Well, here's remix #3. This time with banjo and dobro. I guess most everything else is the same as the second remix, except I took out the electric guitar, put the bass back in the middle and fixed some acoustic guitar parts. I don't know what possessed me to replace the electric guitar with dobro, but the banjo made it seem like it should have a bit more of a down-home sound. I've been listening to a Brazilian lap steel guitar player, Christiaan Oyens, lately, and got inspired to break out the bar and slide around a bit. It might be a little too slippering in terms of pitch, but maybe I'm going for more of a microtonal feel. lol
If you don't make it back to the original description a couple postings back, here goes:
"An older song, lyrics written ages ago by my son Gray Bouchard. I'd posted this before, but removed it a while back. The old version popped up on my iPod last week and was so badly mixed that it inspired me to rework it and this is a pretty well re-tooled version, with a more open sound. I had a couple other guitar tracks, and a different drum arrangement. I re-recorded the bass part and lead vocal and added the strings and a few more ambient samples from zoos and such. And an especially crackly Automat part. It's probably just at crowded as the last version, but in a different way. This isn't perfect, but I need to move onto something else and would welcome some input about where it's at right now."
I am working on other songs, I swear, but I'm really trying to put together a coherent solo CD right now and this is one of the songs that I really want to put on it. I may never get there at this rate.

Lyrics:
Good morning world…Welcome to the parade!I think you’d all agree it’s been a crazy day
I won’t deny we’re all a little shakey
When it comes down to dealing with the big boom
So I hold onto my hope and my humor
and now I’m goin’ to the zoo
Good morning world…Welcome to the parade!
There’s a pretty girl, shining like the sun today.
It’s all bravura nothing more than a charade
But that’s nothing to go into lightly
So it’s never what it seems to be up front
Don’t you worry, I’m goin’ to the zoo
Life’s constant tick tock just doesn’t stop
And I find myself in the big top… Center Ring
The monkey appears in a cameo…tapping the elixir of life
It’s a crying shame babe, but everybody’s got something to hide
Me, I’m watching for my right hand man…Heard he’s coming soon…
Got a bubble made of platinum…Custom fitted for you
It’s slight different this time around
Still I’m going to the zoo
Life’s constant tick tock just doesn’t stop
And I find myself in the big top…Center Ring

You will get there. Nice mix of insturments. I'm a sucker for a dobro and this one sounded just fine. Thanks for sharing and be well, Russ

And I love that banjo and dobro too..And also your mixing skills is very impressing on me.
I don't think I can agree w/Feter about the drums okay I'm listen w/my home stereo and not used my headphones.
And for me it's a clean good mix this as very beautiful song.
Take care

Very enjoyable all round. I like the bass tone, and the banjo is a delight. The instrumental section in the middle is wonderful ... such a mixture of complementary tones. And the almost sitar-like style of the dobro at the very end. Lovely.
Regarding solo albums, it's been my experience that you always want to keep remixing things, and that urge will never go away for the rest of your life. I can't listen to my own album without thinking "ouch, I wish I'd redone that line, and panned that guitar over a bit more". But there comes a time when you just have to let go of these thoughts and allow one of the mixes to become fixed and permanent. Good luck. I'm sure you'll get there.

this is the first version I've heard and it sounds really good to me. Really like the banjo and of course that dobro. Only thing that bothers me a little is the that snare can be distracting in some parts. Great song though. Great lyrics too.

I like the fast rolling percussion blended with the slower guitar pace and the intense vocals. An effective blend, great work, very well done. Bravo!!!

great track, i really love how you put your stuff together. that signature banjo is always a welcome sound. I actually almost bought one recently, and thought to myself "you don't want to rip off JIm." i think this is really amazing, but have to agree with the others that the snare is a bit loud in the overall mix (but really nicely done). i am always having a hard time with that myself. are you familiar with Vic Chestnutt? You sound different, but would go nicely on a tour with him (or a mixtape). great.

I hadn't thought the snare was all that loud, but I could probably take it down a bit. It's really fun to play with EZ Drummer, and I think this is one of the biggest changes with my method over the past year or so. The original was Drums on Demand, and it's just so much better to be able to write my own midi parts and tweak and tweak. That said, I can probably take care of that little loudness in the snare with no trouble, but to me a bigger problem is that some of the little snare buzzes are a little mechanical sounding and I've got to figure out a way to soften those or make them swing a bit more.
Go ahead and get the banjo, I'm certainly not unique in being a banjo player, except in the world of MacJams, for some reason. And you'll probably be better at it than I am.

I've just posted a banjo tune too. And I too have no idea what possessed me.
I love the gentleness of this tune with the laidback picking of those instruments. Beautiful. Great mix and production too.

You could put out a whole album of "Parade". The dobro works for me on this one, more so than the banjo which I find a little out of place. Whatever you do with this I'm likely to enjoy it though - a heavy metal version??
Cheers,
Neil
