Description
Well here we go again. Sooner or later I'm gonna get it right. Trouble was in the drums, I left them off the last version without realizing I'd done so.

So for you listening pleasure we now present for your approval the umteenth remix of A Simple Life.

I promise, never again. If it ain't right this time it's just too bad, it's gonna stay this way forever. ( Yeah sure Sloparts, we know about how that is)

Enjoy, or not as your ears can handle it. ;-)

A Simple Life

Verse 1
I was sittin' on my pony, at Hollywood and vine.
Tryin' to find a place to park, I didn't have a dime
My buckskins chafin' me, from ridin' down the line.
I guess I'm just a little behind the times

C h o r u s
It's just another one a life's little - disappointments.
When you just want to live a simple life
Yeah with three squares on the table, and a woman that is able.
And a good edge on your trusty huntin' knife

Verse 2
I tried to find a barber, for a haircut and a shave.
All I found were stylin' shops, and permanent waves
Its a sign of the times in the home of the brave.
No one wants to live a simple life

C h o r u s
It's just another one a life's little - disappointments.
When you just want to live a simple life
Yeah with three squares on the table, and a woman that is able.
And a good edge on your trusty huntin' knife

Verse 3
I went to by some ammunition, at a dry goods store.
And they told me that they can't get that caliber no more
Well tryin' to kill a buffalo without it is a chore.
He said " you can't kill buffalo no more

C h o r u s
It's just another one a life's little - disappointments.
When you just want to live a simple life
Yeah with three squares on the table, and a woman that is able.
And a good edge on your trusty huntin' knife

Pickin' Verse

Verse 4
I spied a pretty lady, with locks of golden hair.
It look like she had nothin on, but her underwear
When I yelled out " Hey cowgirl, come on over here."
Well all he did was look at me and stare

C h o r u s
It's just another one a life's little - disappointments.
When you just want to live a simple life
Yeah with three squares on the table, and a woman that is able.
And a good edge on your trusty huntin' knife

Tag line: ( sung twice)
Yeah with three squares on the table, and a woman that is able.
And a good edge on your trusty huntin' knife

Luv' it...
This is country!... you had me at the first measure..... such a great tune. Two thumbs and Two Big toes Up. Head to Nashville, my friend... what's that? Too old? Aren't we all... heck not you. You got too much energy and talent.

Kudos Ed. This is a really fine (no sunshine) song! Heheh..

cheers

sloparts said 3411 days ago (July 19th, 2008)
Thanks for listening Jack
I've been working on this for about a week to get it where it is now. I even posted a version a few days ago, but took it down today because I forgot to do all the drums in the mix. (Senior Moment don't ya know) ;-)

So now we have here mix number 2567 of "A Simple Life". I'm a slo learner sometime, but even a monkey will type a real word if you leave him in front of a type writer long enough. (Oh God, I'm showing my age again (type writer)) :-(

Thanks so much for the kind words Jack, Nashville here we come !

Be cool my friend

Thanks Feter,
I guess what you'd have to say about the guy in the song is that he doesn't have a clue about what's going on around him. But that's okay, he's happy just living the simple life. Now if he could just find a place to buy some ammunition, he's be ready to go hunting for Buffalo.

Thanks for dropping in for a re-listen my friend and for the sunshine. Glad you enjoyed the new version.

Be well and be cool Feter,

It's supposed to be a kind of comedy song, and I wanted to give it the drive and energy it was lacking on the first post. Now I think it works better all the way around.

Thanks again for listening and for the nice comments my friend. Always a pleasure seeing you post on one of my songs.

Take care and be cool Andreas,

Ed!
This is totally GREAT! Perfect CW tune... In fact when do you go on stage at the opery!?!?

The drums totally make this Ed compared to the first version. But actually your vocals and guitar alone can carry just about any tune!

The lyrics are killer! How did you get such a great fiddle sound??? Was it real!? Wow... That was great.

Wow... Thanks Ed! That was a trip to Nashville!!! An a great one at that!

