Description:
This one is about being honest with yourself and was written when I needed to take stock and change some things in my life.
Lyrics:
The Only One copyright 1997 Oldman recordsEvery once in a while you have to look into the mirror
and wonder if you like who's staring back
Now is a good a time as any to take your stock
are you truly comfortable with who you are
Chorus
Your reflection won't console you unless your heart is pure
go ahead and lie to yourself and do what you want to do
If you can't be true to yourself you'll never know who is who
and darlin you're the only one who know's for sure
and darlin you're the only one who knows for sure
You have to teach yourself anything worth knowin
There ain't no one out there you're gonna learn it from
Life can always be better than before
ya we never really give up wanting more
Chorus
solo
Chorus
Colorful metaphors and clever anecdotes
might get you what you want for now
but if you hiding behind some kind of facade
darlin there aint no one out gonna know who you are
Chorus
Life can always be better than before
ya we never really give up wanting more.

guygrooves
Thank you very much. I am humbled by your kind words. This is another I tried to remix and it worked out much better than the last. Thanks to some suggestions I received by a sage at this site who knows who he is.
...Put me in touch with the blighter! I need all the help I can get! Ha ha...
Great job remixing those old files Guy. It's trickier than working with fresh ones.
Kudos!

songs of yours my friend ...Hats of to you !!!!!!!!
guygrooves
Thank you my friend I appreciate all the kind words. I will have to fess up to using melodyne plugin on the harmony line and a touch on the lead but it was only because I am to lazy to re record the lead and to crappy at singing harmony. I am still happy you liked it even if I did cheat a little lol.
TEXASFEEL
Nice melody laid on a bed of guitars. Full sound, fine progression all around.
guygrooves
Nice of you to stop by for a listen. Thank you for the kind words. I enjoy your work very much.
Moviz

guygrooves
for the visit and kind words sir I enjoyed your entry as well.

Good song, well sung - perfect harmonies. Yep, this is really good - original sounding, but fitting in GOOC style. In the nit department, I'd like to hear some bass, and maybe a little more variation in the drum track (there's a closing hihat that appears all through the verses every 2 bars). A minor nit for sure, but a definite way of making the whole thing sound a little more like a real drummer is in there.
"California metaphors" - great phrase.
Nice ending too.
Excellent post Guy!

I'm posting as jiguma and somehow it came up as a GOOC comment - not sure how that happened.

I know what your sayin about the bass and drums. This song was done about 2 years ago and I had no idea how to work the rhythm machine in my zoom or the bass machine for that matter. I used my Roland GW7 workstation I forgot to mention under hardware. The bass and drums were married so to speak and I wasn't sure if I wanted to record a bass line or put some drums on it, as I've said before I'm lazy lol. Thank you for your kind words and the visit.
J.A.Stewart
a very nice Country-crossover tune.
Very smooth. Nicely done. ;)

Nice to meet you.

Probably the best one so far at the GOO challenge my friend. You voice works so well on this, and you've got some great lyrics to sing too. The back tracks are perfect for it and so is your mix.
Outstanding work Guy, I salute you for an absolutely fantastic job. Kudos and Bravo to you Guy.

Coming from someone as talented as you this is high praise indeed. I can't take all the credit for the vocals my new toy melodyne is responsible for the harmony line, although I only had to tweak a half dozen notes or so on the lead vocal. I love toys. Thanks for the visit and the kind words.
perfect sound and outstanding songwriting!
guygrooves
I am flattered. It's a sign of a great artist that listens to all genres and you sir a re a great artist. Thanks for the listen.

for your support visits and nice words.

very nice tune Guy. solid writing and composition.
True words, sometimes you have to stop and take a good look at yourself and wonder would I hang out with that person? just one of those things that makes a person wiser as time goes on.
guygrooves
Vic am am happy you liked the song. Thanks for the listen and kind words.

This is a great song. I love the lyrics, and you have some wonderful turns of phrase in there. A great sentiment - thought-provoking and perceptive. Your vocal performance is great. Your voice carries the weight of experience, and you bring great style and a laidback warmth to the song. Very cool. Kudos, my friend. Peace.
guygrooves
Dajama you are way too kind and very well spoken. I am happy you enjoyed it.

