Description:
Why "Homage to a Spitfish" you ask?
Well a long time ago in a hick town far far away and musical adventure took place. Three brothers from Edgewood, KY (the state not the lubricant) put a band together. Their name "Spitfish" came from a Johnny Hart "BC" comic strip.
Eventually, me and the youngest brother of Spitfish, Jim Nolan, crossed paths at the College of Mount St. Joseph, in Delhi Township, Cincinnati, Ohio, as we were both pursuing a degree in graphic design.
Two years my junior, Jim was always mistaken for my younger brother...could be the unkempt hairstyles we both sported or our pallid complexions or the fact that both of us were no taller than a Smurf®.
Through Jim's freshman and sophomore years, which coincided with my junior and senior years at Mt. St. Joe, he and I wrote and performed together with Tim Savage as a very unprofessional but always fun alt/folk/rock band called "Red Over Green"
Through the years we spent together, we amassed a total of a half a dozen songs we composed, and performed them along with a small handful of obligatory cover versions (including REM's "King of Birds", "Fall On Me", and "Driver 8", as well as Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit")
Upon my graduation in 1990, Red Over Green ceased to exist, and Spitfish was on hiatus. Since then, Spitfish has reunited and hopefully soon 2/3's of Red Over Green will perform together again. Until then, we are left with happy memories of 64 weeks of good fun, good music....a little bit of uh huh and a whole lotta oh yeah!
So this composition is another fusion of multiple songs first composed from Red Over Green and Spitfish and the Sleepers era (*Sleepers...what it was called when Tim and I were involved in the Nolan brothers' fun and games, Red Over Green when it was just Jim, Tim and me)
Best,
Eddie

love the backstory of this... a song kind of about music. always a good thing.
awesome guitar sound. keep wanting someone to sing is the only thing. dig out those piles of lyrics!

And, this one is no exception. I am really comfortable with your synthesis of melody and rock. Thanks.

.. I kept waiting for the lyrics to come in - this could be really cool with vocals. I kept getting flashes of "Centrefold" (was that J Geils Band?) from the guitar melody.
Eddie, I couldn't figure out who was playing what here - were any of the others involved? Some of my best (and some of my worst) memories are of the "good old days" when I was gigging regularly. I think I may have no memory at all of some of the moments of course. I've recently been back in touch with a lot of the members from my old bands, and it's been very enjoyable.
Thanks for posting.

Guilty as charged....this is jus' lil' ol' me on this track.....
it's another attempt to recreate multiple songs we did as kind of a medley, one part Spitfish and two parts Red Over Green and simmer over low heat for an hour....on my own w/ my guitar, midi keyboard for organ and bass and Garage Band drum loops...and surprisingly...the rhythm guitar sounds pretty accurate to how it sounded over 20 years ago with the settings on the guitar (turn the bridge double humbucker down to single, add flanger and clean amp simulation and voila, my BC Rich Mockingbird sounds like Jim's Stratocaster did when we played it many moons, beers and taco flavored Doritos® ago)
I left a message for Jim tonight to "Get me the lyrics if you can find them!!!!" as he was the one that wrote most of the lyrics for Spitfish and Red Over Green

one of your best. the guitars really "sing" in this. Well played and arranged. While it stands very securely on it's own, I hear lyrics and a vocal in this, and I hope it gets that treatment one day. Very cool song I really enjoyed my listen.
There is a hiss that your guitar processor is making (I think thats it) it sounds like its on the lead guitar with the breaks between it's runs. That is where it's most noticeable anyway. Upon my second listen with the headphones on it also sounded a little on the dry side. I think a touch of reverb one the drums might even it out. When the lead guitar comes in the keys are all but totally buried. A counter melody with the keys while the lead is soaring might bring it out, or maybe a small db boost over all. Just my thoughts on a great piece of work.

I forgot... I really enjoyed the back story. Brought up some good memories for me.

It did for me too, insomuch as I called Jim (Nolan from Spitfish) and we talked for an hour, reminiscing about college days and stuff...how we've grown up since we graduated...how our music has matured...how we've matured...it was great just yammering on the phone w/ him last night...
and Homage to a Spitfish is exactly that, as he and his brothers' friendship was very important to me as a musician and always loved the roustabouts in the Nolan Attic when we were in college

Great backstory Eddie - this is one of the best songs I've heard from you - moves along in a very enrapting way (is that a word?). I agree about the vocals - would be a terrific addition.

Glad I saw the song reference in chat.
Love the backstory and the fact this song is a tribute to yesterday's music.
Great vibe that definitely could be paired with some vocals! :)
Thanks for posting

this is an excellent example of how inspiration works in mysterious ways. what i really appreciate about this song is the emotion coming out. great job on giving it the sound, the music. very nice guitar playing. cheers ;)

EEFliess! You made a nice and enjoyable piece that's laid back. It's a very fun song with the electric guitars and the double track to back it up. I'm adding this to my favorites for sure. Your tale behind this was enjoyable too from your life. It adds more to it rather than some random song. I look forward to more of your works in the near future :)

Eddie, this is great. I'm sitting here just enjoying the nostalgia of your story and the easy rhythm and flow of your music. Very smooth and great sound on this. What better way to enjoy those old memories than with music? Thanks for sharing this - truly enjoyed.

Jim, Ted and Dan Nolan grew up in Edgewood which is a back in the sticks suburb of Covington :)

This a great song but it really needs lyrics, perhaps a duo male/female voice would be great. A guitar solo would be great!

Keys are the first sound that really noticed...then the guitars

Very strong guitar theme here. And quite an ensemble of guitars playing. Will there be more tunes resurrected from this era? This is really good stuff!
Thanks

How did I miss this one? The guitar is top-notch here. Screaming for singing, though. Really nice sound and it hooks the ear in a lot.

Gems !!! Eddie They are all soo catchy and your guitar chords and melodies sound awsome . Thanks for the download.
