Description:
Here's a track from my new CD, "Jazz Meets Classical." It's on the iTunes Store and also CD Baby. See my artist page for the links.
This is a live recording of the John Stebbe Trio, playing in the lobby of the Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis, as a prelude to a concert by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. The tune is from Mozart's Sonata #1. The arrangement is my own. Jonathan Evans on bass, and David Mills on drums. They both did a fine job. The piano was a five-foot (maybe six-foot?) Yamaha grand. Audio was captured with my portable MiniDisk recorder. I did some editing and EQ-ing after the fact in GarageBand. Mics were OtterBox.
I posted an earlier "studio" version of this arrangement three years ago here on MJ, but I like this recording a lot better.

Love your Jazzical stuff &mdash 07/03/08 - 02:07:17 PM
And this one is really fun... I remember the studio version, and this does have a bit more life. The minidisc recorder did very nicely, although a bit more bass boost would be good, nice stereo separation! Jonathan did great on bass, and David sounded super on drums. But you were flying... great performance... too bad the audience was distracted, you deserved more applause! :-)

Mozart, indeed! &mdash 07/03/08 - 05:07:28 PM
John,
You are THE MASTER at this kind of arrangement. Just absolutely beautiful, fluid playing throughout and with enough Mozart to keep it all in the ballpark. The Eine Kleine Nachtmusik lick was such a tricky little lick. Just great. And I totally enjoyed the live recording with the ambient background, though YOU should have on stage!!! You will be soon if you keep this up. I'll be getting your CD from cdbaby. Nice. Nice. Nice.
Peace.

Thanks &mdash 07/03/08 - 06:50:22 PM
Thanks to all of you for your kind words. And thank you, Paul, for buying my CD! That makes my day.
I do enjoy playing this number with the trio. Makes a good showpiece for the drummer, almost as much as the piano player. [ Reply to This ]
You amaze me &mdash 07/04/08 - 09:11:29 AM
Your ability to play these amazing jazzy things with such ease is astounding. Mozart would be intrigued and impressed if he could hear this. He'd say "Why didn't *I* think of this??" Just wonderful....:-) [ Reply to This ]

Nice way... &mdash 07/07/08 - 05:33:09 AM
...to start my day...
My next door neighbor's been playing this piece (the "straight" version) for the past 11 years. Never could get those runs quite right. Then her daughter, who'd been playing violin since she was 6, put the fiddle on the shelf, picked up on piano, and had it down within a few months, much to my delight.
Sweet tune, John...I've been enjoying the cd... [ Reply to This ]
You &mdash 07/07/08 - 06:56:02 AM
said it- music is fun.A lot of jazz musicians try to be "heavy" all the time which can be very boring.I like your approach, kind of like Desmond-Brubeck (Blue Rondo a la Turk). If more people played like this maybe jazz would be more popular! Nice arrangement and solos. [ Reply to This ]
Where's the Wine & Cheese? &mdash 07/07/08 - 03:25:23 PM
Really nice job on this, John. And a great live recording.
Excellently performed jazz transmutation of Mr. Mozart's music. I'm sure he would have enjoyed hearing it as much as I did. ;)

Love your live postings I think I've heard this one before but it doesn't stop me from listening again :D What a great interpretation of a mozart tune. Your playing always reminds me of how I should've taken up piano as a kid and practiced... Oh well there's always my son he he he

Great work John &mdash 07/07/08 - 06:46:27 PM
I've never heard Mozart done in Jazz before, or any other Classical composers work for that matter. I'll say this, the recording is very well done and has the kind of balance in it that makes it sound like a studio recording.
Now for the rest of it. The arrangement is very well crafted and sounds wonderful. It's easy to tell that all the players on this are very accomplished musicians, as the playing is excellent.
Beautiful job John, Bravo to you and your mates for a very fine session. Excellent work.
