Description:
Talking to myself?

Lyrics:
Talking to Myself

I can hide the fever
But I can’t help it if I need her
Yeah it’s not dreaming if you’re living it
You do your dance
And honey you get what you get

Follower or leader
Yeah I was both and now I’m neither
I hold my tongue until I suffocate
My head explodes
And baby I’m adrift again

It’s easier to see when I close my eyes
I guess I think right now is where I want to be
If you call that wise
I speak the truth but I’m just talking to myself

You blame it on a feeling
But I don’t think you’re even breathing
If I had sense I’d run away again
I’ll take the heat
But honey I won’t take the blame

Bleary-eyed and reeling
Where’s a dreamer when you need one?
Morning breaks
We’re on the road again
The ground is moving
But I think I know the way

Too smart for your own good God where does a dreamer draw the line?

Sorry to hear I'm making you late, but also kind of delighted that my little ditty would hold you up! Glad you like it. 'Mover' sounds perfect. I couldn't ask for anything more. I appreciate your encouraging words as always. By the way, I'll be sending you something later today - hope it's what you need! Thanks, man. Peace.

Seeing you makes me think this would have sounded good with piano on the intro. Why didn't I think of that before?! Thanks for listening, and I'm very happy you enjoyed it; you are way too kind! Thanks again. Much appreciated. Peace.

You have &mdash 07/31/08 - 09:16:00 AM
a great guitar sound on this David. Production sounds very soild and balanced. I wouldn't mind an acoustic added here and there, perhaps on the chorus. But I like it as it is anyway...

I take great encouragement from your words on the production. I see what you mean about the acoustic. Honestly, I'm trying to avoid using acoustic, not because I don't still love it, but just because I want to try to push myself to try some different stuff. Of course, that doesn't mean I won't go back and add it later! Thanks for listening and commenting, Peter. Cheers. Peace.

A mover is right! DA nailed it. You start listening to this and you just can't avoid staring to nod your head with the beat or tap your foot.

Add to that your amazingly great vocals, tasteful and meaningful lyrics.... man this should be radio play!

I'm very glad you liked this, and happy it got you moving. The lyrics did not stem from any concrete idea or theme really. Basically they grew from one line (the first one) and then I came up with 'It's easier to see when I close my eyes' and ended up just trying to make everything work around that. I don't think I even really know what most of them mean (at least not consciously!) but I hope they resonate in some way. Thanks for checking this one out, Mark. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Definitely a toe tapper. This is a great song overall. The balance of guitars, bass and drums is just right in my ears. Love the lyrics and vocals. I think you are right - some keys in there would sound great! Thanks for a fun tune!

I'm delighted you enjoyed this. Thanks for your kind words. I'm especially glad I got your toes tapping! The balance on this one was a little tricky. I found it hard to get the bass right (I still think it's a little dominant in the mix, to be honest) and I'm happy you like the balance I eventually got. Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated. Peace.

very cool &mdash 07/31/08 - 01:34:07 PM
your voice sounds great, almost like Bryan Ferry at times. nice groove between the drums and that fat rhythm sound. "I%u2019ll take the heat
But honey I won%u2019t take the blame" great line. no constructive criticism, except maybe the hi-hat is a little loud in the choruses (minor criticism from someone who has been stressing out over a kick drum level for 2 days and still can't get it right). great job.

Thanks, man &mdash 07/31/08 - 02:09:59 PM
Glad you liked this. I know exactly what you mean about the hi-hat. The drums are Drums on Demand, and I'm usually very happy with them, but this loop (which of course I decided was the only possible one I could use on the track!) had that insistent hi-hat thing going on. I actually did quite a bit of chopping on the verse loops to get rid of some the hi-hat, but I was stumped as to how to do anything to the chorus. Hope it wasn't too distracting. Thanks for stopping by and checking this one out. Cheers. Peace.

great song! &mdash 07/31/08 - 03:35:45 PM
This is a prime example of smart, infectious pop music. I think everything flows well and the lyrics are unique, interesting, and still relatable. My only criticism comes with the arpeggiated guitar in the choruses. It sounds just a hair too hot to me. But take that with a grain of salt because i'm listening with my cheap headphones at work. The bass however, it fantastic. Great great great bassline! Really sets the groove off!

Wow &mdash 07/31/08 - 04:10:11 PM
Thanks, man. You are way too kind. Thanks for the comment on the bass - glad you think it works. I'm also happy you found the lyrics relatable - that always means a lot to me. I think I know what you mean about the guitar over the chorus, now that I listen to it. That's what I love about this place - so many great ears! I'll definitely look into revisiting that. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

I hated that guitar tone... &mdash 07/31/08 - 05:57:28 PM
...right at the beginning...I thought it sounded kind of dead...but I trusted you... I said to myself, David's gonna take this someplace, and it'll be GOOD...