Musically, I find this to be pleasing to the ear, 'though it sounds very dated ... I realize it was recorded in the late 90's, but it sounds like something from a LOBO album from the ... what? early 70's?
My real challenge with this song is in the lyrics. First, IMO, the song comes across as "preachy" - that is, the singer comes off as standing on a soapbox and preaching to the person he is speaking to. It's always a challenge to get a message of morality across in a song without sounder "holier than thou" and I'm not sure this one rises to that challenge.
Structurally, I thought the lyrics were a bit off as well. You have first halves of lines that are sometimes very crowded followed by second halves that have tons of space ("now's as good a time as any" ... "to take stock"). Also, I thought the line "colorful metaphors and clever anecdotes" just doesn't work well in a song. Don't get me wrong, I like what's behind it, but it simply doesn't sing all that well or fall on the ear pleasantly. It's not very ... well ... lyrical.
The arrangement is very nice, the vocals are quite good, and the message itself is both interesting and heartfelt, I believe. In my opinion, it doesn't quite work within the context of a song that one would care to listen to more than once, for the reasons I've offered above.
One man's opinion ... please feel free to disregard!
guygrooves
I appreciate and admire most anyone who speaks their mind. I understand what you are saying. I wasn't sure if I was gonna post it or not for some of those very reasons (preachy), but being the closest thing i have to actual country and western I thought what the hell. I really do appreciate all the constructive criticism sngwrtr, and your welcome to stop by and voice your opinion always. After all it's the surest way to improve. Thanks for the listen.

I'm always happy to come across country music on this site. There's not enough of it, and what I've heard from you always sounds professional. Good song writing, and technically sound. Nothing flashy about the guitar parts, but solid support for your (excellent) vocal delivery.
If I had to find one fault with this song, I'd say that your rhythm guitar sounds a bit too full, not leaving much space for the bass or the drums. Most of the time I only hear the kick drum and the tambourine.
guygrooves
I appreciate the helpful comment. This was very early in my digital recording experience. I revisited it to enter it in the GOOC and it came out pretty well from the production side, although there were several mistakes made on the original recording I tried to fix, the drums and bass being one. I used my roland GW7 and the drums and bass are one track I will never do this again lol. I hadn't noticed what you said about the rhythm guitar thank you for that one. I am hoping your comment is a result of Neil's thread which is why I joined this site in the first place even with all the sunshine I have learned so much. I hope it shows as I post more. Thanks again for the listen and useful comments.
Much about country music, I know good lyrics
and performance.....
And this is good on both counts very intuitive
personally enlightening as well.....
I...........LIKE IT.........
guygrooves
for the visit and listen. I don't know much about country music myself lol. I do know that in my tiny little mind there are only two kinds of music. Good and bad ;o) and you have some pretty good tunes yourself sir. Take care.
BossHook
a great retro Country recording production. A real cool Nashville sheen to it.
guygrooves
Very kind words from a very talented artist. Thanks for the listen.

Great song cous.Hope this site gets you to where you should be in the music business. Love you Wendy
guygrooves
Hey cous so glad you stopped by, and joined up. You'll find some really cool free music here, just look through some of my favorite MacJammers and you find some music sure to strike a chord with you. All I wanna do is get a song into the right artists hands and then who knows lol. I might have a better shot at the lottery though lol. Thanks again for the listen and fav.
Elevator_Funk
here's my take. This is well made and better produced than anything I could do, so take it as you will.
This song screams collaborations, because no-one is good at everything. If you could talk some-one to plug-in some country bends and pedal-steel licks into this song over the lead guitar, it would be a totally different song, it would switch it from eagles rock to dwight yokam.
Also, I think the tempo of the song is too fast for the song. the lyrics ask for a slower tempo, like neil young slower if you know what I mean.
Thats all meant to be constructive criticism. It's a new thing I'm trying out. Thanks for posting.
egobandit
Write something like this thats why I like it so much..Don't know why but it reminds me of the Eagles. Excellent!
guygrooves
That could be the nicest thing anyone has said about this song. thanks for the listen and visit.
Robert Rayner
Superb vocals and lyrics. Read that you cheated with the harmonies, why not, technology is there, use it. Very impressive.
(where can I get one)?
Reminded me of mixture of Kenny Rogers and Glenn Campbell.
Loved it
guygrooves
to say.. thank you for the kind words and the listen. Melodyne is what I used and it's expensive lol but worth it if you're lazy like me lol. Thanks again.
woofer3
Love your vocals as usual with that Ian Anderson tinge, also loved the harmonies.
Very nice overall production.
John.

I really am pleased you like this one. I always thought it was a bit on the preachy side, but to each his own I guess.
