Description:
i did a score for a short demo reel. the client asked for something russian sounding. here's what i came up with. (the crescendos are kinda lifeless without the accompanying picture, but you get the idea.)
Hardware:
korg k-49 keyboard, v-drumsSoftware:
cubase 4, halion1, many other vst instruments. You must be registered and logged-in to comment.

I must admit that this did generate images of being rapidly pursued through the city streets in my minds' eye.
Nicely done sir!
Be well!

i'm glad the piece managed to project that tension and, perhaps, anxiety of being chased. thanks for checking it out!

this was my first real midi composition (short as it is). i just came up with the three different themes, shuffled them around to match the picture, adjusted tempos. really, i'm quite amazed at how composing midi is so flexible and powerful (in cubase at least... never tried in garageband.) then, if it ever comes down to it, i can print out sheet music for an orchestra. (gosh, i sound like a salesman or something. :)
thanks for your comment about it sounding full. i have many vst instruments going on this one (particularly cubase's halion1 - great string sounds). i'm glad it came out sounding somewhat real.

great with exciting yet furtive feelings running through it; love the instruments and the arrangement. Excellent, regards M

thanks for the comment. yes, the client definitely wanted upbeat, but with a russian theme. i think the scale i'm using for some of the melodies/counter-melodies (i couldn't tell you what mode it is) is what adds a distinct colour and depth. thanks again for listening!
LaLa_Divina
I like the main theme that starts in the cellos. What instrument comes in there before the bells take over? It is a cool choice. Very pleasing and unexpected melody in that section.
12parsecs
the instrument before the bells is a dulcimer, but it didn't quite have enough high-end, so i blended in some harpsichord with it. and there's also some pizz strings too.
i, personally, like the oboe part. i remember in high school detesting the oboe and french horn... i love them now! thanks for listening!
ageofthedeathtree
tasty! great work again man...haven't been disappointed in anything you've done yet! keep them coming!

and what a classical piece you have here 12. Love the feel of it, it as drama and movement. Very well arranged and played.
Kudos to you for a job very well done my friend

thanks for the comment, ed! this is my first in-the-box classical comp. it was challenging and fun, and i'm glad it turned out half way decent. cheers!

I like this score. You might expand this for soundtrack music if you have a movie to score :) Very much enjoyed.
Thanks
Bill

hehe. thanks for the comment, bill! this could definitely be expanded upon. mind you, i had so much fun creating it, i might just want to start fresh (unless it's an obvious fit).
i really like the idea of scoring to picture, because one can get away with some pretty over the top dynamics. cheers!

Excitement builds nicely.
Breathless, I'd be interested in hearing what you might transition to at the end.
12parsecs
yeah, i could have gone on further, maybe introduce a new theme. but that's where their demo ended, so that's why it fades out where it does.
WOW!!!!
Brilliant LOOOVE this sooo much. Fantastic Job.
Peace Dee.
12parsecs
thanks, dee. this was my first serious try at the classical genre. i appreciate the comment. cheers!

I really like this - fantastic use of the instruments at your disposal and very nicely recorded. The slowed down ending is something few of us attempt despite having the technology - excellent Mr 12.

the tempo i chose lined up nicely with the animation for most of this demo reel, so i didn't want to change that, but the last scene ran a just a bit too long before the credits came up. so this slow down at the end worked with the drama of the very last image and also allowed me to 'put off' the credits music for a second or two.

The arrangement is superb, and the sounds are perfectly chosen and used to great effect. Nice dramatic use of percussion, and wonderfully evocative piece. The title says it all! Nicely done. Peace.
12parsecs
thank you very much for the comment. i listened to star wars and thomas newman for some inspiration. their secret? all the coolest stuff happens with the oboes and french horn. :)
Kori Arashi
Nice work here! It's very impressive and it does paint the image of a foot chase in the snow during the night : )
12parsecs
great image you've painted. my mental picture didn't include snow or night. (maybe overcast. :) actually, my mental picture is mostly the animation this is set to. thanks for the comment!

Many ideas , well built , and great sound .
You have a good sense of musical questions and answers melodies .
12parsecs
cool, thanks for the comment. and thanks for reminding me of that term 'question and answer'. i'm big fan, as you can tell, of the oboe and french horn answers. cheers!
rsorensen
really, really good man. definitely has that 'chase' vibe and the instruments sound pretty authentic. sounds like it could be in a Bourne movie set in Russia. I gotta say though it bugs me that there is no real 'ending'. I mean I know why you did it and it probably works with the visual, but if I know you, I'm sure it bugs you as well. Take a couple of hours and tag an ending on there instead of fading out. DO IT! Only then will your venture into this genre be complete.
12parsecs
thanks for listening, ridd. yeah, you're right... it wouldn't be tough to tag a real ending on to this one... maybe i'll revisit this... get it up around the 2~3 minute mark. first i got some others to finish up, tho. just thought i'd post this for the Eine Kleine Nachtmusik MJ fest.

see the Russian thing. funny, when the drums first came in it kind of reminded me of ABBA (a good thing surely). this is really nicely done. would love to hear a version with big echoey guitar over the top (ala Sigur Ros).
12parsecs
hehe. i totally didn't see that comment coming! but now that you mention it, you are totally right! what song though? mamma mia?
anyway, thanks for the comment. i don't know if i'd use this particular composition as a classical backdrop to a sigur ros esque tune... but i'm listening more and more to them (sigur ros) and am getting inspired to write something of that epic nature. one of these days.
