Lyrics
life is long and cold, you see
and i'm not strong, so it doesn't suit me
so i'll keep moving around trying to sooth my restless feet
and i'll keep running away from everything i meet

running away from everything well that's the story of my life
running away from you and me you know i had to take that flight
running away but i can't see so i try to feel the light
longing for that place i'll be locked up in your bright

so light another smoke and put down your guitar
we're moving along again this time in a stolen car
just wanna see your face again one last and lonely time
i can't believe i'm heading home, i can't believe you're mine

driving through these hills close to veering out of sight
cause pennsylvania kills but i'll be seeing you dear tonight
lying in your bed again and wrapped up in your white
a little voice inside my head tells me everything's alright

running away from everything well that's the story of my life
running away from you and me you know i had to take that flight
running away but i can't see so i try to feel the light
longing for that place i'll be locked up in your bright

Tempo
I have some issues with the tempo is all. It sounds like the piano runs at a very slow tempo, and then speeds up whenever the vocals come in. It's interesting if it's what you meant to do, but otherwise it kind of seems off.
It just bugs me because I feel like you have this beautiful piano, and these beautiful lyrics and a beautiful voice, but I feel like the vocals are rushed and thus chop up the song. I'd prefer to hear something where you really mastered and held every note. Good work and nice piece, but try something with a steady tempo and maybe some matching variation in verse and chorus vocals and piano

tempo yes
yeah - i don't play to a beat. haha. did notice the pushing of the tempo at points but it's a first take demo so i didn't mind. i'm sure i will redo this properly in the studio. :)

beautiful song, kinda like the roughness of the recording....though it could use some fine tuning....a very nice piece regardless...kinda like Billy Joel w/ a softer attack on the vocals

hey feter -

thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to listen!

I'm with
Feter here. An honest and heartfelt song sung very expressively and convincingly. Apart from a couple of small hiccups, I really like the urgency of the piano playing too, gives it a real and unusual feel.
Cheers
Len

the fun with computers
is that have a million sounds at your disposal. There's nothing wrong with writing at the piano, but unless your Billy Joel or Elton John (or Gilbert O'Sullivan) you may want to throw in some more sounds than just the piano when you actually record it.

Nice song writing, deserves better execution.

the fun with computers
the fun with computers overwhelms me, i must say, vic. barely have the patience to lay down the track as it is. i know that the song deserves better execution and it will get it eventually, just thought i'd share in the meantime.

thanks for the comments!

wow
the piano really brings out a different dimension to your writing....really great color and warmth here.... I love how freely the meter slips and slides..... a very free feeling.... I like that you always really sound like you believe every word you sing....something that is greatly missing these days in this word of fluff.... fluff you are not.... this is the real deal.... thanks for sharing....peace....Ian

I'm just totally digging on these lyrics, Darren. I'm looking forward to hearing a more polished version of this, but I'm really glad you didn't wait to let us hear it. There's something just cool in this digital age about hearing a real guy (that would be you) sitting down at his yamaha digital piano thing and bashing out a song in one take and singing with his guts hanging out.

This song is a winner, though. It's one of your strongest, I think, and that's saying a lot, so absolutely do develop this song and for goodness sake put it on an album someday.

sounds like
your doing it all in one take? very impressive vocals.
I heard a few off notes but that ok by me. I think if you slow down the singing and maybe the piano just a hair it would improve it. Dont get me wrong over all its a great song with great lyrics. Also it has a kind of staying power, even after it is finished it still stays in your mind. Enjoyed thanks!

Very raw
and that gives it a certain charm, and the same can be said for the tempo changes that CTS pointed out however that gives it an edge and the fact you did this live (and only playing piano since Feb) makes this track special. The lyrics are very well written and sung.
I also look forward to hearing the finished studio version, but this demo has a raw energy and charm that might be lost, I hope not but it might. Very well done.

hey thanks diviner...

yeah, i'm hoping that it doesn't lose anything in the studio, myself. except the mistakes, of course. i may just do it live again as i'm not sure anything will be added to it. we'll see!

thanks again,

an extemporaneous speech, this isn't perfect but still perfectly intimate and natural. I hope you do something more with it. Pretty good for just having learned. Thanks.
