Description:
Here's an updated arrangement of a song I've posted a couple times before. This is a celebration of the new piano that we got given recently. Lovely instrument. All the instrumentation is acoustic and real. No loops. If they were loops, they'd probably sound better!
Lyrics:
would you fall away with meto some better place
to a place that's caught
holding heaven in between
And I would take you there
Maybe stumbling through the door
And I would take you here
If only you'd rise off the floor
Like an autumn leaf
Blown across the street
I might float away
On the winds of change

Thanks Feter. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I agree there is much room for improvement, particularly in the recording and mixing of the instruments. I'm pleased with the overall arrangement though. I feel like it's a more authentic treatment then the previous alt-rock vibe that I had with the first post. If anyone wants to weigh in on the apples to oranges thing, comparing the previous version to this one (still posted), I'd love any feedback on that.

I didn't hear the original arrangement, but this is really gorgeous. I love your vocals here - what a terrific voice you have! Lovely piano, the whole production is wonderful - congrats!

Thanks Magnatone!
This take is really quite different from the former. I'm glad this arrangement caught your ear. Thanks for listening and commenting!

Hey Hammhock this is excellent, a really great song performed to such a high standard. The instruments all really work well together
Really this is one of the best things I've heard on MJ yet
Cheers

Thanks for the comments. It was a bit of an experiment for me to work out some actual parts for the instrumental arrangement. I feel like there's a ton more for me to learn about that element of music, but it's encouraging to hear that you liked this go around. Thanks again!

This is a great version of %u2018Fall Away with Me%u2019! Very moving %u2013 it definitely cuts deeper than the hyper-reality of the original. Where the original, perhaps, had more impetus %u2013 through drive and repetition/echo %u2013 for getting someone to stop and listen, in a world of mostly static and noise; this track, by assuming someone has come to hear, truly shakes the soul in its intimate instrumentation and breathing pace. This is an excellent acoustic rendition of a great song. In particular I really like the violin and piano. Is that you on the violin???
Kris - great singing %u2013 great song %u2013 great crafting!

Gorgeous vocals, man. Nice on that new piano! beautiful strings. Very nice song - the only nitpick I have is that the shaker got a little old in my ear after a bit. This is a great tune - thanks for sharing it!

Q - for quality. Be lucky.

Obviously this is exceptionally lovely - hope you don't mind if I give you some constructive feedback - entirely IMHO of course.
Firstly, I'm listening on headphones; as you probably know a track will sound very different on different set-ups.
The only two things I would change are the treatment of the vocal (not the performance itself which was outstanding) and the shaker.
Re the vocal - for me I'd prefer to have a purer recording of your voice. It's so delicate and so pure itself (great control in the higher register) I'd like to hear it slightly clearer and more natural. (To me the recording sounds a bit muddy). Maybe it's the mike or the room you're singing in - or maybe *you* prefer it like that :-)
The shaker seemed intrusive in the 'phones - maybe it's not so through speakers; but personally I'd take them down a bit.
All the live performances were great - and the levels of the other instruments seemed spot on. I prefer the 'real' sound to 'loops' :-)
Anyhow - really lovely as it is - thanks for posting it.

...they would not sound better, imo. sure sometimes you can accidentally get some extra 'character' micing everything yourself, but the cohesiveness and uniqueness of the feel just can't be achieved with someone else's work. (i don't use loops either. mainly because i use cubase most of the time.)
amazing sounding piano. sounds like an upright. it has a fabulous woody/boxy tone. sits well in the mix. great work on the guitar too. and what a deep sounding bass drum! nice job. fav'd!

delicate like a flower, angelfood cake in its lightness. i sort of like the watery vocal. the break is so richly meloncholy. this is my first song of yours that i have heard . i will remember to come back

Wow, I love your vocal. Playing is also really good - if there are any weaknesses they are probably in production. The bass/kickdrum is so deep on my phones - a second track of it with some more mids and treble would fill it out nicely. This is really a lovely song. It would be great to hear this well recorded (removing the hiss for starters).
I'm glad I heard this, and look forward to hearing more of your stuff Kris.
Cheers from Oz,

a lovely piece of music. I love the "And i would take you there" part - really catchy. I love the intimacy and rawness of it, especially that vocal and piano (I actually prefer that wooden tone you get from uprights to alot of the grand piano sounds)
The only thing i could possibly question would be the use of the shaker.
Nevertheless, a really moving piece.
fav'd!
thanks

Your vocal feel here is wonderful. The breathy verses and high end chorus reminds me of the late great Jeff Buckley. I really great feel. Nice Job.
Love your lyrics.. your piano & clean sounds make it feel more passionate...
Enjoyed it.. and made me feel more relaxed...

This is a beautiful song. I love your arrangement. All instruments (including shaker) are well placed. Your vocals are great just the way they are...
But,
I think the piano is a bit distorted on my speakers. I think the bias is too high. It blows away the acoustic.
A bit of tweaking of the bias for the acoustic and piano would turn this into an exceptional song. Actually it is an exceptional song but I think the gain fixes would make the production better.
Of course I am only a GB hack and know nothing about mastering - I'm just going with my pedestrian view.
Overall, very very good.
Thanks for sharing and allowing me to download!

Nice track. Could probably do with some slight L/R panning just to bring the sounds out and separate.
Vocals were spot on. Really enjoyed listening.
Thanks
This is really my favorite genre of music and I think this song really is well done. I like the feeling in the vocals and the phrasing. This is more of a matter of taste but it would be interesting to change the arrangement a bit to be more Radiohead-ish with a more pronounced drum and base track.
