanks for the thumbs up, I think its a fun jam, and Tokai's original version stands so much prouder on its own, but I think it might be fun to see where it would go as well, if someone picks up on it. Maybe add a couple more solos if not.

Like those changes &mdash 07/03/08 - 12:29:29 AM
My only critique is that it seems the volume levels are different between the change at the :50 mark. Other than that this is a very solid jam.

[ Reply to This ]
changes &mdash 07/03/08 - 03:13:03 PM
Mitchell, I think the volume drop is probably the change over into the synth solo where the heavy guitar drops out. When (and if :-) we can con a vocalist to tackle this, I'll definitely work to smooth that out some. Thanks for stoppin by

A cool thing... &mdash 07/04/08 - 01:06:23 PM
...about MacJams is that there are artists here that, when I see their names pop up, I know what I'm gonna get, and that I'll like it...

But then there's you. I NEVER know what it'll be, not even genre, but it always ends up in interesting territory...

I really like this, John (and Tokai)... It plays just great, and rocks, as is, but I can certainly hear that it could take to vocals...

Great keyboard and synth, great bass and drum lock with some solid funk, and then terrific guitar work over the top...

a pleasure reading your thoughtful comments Ed. You've hit upon my favorite aspect of this community in that there is lots of friendly, open minded musicians who share their ideas. Allowing someone like me, to riff on that and go places I wouldn't ordinarily try on my own.

Transubstantiation &mdash 07/05/08 - 10:30:35 AM
Yep, you took Steve's rockin' Blackwater and changed it into jazz fusion Black wine. The keys you added fit comfortably and unobtrusively into the arrangement, but give it an entirely different feel, especially the solo..

Nicely done, Jon. ;)

Andreas, coming from you I take it as a wonderful compliment. I find it easy to riff on Steve's (Tokai's) postings. I find them all deeply rich in texture and space.

A big smile .. &mdash 07/08/08 - 07:11:33 AM
.. on my face down here! Lots happening instrumentally, and I'm really enjoying it from that point of view. Not much space for a vocalist in there, but I'm always astounded at what MJers can pull out of their hats sometimes!

Great work guys - must check out Tokai.

Cheers,
Neil

down there &mdash 07/08/08 - 09:40:43 PM
Neil, well that puts a smile on my face here :-). I agree its crowded, but we're open to ideas about opening it up. There's a couple of sections I think we could tone down to fit in a vocal. I especially think that chorus section begs someone to pen a lyric or two.

Just plain ol' good music. nice groove. I don't think this needs vocals. unless you could find a rapper....

on its own &mdash 07/10/08 - 08:10:18 AM
Brian, thanks for the encouragement. I too thought a rap might work, but I've recently learned that anything much beyond 80-90 bpm is difficult to rap too !! Still we're hopin some can hear a vocal in there.

[ Reply to This ]
well... &mdash 07/10/08 - 06:49:56 PM
then maybe a beatnik poet with a sense of timing and space. Have you ever heard Saul Williams? That's what I'm thinking would be cool over this track.

[ Reply to This ]
i can hear vocals, &mdash 07/09/08 - 03:06:16 PM
but not quite sure how much. this one stands one its own as an instrumental, but i could hear some bits and pieces, do you have lyrics, or time signatures where vocals could be placed? shoot me a note...let me know style, intensity, and things like that...

I love the piano driving the track along, and the percussion is excellent. Lovely guitar work too, rocking and funky at the same time! Can't wait to hear it with a vocal. Nicely done. Peace.

It may have........ &mdash 07/17/08 - 07:48:39 PM
A rock guitar in it, but to my ears it's more of a fusion of the two.....
Maybe that's why you, refer to it as Tokai....... huuuum
Very nicely done, well put together, lots of style.......
Not a good key for me, though........
Never the less......

I.........LIKE IT...........

Great basic material &mdash 07/19/08 - 07:43:20 AM
Ok, you indicate that this is a backing track. But it's a really good one. The opening really grabs you, which is the way I think it should be for pop/rock songs. And then at 0:10 is where the vocal should come in.....

I hope you find someone who is inspired by this track. Should be no problem.

[ Reply to This ]
no problem &mdash 07/19/08 - 09:45:02 PM
Vic, it may be that the changes and crowded mix may be a detriment to trying to fit in vocals. Sure would make us happy if someone took up the cause tho. Thanks for lending an ear and commenting

This is awesome! I love the energy, and then when we get to the synth solo, the feel becomes very cool, which is a nice contrast, and then the high-energy guitar comes back. Really nice work here by both of you.

Ross, I attribute the raw energy to Steve's guitar playing. He did the backing tracks as well. Thx for stopping by and giving it a listen

hey John &mdash 08/11/08 - 05:02:32 PM
trying to catch up a little with favorite MJ'rs... this number is one is one of the reasons your on the top of that list... it's got that signature KTB percussive keyboard soul.. I love this kind of playing... leaving spaces here and there, aural beauty, sonic stabs, and knitting fast to the rhythm section...
