I am always critical &mdash 07/23/08 - 08:20:35 PM
or at least usually, but I have a real hard time being critical of your stuff. You just slay me! Let's see, um, I can probably find something. The drums aren't too inspired I guess. It sort of goes along with what I understand the message in the song to be, though so perhaps that's appropriate. I sort of wish there was a bit more movement in the horn part, and the horns end up sounding sort of synth-y.

But I'm really digging, here. It's another great song!

hey Jim &mdash 07/23/08 - 08:56:13 PM
i left the drums pretty bland as I was going for a live, just wrote the song kind of feel (but you're right, they could be more interesting). as for the horns: man those canned horns are awful. i usually avoid them, but wanted to try this experiment. i messed with them for a while, but they sound so fake it's crazy. i may change the bridge to pedal steel instead of horns (that is if i can get in touch with a friend who plays). glad you like the song though. thanks for the listen and the feedback.

for horns &mdash 07/24/08 - 08:36:35 AM
The horns in the Orchestra Jam Pack are pretty good if you really want horns. There's probably other horns samples out there that are better than the stock GB software instruments, but I like the Orchestra Jam Pack because it has a broad selection of instruments that are usable, with the strings and percussion and horns. And the horns might work. I think in one of the Boldt free instrument packs there's some better horns as well.

If you want some steel guitar (non-pedal but electric Harmony lap steel) and your friend can't do it, send me a note and I could take a pass at it.

Song &mdash 07/23/08 - 09:38:56 PM
I like where this is going. The vocal is just right to me. I would like to hear this "acoustic" also to get a better feel for which way to go: more harmonies and guitars or less. Either way the way the intensity builds for the choruses sounds great.

Thanks
Bill

it makes me happy that you liked it. I may try to do a remix, with acoustic gtr and more harmonies. I like the song, but something about the bridge isn't sitting right with me. can't put my finger on it though, could be the vocal delivery or the melody. thanks for listening and for your comments.

oh vic &mdash 07/24/08 - 01:26:48 AM
it's a long story: so much drama. Paul kept insisting he was going to play drums, and that Ringo could sing it. Usually George would have sided with me, but he was off in Nepal somewhere doing field recordings of indigenous peoples, and Yoko never liked me, so John stayed out of it. In the end, I just blew those guys off and joined forces with HUmble Pie. They hated the song, and it has remained in the vaults until today.

great laid back tune. if you revisit definitely get your friend to add the steel. that would sound amazing over this. like the drums. did you tap it out with your keyboard?

glad you liked it. lately I've been into this idea of blending indie rock with hippie music. Something you could listen to while walking barefoot in a meadow with your lady and a bottle of wine. The drums are drums on demand that i chopped up a bit.

Great voice, wonderful performance, a beautiful song, bravo!!!

I wouldn't change a thing &mdash 07/24/08 - 08:31:35 AM
It's near perfect as is. My only beef with the horns is how canned they sound at the very end (the note that holds). I actually kind of like how they sound throughout the rest of the tune. They're subtley placed so the focus isn't on how real they sound, but the place they take the song.

1st off, what an insane pic. I love it. The song is fantastic. A peaceful lovely feel. Your voice just floats across space. There's a very cool instrument/synth? you use on the chorus. Adds a neat flavor. Very subtle

You know what......? &mdash 07/24/08 - 09:37:00 AM
I just turned this up and leaned back in my chair and mellowed out. Sort of a Beck-ish thing from Mutations. Nice laid back melody.

Certainly, one of your best.

See ya around,

Nice one &mdash 07/24/08 - 10:25:47 AM
Somewhere in between the Beatles and early Grateful Dead I think.

Lovely arrangement. Superb vocals.

Photo is reminiscent of PF's "Wish You Were Here" cover.

I agree with Lennon714 re the horns, but it's so hard to get synthed horns to sound real.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this laid back and friendly song Michael.

Be well friend!

A way of making some rather simple chord arrangements sound so perfect and good. Ya know I would like to criticize this, but when its your song It always sounds perfect to me

You're filling &mdash 07/24/08 - 12:16:01 PM
up my Itunes man, great song. It has a cool vibe to it. It reminded me of Nirvana, mostly because of how you sang it. I didn't think horns sounded all that canned, you did a good job of tweaking them. I do have one nit ... the hiss, it might be from those single coil pickups in the tele (I have a 98) I have trouble with an audible hiss when I use my tele with my digitech processor. All in all a great tune, with incredible lyrics and a solid performance behind it. Thanks for the download.

[ Reply to This ]
you know &mdash 07/24/08 - 12:58:36 PM
i totally zeroed in on the hiss, and thought about trying to EQ it out, but figured after awhile that it was a part of the song. they got some probs, but don't you just love a tele? that thing has been around the world and back with me. thanks for your comments and the listen.

cool songwriting &mdash 07/24/08 - 04:36:55 PM
You sure have a talent for making brilliant melodies and compositions. The laid back style of playing suits this one very good in my opinion. I think I'm with Jim on the drums and the horns though. But the quality of your performance and songwriting shines through anyway.

I think that the way you have arranged the horns might be the reason for them sounding more like a synth/string section than a horn section. I think those long notes gives that feel. But platic horns will always be ust that;)

Maybe it could be interesting to replace them with a distorted guitar holding those long notes, or maybe an B3 organ...

