Description
The Kokako (Callaeas cinerea) is a forest bird which is endemic to New Zealand. It is slate-grey with a black mask and wattles. It is one of three New Zealand wattlebirds, the other two being the endangered Tieke (saddleback) and the extinct Huia. Previously widespread, the birds were decimated by the introduction of exotic predators such as possums, stoats, cats, rats and mice. There were two sub-species of Kokako, although one of these may now be extinct.

Toe-tapper...
hahahahaha ... very good. Great ambient piece. Usually, birds are used as background, as in some New Age type of music. Here, the piece is centered on the birds. Unique and effective. The music is indeed melancholy.

Damned rats.

slightly dark
and I think that serves the subject matter appropriately. The long metallic sustained pads are groovy to say the least. Like someone running their fingernail down a grand piano string. Nuanced harmonics and ever so slightly changing melodic directions. Well done.

Great bird sounds....
This is a great piece to relax to. Eyes closed and sat or laid back and thinking of nothing in particular.

Everything fits together pretty well.

Take care.

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment.

The birdsong here is the actual song of the Kokako. When I first heard various recordings of this, it was hard to believe that it was for real.

I've wanted to do a composition incorporating the Kokako's hauntingly beautiful song for a while now. Thanks to Bryn for taking the instrumental and the birdsong recording and working his magic on it.
(Thanks, B! :)

.
I never would have guessed that was a real bird! Two reasons: the recording seems so clean, and the overtones and filtering that the bird acheives seem so intricate (well beyond anything birdsong I've ever heard before). Wow.

thanks

Apt
There's something so perfect about the Magpies doing a "bird" song. :-)

I can understand what has you so enraptured by this bird, Cat. The musicality of its call is extraordinary. The two of you have imagined a haunting and beautiful environment for it, that truly transported me to a different place to listen to the Kokako. This will be such an enjoyable listen at bedtime on headphones, I can tell.

Thanks!

I was making a playlist for my newborn daughter when i found your music. It's amazingly beautiful and melencolic, it bought a tear to my eye knowing that these endangered NZ birds and their wonderful songs might not be heard by future generations. The huia is supposed to have had a captivating song but is now gone forever and was never recorded. Your music complements natures perfection. My daughter and I thankyou.
