Spiders are spinning away in the trees (1)
Description:
This is the first 'real' collab micheal and I have done. We had planned to do a big Oasis style version of another song of mine, but I had this melody kicking around in my head for a while that I thought would work better. So, I wrote a song around it, recorded a demo (acoustic guitar and vocals) and sent it to michael for feedback. He dug it and added a ton of tracks for me to pick and choose from. Everything he recorded was absolute gold and it felt like Christmas putting this thing together. I mixed in his tracks, added a few more of my own, and this here is the result. If michael and I were in a band together 10 years ago, this is what it would sound like. We probably wouldn't have gotten a record deal, but we would have had a hell of a good time.

Lyrics:
Nobody knows all the colors I've seen
Nobody knows all the places I've been
Nobody understands just what I mean
So I will explain it to you

Pack your bags we leave tommorrow
And say goodbye to all your friends
Cuz I will take you to a new home
Where the daylight never ends

But when you're there, you're there forever
You can never come back here
I'll be standing right beside you
And we will live a thousand years

Nobody knows all the colors I've seen
Nobody's been to the places I've been
Nobody understands just what I mean
So I will explain it to you

So what's with all the hesitation?
Why can't you make up your mind?
You need a place where you can be yourself
And you can leave your past behind

So leave it all and float away with me
Gravity won't stop us now
There's too many things I want you to see
So we won't let them slow us down

Last night I dreamed of you
A hundred flowers in your hair
And when I turned around to look for you
You weren't there

Nobody knows all the colors I've seen
And nobody's been to the places I've been
Nobody understands just what I mean
So I will explain it to you

thanks feter. yeah there's a lot of other stuff going on here for sure than in a typical Oasis ballad, but I was definitely going for a lazy kind of Liam Gallagher vocal delivery. more more more on the way!

A very, very fine melody... And strong vocals... And also good instruments.... Really a pleasure to listen to.... Great collab....

melody &mdash 07/25/08 - 03:15:35 PM
It's funny - the melody is very similar to the theme song of a kid's show here in Canada. I discovered this after I recorded and actually went back and changed it up a little. I guess it's true about what they say about music - everything's been done before. Thanks a lot for the kind words.

Unbelievable &mdash 07/25/08 - 08:28:41 AM
This is a ridiculous tune. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Winston Churchill, wearied from holding off Nazi air raids, was quoted as saying, "Being saturated and satiated with emotion and sensation, I went to bed and slept the sleep of the saved and thankful".

That's pretty much the only way to effectively express how much I love this song. No shit.

hah thanks eric. good analogy. I felt the same when michael sent me all his additions. He did it in a couple of hours too I think (if that). I'm really glad you like this. Oh - I got your email but I havent tried to open the song yet - will do this wknd.

can imagine Michael sent you some gems and fun little bits to put in that song. There's something new every time I listen to it (which at last count is 5 today).

Yeah it's a good listen in the 'phones as well if you want to hear everything. I like it loud though through the open air - those giant bass drums during the post chorus build in particular hit you right in the chest

Great collab. Nice simple chord progression with all kinds of guitar funny stuff going on in back, not what I expected. Love the vocals and great lyrics.
Thanks, Russ

Yeah. What I initially sent michael was very bare - just acoustics and vocals. He really took it to the next level. I'm curious though as to what you did expect?

Nobody Knows &mdash 07/25/08 - 03:41:38 PM
I guess to me this tune has a 70's rock ballad style.( I am a old guy) So now with the tempo, and chord progression and the vocals slow moving, clear and crisp. When the guitar comes in (and you know it will) I expected to hear a guitar where the notes were picked like a Richie Sambora or a Van Zant type signature. Please, Please understand it was a pleasent surprise, Great tune.

holy crap. your lips are flaming! &mdash 07/25/08 - 11:58:28 AM
ok, whoever played the flat fifth in my left speaker (ebow?) in the verse resolving to the fifth is an absolute genius. bravo!!

this whole song is fantastic. let me point out some of the subtleties that i liked. great vocal performance, ridd. very relaxed. i like that you took your time (just enough time) getting to the notes. mix is cool. you have a stereo sounding patch on the bass (if i'm not mistaken) and its working for me. normally i am a staunch mono, down the middle bass guy. 'worlds are colliding, jerry!'

great harmonies too. is that michael doing the low octive in the 2nd verse? nice! like the sesame street mic! i think, ridd, those harmonies you used in the intro could be used in the choruses too. maybe? not the first one, obviously, but the latter ones. regardless, great job - both of you!