If you'd rather have a horn section I think that getting some real horns in there and maybe alter the arrangement for them a bit could do the trick. What about a sax, a trumpet and one bass/bariton/trombone to get some boom in there...:)

Nice mix, cool vibe. You have a real way with a melody. The horns sound a bit dodgy and kind of break the mood a bit - as Jim says, the horns in the Orch JamPack are pretty good.

I like this one a lot.

the frustrating thing is that's the horns that I used. couldn't get a decent horn stabs sound. everything else seems to be passable in MIDI, but the horns are just awful to my ears (then there is the fact that I don't know how to write a horn arrangement). trying to get together a MJ horn section to redo this one. thanks so much for your feedback and the listen.

Wow... &mdash 07/25/08 - 12:24:44 AM
so many questions. is that wurlitzer/rhodes sound from our m-audio? It sounds too good to be midi. Also, is that your real voice? I don't remember hearing it on your other songs.... It sounds really good. Got a lot of good character to it. This is a really good song. Totally radio ready.
NO amateur sounds that I could hear at all, but then I'm no pro at producing. B

thanks man &mdash 07/25/08 - 01:48:38 AM
yeah that wurli sound is MIDI. I think it actually sounds pretty good which is surprising. it's the one that came with GB. it's especially weird that I use it so often, as I have a really nice Rhodes here at my house; I just find the MIDI thing to be easier to set uo and use. thanks for listening. vocal compliments are always welcome as I was never really comfortable with singing (originally started when I couldn't find a singer). thanks again.

indie rock? &mdash 07/25/08 - 07:34:14 PM
the genre (not that it's important) could almost be indie rock for this one. great vocal performance! best yet, perhaps? i love the laid back feel. i like the drums. simple, with a lot of room.

i don't know if i'd change anything in the mix. maybe (and it's just a maybe) take the synth pad at the end down a db, and the rhodes piano up a db. the that's purely a taste thing. thanks for sharing!

I love the way this just rolls out and slides across the floor and ripples up the wall and wraps itself around my head. Very subtle horn section - excellent way to go for it - was expecting something brassier from the description - but this is just right and fits in beautifully. Great track.

There's such a... &mdash 07/26/08 - 04:10:05 PM
...laid-back, mellow feeling about this number and the chorus rises up in just the right spot for the lift that the tune needs. Your mix of instruments is just right throughout. I wish I could hear the vocals a little more clearly -- I am missing some of the lyrics -- but my hearing isn't maybe so hot these days. The quality of your voice is very pleasant indeed...and harmonies work beautifully. Very nice number.
Peace.

so glad you like this one. i don't think you're losing your hearing, it's a thing i have about mixing vox. i came from an indie rock background, and vox were just mixed in with the instruments since no one knew how to mix right and did everything super fast. eventually it just became an aesthetic that I have grown fond of. i always equate big up front vox with major label music. god, that sounds snobby and I didn't mean it to. i guess it's just a taste thing. i'm so happy you like this though, thanks so much for the listen and the comment.

Nice under whatever genre u choose &mdash 07/27/08 - 01:04:24 AM
I agree with ALL the nice things that have already been said so I'll skip ahead to an attempt to be constructive:

I think the bridge is good, but suspect it could be better. The vocal is fine but perhaps the melody strays too far from the overall feel of the piece. Maybe something even simpler, closer the main melody would work better.

Heath &mdash 07/27/08 - 10:12:24 AM
you hit the nail on the head. that's exactly how I feel about the bridge. i don't completely hate it, but it could definitely be better. problem is that I have the current bridge stuck in my head and will have to get it out before I can revise. this part of the song was improvised, and my intention was just to break up the song. i listen to it, and hear something that lacks the melody of the rest of the song, and truthfully I hate the way I sang it (it's like faux soulful - i know i'm not soulful so i don't usually go there). but as I said, this was an experiment and I was hoping for feedback. thanks for the listen and for your comments.

Hi Michael! First of all, thanks for the note - sorry, I've been away on vacation and am just now trying to make a dent in the my backlog of listening. Anything from Michael2 is tops on my list to get to ASAP. I think the horns are a great idea, your vocals here are terrific, and I don't know how you make that m-audio sound so good either. You're just a wizard I guess!

Micheal &mdash 07/28/08 - 04:47:22 PM
As always I love the vocals and in general the song but I found this one a little repetitive.

It could have used some bigger changes to keep it interesting... even the chorus or bridge whatever it is called is the same set of chord changes. The first really big change didn't come till over 3 mins in.

Ya this coming from Mr. Repetitive song himself... Well again I'm just pointing out what occurs to me! I certainly am guilty of the same thing!

Nit picking here because Micheal this is like virtually all of your other works a truly great song. Lots of mean in the lyrics and the sound bed creates a good place for those lyrics to live.

I also couldn't pick out the horns very well until the change and the very end. They seem sort of buried in the mix.

THANKS FOR LISTENING &mdash 07/28/08 - 04:56:38 PM
oops, sorry about the caps. glad you liked, as far as being repetitious goes: I think that's a style and taste thing. i really love music that just kind of ambles aimlessly, but i know it comes across as not fully developed to some. my doubts about this one are with the bridge (the big change). but i'm really glad you liked it and were able to amble along with it. thanks so much for listening and commenting Mark.
