Susie's song

Description
This is another old song from around 1978. Our band member Roger wrote this and one day our drummer couldn't show for practice so we spent the day working on this piece then did a live recording of it which luckily I found.

Roger is on acoustic guitar
Jeff is on acoustic guitar (picking)
Mark is on piano
Wade is on electric lead

The tape recorder was a simple stereo cassette. We had two mics. One near the piano and one a little too near Wades amp for the lead. We sang loud so as to get the vocals in. Roger who did most of the vocal lead was right near the piano mic so he came through pretty well.

A warning! The lead guitar is kind of loud and piercing in this! You might start with your volume down a bit.

I always found this song enjoyable not only to play but to listen to. I'll try to get the lyrics either copied down or from Roger.

Enjoy!

A very appealing song-
there's a certain honesty to be found in recordings like this and I love them. A good song and a good performance as well, an event preserved- and of course for you it comes with it's own special memories. The music its self reminded me overall of somewhere between the Beatles and Badfinger.

A fave,

John.

I can see why it holds
a special place for you. It takes you back. Yes. Please do give the song the treatment it deserves. The people in photo albums get old. Music never does. Thank you.

Thank you Char
Yes some of my happiest days were the old band days. How I loved just playing music all afternoon long. Too bad we never made a living at it! I think it could have been fun. But then again I've heard that a living in the music business can be hard.

Anyway thanks so much for the listen! Your comments are always welcome!

Mr Feter!
You are always a ray of sunshine in a sometimes dark world!

We had fun with this song. I particularly like it for some reason. Not sure why...

Thanks for the listen and the comment my friend!

right then mark...
man this just is too cool ... i love the feel of the tune and the "live" recording just makes it better. Terry and I spent a few zillion hours in front of a "reel" machine ... takes me back ... thanks for the trip and ... why don't YOU re do this tune??

nice sweet tune
the tune itself holds up pretty well after the years. yeah as woofer states there is a bit of the Badfinger vibe. Kind of a miracle that the tape hasn't decomposed after all the years

Ah
good old analogue cassette - they'll probably outlast those shiny CD-R discs... Nice song - worth a redo if possible but still good as it is - even with the piercing lead guitar. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks Peter
Ya the lead is kind of annoying. When Wade would go to lead he would flip his switch to the treble pickup and his guitar had two volume knobs. One for treble and one for mid/bass pickup. His treble pickup was just up too high for this live version.

But hey... it still does sound pretty good!

Beach boys...
funny... I used to work as a charter pilot right about the time we were doing some of this stuff. I used to regularly ferry Mike Love and his son and agent down to LAX from Santa Barbara.

Maybe I should have played these tapes for him!?

Hi Shay!
Having you drop in on one of my tunes is sure a treat!

Like I told Karen above... I practiced this thing for like 5 hours straight before we recorded it. I'm sure I could have played it while sound asleep.

It is not a difficult piano part in the least. But ya the song holds a draw for me that I can't explain. I think perhaps you and John have hit up on it. A straight forward honesty that sort of takes hold of you and makes you listen.

Thanks so much for coming by!

nice
one Mark. you know for some reason this sounds stangely contemporary to me. could be that all of the indie bands i listen to have classic rock fetishes. i really like the melody and the sound of everything. fun to listen to old stuff. would love to hear a version with drums as well.

Very cool
This sounds great. The song is very good, and the performance is solid. Piano is, of course, great! An excellent performance and a memorable performance. WOuld be nice to hear it with the vocal higher and drums, of course, but this is a great recording in itself. Very cool. Glad you found it, and thanks for sharing it. Peace.

I agree
With the idea of a kind of raw, first take, record it and bag it version of a song is sometimes the best. This is one of the times. Great tune.

RE: Live take
Yes, I can tell and it sounds like you guys were playing a lot back in those days and the harmonies came very natural. This is a little before my time but I remember being in restaurants with my folks and the bands in the bar would be doing stuff like this. Seems like back then most bands were pretty darn good and you could make a decent living playing out nearly every night of the week.

Susie's song by MarkHolbrook
Straightforward and honest sounding! It's simple and
doesn%u2019t sound too digital and too techno, back to the roots! Causes one to reminisce. Nice job!
MarkHolbrook said 474 days ago (August 4th, 2008)
Thank you so much PG...
It was non-digital, non-techno... Just a bunch of guys with a little gear laying down a track or two on analog tape.