&mdash 07/25/08 - 03:25:36 PM
thanks scott. that flat fifth was michael - and it had the same effect on me. Brilliant. Same with that last note at the end he played.
Thanks for the suggestion - I think you're totally right about the harmomnies in the other choruses. Will definitley try it next mix. The bass was an experiment as I'm usually a right down the middle guy too. Seemed to work out alright though. I like to hear it chugging along in there. Thanks for the feedback. Looking forward to your next one (hurry up!)

hey &mdash 07/25/08 - 02:44:50 PM
i love how this turned out. you mixed this so well it's unbelievable. too bad for you, as from now on you will be mixing everything I record (kind of like my own in house guy). this was a blast for me, I think we really get each other and came from the same background. this was easy, easy, easy for me. any excuse to make noise. if anyone is wondering why the guitar sounds that way: i tuned the top 3 strings to a B and then played them all at once with a slide and some fuzz. not that you'd want to do it, just letting you know so you don't do it accidentally or something. great job writing and mixing this little jewel.

Sweet &mdash 07/25/08 - 11:13:36 PM
Great hook here. I'm a sucker for feedback and really enjoy when it kicks in. This track is so well produced.
The Oasis is obvious but I also here a little Blur in there. Some of the harmonies are straight up beatles.
What a tasteful production and tight arrangements!

Your acoustic sounds amazingly crisp! What a great performance from you guys.

thanks dude. that's actually a slide/ebow combo I think your mistaking for feedback. yeah michael threw some beatles harmonies behind my lead vocal and I agree it sounds super niiiiice. thanks for the feedback

Oasis/Blur/Beatles 4 sure &mdash 07/26/08 - 01:35:04 AM
There's an almost imperceptibly slightly late kick "event" at 0:59 - how sad is it that that's all I can find to nitpick over! ;)

I've never been a big Oasis fan (partly because of their attitude), but I loved Blur and the Beatles.

A very good post - must have been a blast to do.

hah I wondered if anyone would catch that. I went back and tightened the fills and I guess I missed that one. Oasis definitely has an attitude to be desired, but noel's written some incredible songs that makes me live with it. Still, I can see why some would be turned off by them.
Thanks a lot for stopping by and checking this out Neil. I'm glad you like it. And yes, it was definitely a blast. Can't wait to collab with michael again.

British Rock Sound! :D &mdash 07/26/08 - 02:27:07 AM
Nice work here. I really enjoy how the song flows with the vocals and has a laid back feel to it- has that British rock sound to it for sure! Many people here try vocals and they don't fit but this works perfect! The guitars are great in it too! Anyways I look forward to your future works and keep up the great work here! Cheers! :D

[ Reply to This ]
&mdash 07/26/08 - 10:57:02 PM
Thanks for that. One of the things important to me I tried to do with the vocals was not do an impression of that kind of style. I didn't want to sound like an American trying to sing in a British accent. So, I tried to sing it as natural as possible with 'my own' voice, but incorporate some of the techniques Brit rockers tend to use when singing, like a bit of a lazy laid back delivery and long drawn out words. It helps that that's usually how I sing anyway, but I took it a little further with this one. I hope I pulled it off. Thanks for the feedback I'm happy you enjoyed it.

I agree with jiguma &mdash 07/26/08 - 08:55:14 AM
I have always thought that Oasis were 3rd rate hacks. When I still lived in England a few yrs back, it amused me no end when I was a cover band call 'No Way Sis' play live. They got the look, attitude and sound of Oasis perfectly but their best songs were covers of Blur tunes.
Anyway...I can understand the Oasis comparisons here, but this track is in a totally different league to anything the Gallagher's ever did or ever will do
Nice writing, playing, sing and mixing
Bravo!

Nice Tune! &mdash 07/26/08 - 12:44:10 PM
Great song and excellent production. Has that English Manchester sound (at least, I think it is) of Blur and Oasis, but it also stands on its own. One of my favorite parts is the clean, twangy guitar in the first verse. All of the guitar work is top-notch. Lots of different sounds and it all fits nicely in the music. Lots of stuff going on in here and you guys totally pull it of. Props to you and GB '08!!

[ Reply to This ]
&mdash 07/26/08 - 11:04:59 PM
Yeah that's one of my favorite parts too. I tried to channel Pavement's 'Range Life' for that twangy verse guitar. I wanted to keep it sloppy and just kind of improvised it. As for the crazy '3-strings-tuned-to-B' slide part, michael's to blame for that brilliance. First time I heard it I smiled so hard my face hurt.

Lovely melodic track, and great vocal performances. The harmonies and backing vocals work perfectly. The instrumentation is layered and inventive, but never overwhelming or cluttered. Some lovely touches (like the melody echoed by the backing vocals after the lines on the third and fourth verses) that really give it a unique feel. Wonderful collab, and I sincerely hope we get to hear more of the two of you together. Nicely done, gents. Kudos. Peace.