Well thank you Mark
I knew I could make it better when I realized I'd left the drums I'd set up for it out of the last mix. Talk about your senior moments. (hehehe) Oh well, I guess it's a good thing I don't do mixing for a living, I'd go broke having to redo everything a couple dozen time.

Since you asked, the fiddle sounds are GB and Logic loops sliced and diced until I had what I wanted. Then I layered them in some places to get a slightly different sound. A little note on how I did the drums. After I laid out all of the drum tracks, (there were 2 separate tracks with many different individual parts in each), I used a little compression on them and added a flanger with a very light touch to it just to give the drums a little movement to them and a fuller sound.

Anyway, thanks for all the kind words and observations Mark, they have a way of making all the screw ups worth the effort once I finally got it all together.

Take care, stay well, and be cool my friend,

Ed

Ha ha ha
so you forgot to post the drums !!I put 'Hard to Write a Country Song' on "Icompositions" and all they got was
the very last note and a triangle chime ..doh!!Enough of this senility, this is another belter I just love this style ...tho' I couldn't name it but this is the type of sodbustin',s**tkickin, hoedowning sound that floats my boat..I was trying to get this flavour on"Jump Down"...whoops,not a plug not a plug.....oh sod it orlrighty its a bit of a plug....but I think I missed by a country mile, nevermind this gives inspiration to try again....I love the textures and layers of all the different instruments giving a genuine band/ensemble sound.Great Stuff..and the lyrics are mighty fine too..

Yep, kinda left them suckers completely out of the mix. I guess that makes me a Pro, being as how I do this stuff so well. ( ;-p

Well the error is fixed now. (was that a 404 Drums not found error) and I'm glad I pulled the other version and put this one up. It's sounds much better to my old ears.

I'm gonna go listen to Jump Down just because you blatantly plugged it in you review. (your a sneaky little devil aren't you Chris) hehe

Really glad you liked the song and the mix with the drums. Thanks for all the kind words and comments my friend, they are really appreciated.

Damn, Ed...
This is one of those songs I wished I had written. It makes a pretty good companion piece to my song, "CRAZY WORLD."

This is a fun, light-hearted romp and whereas I am more inclined to use an electric cattle prod in my lyrics, you manage to make your points with a gentle poke here and there.

Everything sounds crisp and clear. The banjo and fiddle parts are woven perfectly into this arrangement. Some great guitar pickin' in there, as well.

Maybe we've been around too long, Ed. There are a number of things that just seem a little bit out of whack. LOL

Nicely done, my friend. ;)

I just left a second review on Crazy World
Ah don't ya just love those Senior moments. Wake up in a new world, with new freinds, new home, and all this brand new music to listen to. Life doesn't get any better than this. And of course I had to close out my second review with a wise crack about you taking care "Old timer". Serves me right for being such a smart ass.

Anyway, back to this one. you might be, make that are, right about things being a little wacky. But when we were coming up in this world it was a whole different existence. A lot has changed in the last 50 odd years, and not all of it for the good. But the world is what it is, and I'm not totally unhappy about it. For one thing, places like this are a God send to people like you and I. It gives us a place to put our creative juices to work, meet some really nice folks, and have some fun.

I'm glad you like this song and I thank you again for the very kind words about it. Makes it all worthwhile, and even the Senior moments don't seem to matter after a while.

Take care, stay well and by all means, be cool my friend,

Ed

Wonderful piece of
down home fun. This is fun to listen to, I like the traditional lilt to it all. I still think you hear better than most folk Ed. This is mixed perfectly and just full of everything you need to hear in a country song without being "too much". The lyric is clever and fits like a glove on the melody. Great performance it sounds relaxed and smooth. I guess you had some fun with it from the word go, and may have subconsciously left those drums out so you could come back and tweak it some more ha ha. Thanks for giving this to us Ed.

Glad you found this one and took a shine to it. I appreciate the kind words you sent along for it too.

This has been a busy song. I posted it lasy year in August and then again as a remake on the 17th of this month. Took it down the 19th because I'd forgotten to bring the new drum part online on that mix. Then I posted a corrected version with the drums and a few other changes and this is it.

