Description:
An older song, lyrics written ages ago by my son Gray Bouchard. I'd posted this before, but removed it a while back. The old version popped up on my iPod last week and was so badly mixed that it inspired me to rework it and this is a pretty well re-tooled version, with a more open sound. I had a couple other guitar tracks, and a different drum arrangement. I re-recorded the bass part and lead vocal and added the strings and a few more ambient samples from zoos and such. And an especially crackly Automat part. It's probably just at crowded as the last version, but in a different way. This isn't perfect, but I need to move onto something else and would welcome some input about where it's at right now.

Lyrics:
Good morning world…Welcome to the parade!
I think you’d all agree it’s been a crazy day
I won’t deny we’re all a little shakey
When it comes down to dealing with the big boom
So I hold onto my hope and my humor
and now I’m goin’ to the zoo

Good morning world…Welcome to the parade!
There’s a pretty girl, shining like the sun today.
It’s all bravura nothing more than a charade
But that’s nothing to go into lightly
So it’s never what it seems to be up front
Don’t you worry, I’m goin’ to the zoo
Life’s constant tick tock just doesn’t stop
And I find myself in the big top… Center Ring

The monkey appears in a cameo…tapping the elixir of life
It’s a crying shame babe, but everybody’s got something to hide
Me, I’m watching for my right hand man…Heard he’s coming soon…
Got a bubble made of platinum…Custom fitted for you
It’s slight different this time around
Still I’m going to the zoo
Life’s constant tick tock just doesn’t stop
And I find myself in the big top…Center Ring

Nice sound &mdash 07/11/08 - 07:02:03 AM
The drums and bass are very nice, setting a nice bed for the vocal, which is very well done. Your voice has a hint of world weariness, and it's a very expressive performance. Guitar sounds good, a little forward in the mix to my ears, but please note that I'm listening on crappy speakers right now! Nice song. Peace.

I might just get rid of the guitar. It was a holdover from the original mix and there are some nice parts but it probably is a little obtrusive. It's probably just a distraction, but I sometimes hold onto things for sentimental reasons. That's the hardest thing about remixes, for me.

good songwriting here. really like the progression. keep the guitar it's an interesting element I think is necessary in this. only thing i would suggest doing is back off a tad on the ambient samples as they are a bit distracting at times.

The old version... &mdash 07/11/08 - 07:21:30 PM
...popped up on my iPod the other day, and I remembered how much I liked it... Still reminds me of middle period Jefferson Airplane...

I like the way you play bass on this version... And I like the guitar tone you're getting...Neat solo after the third verse... I like the vocals on both versions...

Jim Bouchard mixes are hard to comment on, because I'm never sure what you're aiming for, or what makes a mix good to your ears. For me, the drums and some of the swirling sound effects are cool, but some others reoccur in such a way that they distract a little, like the dog bark and the sleigh bell...

Still, I really like this, and I'm downloading it,

Ed

I guess I got a little to enamored with the samples. Though I thought I'd had enough of this song, I'm remixing it again and taking the samples out really does open things up even more. There is a software string section which I made pretty low in the mix here so I tried to bring that up. Then I discovered that there are some odd bass guitar notes that are causing some weird artifacts in the mix, making the orchestra parts to jump out in spots. It sort of has to do with how the notes are played so if I swap those out with other notes it seems to fix that. I may just re-do the orchestra parts with other parts. It's turned into quite a puzzle, but thanks a lot for the input! I get so little input these days but then I don't participate to much these days because I'm sort of busy trying to just strum my guitar and then with my day job, that I guess I get what I deserve. At any rate, your listening and commenting is greatly appreciated. And this goes for everyone!

What's that sound? &mdash 07/15/08 - 07:39:03 AM
I like this. Sounds like you are letting it hang out and let the melody of both the vocals and instruments pour out subconsciously. Lyrics are out there and ponder-worthy.

The ambient noises are a neat touch but I found myself wondering where the sound of birds was coming from. Disconcerting considering I was wearing closed-back headphones at the time!
