I like choosing sound that are rich and have depth. Some sounds where hard to find specially since I use soundfonts for the most part. [ Reply to This ]

I am glad you liked the video as well as the music. I wanted to create a more slow-like feel of a voyage through the vast and amazing universe. [ Reply to This ]
Star chart needed &mdash 07/15/08 - 03:35:29 PM
Edgar, thanks for asking me to listen in. My first impression is that its kind of a background ambient piece with very nice 3-dimensionality. The MIDI voice, which sounded like a synth trumpet when it started, is kind of cartoonish, mechanical, perhaps not the Star Trek vocalese thing you were looking for. Consider replacing it with real vocals, or a smooth FX synth that migrates thru the space, something without an attack so you can smoothly move from note to note.
The piece meanders too much for me. The echo-reverb percussion is cool, all the backing spacial sounds work well. But the melodic vox annoyed me whenever it entered, not of the same quality as the rest.
It ends without traveling anywhere, perhaps too abruptly. Consider deleting the fake vox and using another sound entirely, something that might inspire you to either create a soaring haunting melody or at least a real personality of a sound that can guide the listener thru your very nicely shaped atmosphere.
Or, avoid all sense of melody and stick with an ambient atmospheric space. Just add cloud dust and wind and light, if that makes sense. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you very much &mdash 07/15/08 - 05:22:42 PM
I'm going to find another sound to the vocals or perhaps try finding someone to add them, or if that does not work, I'll stick to the ambient background. I had put to much pressure on myself on finish this music and I do agree it ends to abruptly.
All your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Voyage &mdash 07/16/08 - 09:57:45 AM
Hey edpdx! Glad to come over and take a listen. This is a great ambient, space tune - especially for one of your first creations! You did a great job choosing sounds for this and placing them in strategic spots for great effect. The panning and layering is really very good - again, especially for someone just starting out.
I have to agree with Tobin. I'm not a fan of that synth voice sound. I think it really distracted me from the rest of what was going on - and I don't think that was your intention. Take a listen to some vocalists here on MacJams - check out the Ambient and New Age categories to maybe find someone's sound that you like and send them a note. Real, haunting vox would sound great in this!
The reverb you used on your atomospheric sounds is really good. The perfect amount to give it that spacey sound, but not overwhelming or muddy.
I've listened 3 times now and I like it more each time. The only real suggestion I can give are doing some research on those vox and drawing out the ending a bit more. It ends a bit abruptly. You bring in those great string sounds and then the alarm goes off and then it just kind of all cuts out. Maybe start subtracting layers, moving the sounds farther away as if they were floating off into the deep unknowns of space. Something more gradual, since the rest of the piece doesn't move that quickly or abruptly.
Good work on this! And welcome to MacJams! [ Reply to This ]
Thank you! &mdash 07/16/08 - 10:29:48 AM
Last night I took off the synth voice all together from the mix and it sounds really good, I am going to try to build without it, if I cannot find a suitable voice. I learned a lesson to not rush your music, just to get it done and post it.
Thank for your time and feedback.
I am grateful for being part of MJ!

2001 &mdash 07/19/08 - 11:12:29 PM
This reminds me of Moby's expanded version of Hotel with the ambient tracks on it. That and it has a 2001: A Space Odyssey sound to it. Nice work here. Very experimental and enjoyable :D [ Reply to This ]

I had to hear hotel by Moby, witch I had never heard before. It is pretty awesome! Thank you for your cool comments.

Nice &mdash 07/21/08 - 12:26:49 PM
and relaxing. It does sound though that (from the music) that there is a hint of sadness at the end of the journey. Cool track [ Reply to This ]
Choices &mdash 07/23/08 - 09:38:57 AM
I listened to the 3 versions .
What a good evolution from the first version .
There are many good ideas here . I like this piece .
I see you put this piece in 3 genres that are slightly differents .
When it comes to "experimental" I have only one thing to say
: "no hesitation" .
Any choosen sound , effect , construction/deconstruction have to be affirmed.
Maybe you have to choose if it's new age ,ambient, or experimental and stick to one genre to make this even more strong . [ Reply to This ]
Choosing &mdash 07/23/08 - 03:07:48 PM
You are right! I should stick to one category. I think new age fits best.

new age? &mdash 08/01/08 - 12:56:21 PM
Thanks for asking me to review this piece.
I agree with the others that a better choice of vox sound might be made; this one has a closed, contracted sort of quality, a mono voice in the middle of more expansive sounds. Perhaps more reverb on this particular sound would help make a better balance with the rest of the mix.
The pacing of each new sound is rather fast, which creates a certain urgency. I would like to hear each section of sound combinations a bit more drawn-out.
To me, music in the "new age" genre is more tuneful, like Liz Story or Paul Halley on piano, or any of the Windham Hill artists, or harpist Andreas Vollenweider. For lack of a better term, new age music is sort of like "muzak"; easy on the ears, often like background music, or meditative.
This piece sounds more ambient or experimental to my ears. It almost seems like a movie soundtrack, when the music is "episodic", creating a certain atmosphere, flowing from one idea to another.
What kind of effect or mood did you want to create in this piece? If you want the listener to be stimulated, you might quicken the pace. For relaxation, the opposite; draw things out more.
I will be interested to hear your future work.

I appreciate you taking the time to review my song. I wanted to create a feeling of a spaceship traveling through the galaxies and stars. I will take a break with this piece and eventually work out flaws.