Long story for a 3 minute song, huh?

well anyway, thanks again for listening and the nice comment Maurice. Always a pleasure to see you here.

Simple is Good!
I really enjoyed this song! Good ol' toe tappin' country music. And yes, the tongue in cheek tone shines through clearly.

Couple of thoughts:

The one thing that stood out most for me is the placement of the hook. "Simple life" is placed on the 2nd line of the chorus whereas the hook would normally be the first or last line (or even both).

I thought it was interesting that you also referenced "simple life" in ONE of four verses. Again, a bit of an anomaly ... not saying it can't be done, but it isn't normally.

Then, I wonder if Verse 3 couldn't be re-written to eliminate the double reference to "buffalo" in lines 3 and 4. Felt to me like there was an opportunity to phrase this more interestingly by avoiding the double reference ... just a thought.

I jotted a down a note to mention the fact that four verses and four choruses was "an awful lot" but then checked back to see that the song clocks in at just over 2:30 .... wow, you get a lot in on this one!!! lol I guess it's just that great pace!

I loved the singing and the singer's "call-out" into the pickin' after the 3rd chorus. Great stuff!

This is just a lot of fun. I'm gonna keep coming back to listen to this one. Like it very much!

Thanks John
It pleases me that you enjoyed this song, and sent along some kind words about it.

I also appreciate you taking time to add the comments and suggestions about some things I might want to consider about the lyrics. You have some very good insights into how I might change the lyrics to make them even better, and I will consider them thoughtfully.

On your first point about the placement of the hook, one way to solve that would be to rename the something like "Life's Little Disappointments", but I'm not sure that would work out. With "A Simple Life" mentioned 5 time, once in each of the 4 choruses, and once in verse 2, that seemed a more natural Title for the song. Not sure what, if anything to do about that.

You're right of course about the hook being placed oddly compared to most songs but I'm not sure, without a complete re-write how to fix it.

In verse 3, the singer mention he needs ammunition, then states it's hard to kill a Buffalo without it, after which the guy at the dry goods store informs him that he can't kill buffalo anymore. That's the only way it makes sense.

I could re-write the last line to say something like " The guy said I can't do that anymore" or maybe "The guy told me I can't do that no more" either one would work and would fit the timing of the line and also eliminate the double reference.

On the Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus thing, I have always wished I'd done 2 verses and then the first chorus, and then a chorus after 3 and 4 to finish out the song. I never changed it because the song would be really short that way.

Slowing it down wouldn't work either, because the song would feel like it was dragging at a slower tempo. As it is now, it really cooks along great. That's one I have no answers for right now. Although I suppose I could extend the instrument break by 8 or 16 bars, or maybe use 2 breaks to give the musicians some time in the spotlight.

If I ever go back into this song and make a completely new version John, I'll keep all of this in mind. I've written down your comments and tucked them away in the fold for this song so I'll have them for reference. Your thoughts and suggestions have me thinking about this song again and I really appreciate that.

Thanks for all the great input my friend, you, you comments, and your kind words are very much appreciated.

Take care, stay well, and be cool John

Thanks Bill
This was a really fun song to do Bill. I did it because I was getting a little tired of the tear jerker songs I'd been writing before this one and wanted something that was fun and funny.

I haven't a clue where the story line came from, somewhere out in left field I think. I was hanging out with a freind of mine, "Charlie Red", at the time and we had spent a lot of time swapping songs and lyrics during that time period. I have a feeling I wrote this one just to show Charlie I could do it, and the rest is history. Of course being and old timer now, I can't remember back that far, so who knows.

So thanks again for dropping in Bill and for the kind words about the song. I'm really happy you liked it and got some enjoyment out of listening to it.

This was a really fun song to do, and this version of it in particular was great fun.

I always wanted this one to kick _ss, but up until now it was kinda lame. I think this time I've got it about as good as I can get it, without hiring some studio pro's out of Nashville to whip it into shape. So I'll leave it alone and let it ride.