By the time everything's doing its thing in the mix, everything's perfect and in its place...

I continue to admire and enjoy your songwriting and your voice as I do few others...

I'm glad you started out hating it and then changed your opinion, and not the other way round! I know what you mean about that guitar tone. I was aiming for a kind of no-frills intro, including the lack of effects on the voice. Perhaps I went too far in that direction! Glad you enjoyed the song, and thank you as always for your encouraging words. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Oh this is sooo Nice &mdash 07/31/08 - 08:19:32 PM
Great lyrics David and wonderful production on it, although I would have liked to see an ending on it instead of a fade out. (Personal preference, but it doesn't hurt the song)

The only other thing I noticed, and I'm sure it was a production decision on your part, was the fairly large volume increase between the intro and when the music hit. I can understand you not wanting the vocal too hot in the beginning, when the music is quiet, but the jump in volume of the vocal was really noticeable to me. If it were mine, I think I would bring up the vox and guitar on the intro to maybe 1 of 2 db below the level of the vox after the music starts and see if it isn't a little smoother transition between the 2 parts. Also, the intro vox sounds a little too dry. You don't notice it when the rest of the band kicks in, but after listening to it again it did seem too dry. I think I would put just a little touch of reverb in the intro vox to help smooth it out.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great song and it sounds fantastic. You have an excellent vocal on this and the playing is really stellar. I love the song and the way you did it.

My suggestions are minor things and have more to do with personal tastes thank anything about the way the songs done.

Thanks for sharing this one, it's going on my iPod the "The Good Stuff" section

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Glad you liked the lyrics and the sound, and I totally get what you mean about the ending. I wrestled with it a bit. Sometimes I like the fade out, and sometimes I think it's a bit of a cop out. As for the vocal at the beginning, that's also something I need to revisit in future versions, I think. I made a point of stripping down the sound so it sounded really bare (similar to my approach to the guitar at the beginning) and the contrast would be even stronger. I may have to rethink it, though, if the contrast seems too dramatic. Glad to hear this is going on the iPod - I consider it high praise. Thanks for checking this out and taking the time to make such a considered comment. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Very well done!! &mdash 08/02/08 - 12:31:03 AM
This is a fine song and it is very well written. I really dig the hook. It could be more developed vocally though. I hear some of the phrases within the verses being chorused as well, maybe the last line in every verse. The whole mix is tight and evenly spaced but the vox could be bumped a touch in the chorus it might make the arpeggiated guitar in it seem a little less on top. The eq is a touch heavy like the lower frequencies are fighting for their own space. I also hear the phrase "I'm just talking to myself" being repeated like you have at the end of it. Very clever hook and as Lennon714 said infectious pop from the first note. Great song. Yes this could be on the radio.

I'm glad you liked this, and I'm very grateful for your detailed and considered comment. I like the idea of the extra vocals on the last line of the verse - cool idea. I had also thought about adding harmonies to the chorus, so that's something else vocally I may do in the future. Interesting idea about bumping up the vocals on the chorus and offsetting the loud guitars. I may try that, and turn the guitars down at the same time and see what happens. The eq is a trickier problem for me. I'm really not good at getting that right. I'm of the 'mess around until it sounds alright' school! Hopefully, this is something I'll get better at. Thanks again for stopping by and checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the nod on the changes in the chorus. The change from D to Db (something I would not normally think of doing) came about because I wrote the song originally in the key of C, and the chorus was F to E, which comes easily on the guitar. A lot of the musical choices I make are colored by the fact that I write on the acoustic, and being a very mediocre player, I tend to stay in my comfort zone - a habit I'm trying to break! Thanks again for checking this one out. Glad you liked it. Peace.

I really appreciate your taking the time to check this one out. Glad you liked it. That's an interesting point about the vocal delivery; I have a tendency to slide into the same tempos when I write songs and I'm trying to 'force' myself to avoid that. I'm glad you feel it worked out on this one. Thanks again for stopping by. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Good lyrics, it's all there; the catchy hooks, the voice that is just perfect for the tune, and the the "can't get it out of your head" choruses, and (of course) the unique sound! Wonderfully done overall! Should be on the radio this very moment!

I love Prince. He can be erratic (who wouldn't be with that much output?), but basically I think he's a genius, and I'm immensely flattered that any kind of a hint of his style could pop up in anything I do. Thanks for that - made my day! Glad you like this one. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to listen and comment. Cheers. Peace.

Dave - sorry I'm late &mdash 08/05/08 - 04:27:50 AM
This builds into a great tune. Like Ed, that guitar tone grated on me a bit (no, Ed doesn't grate on me ..... you know what I mean), but when everything builds in the choruses it doesn't seem to matter. This is a really well written song Dave - there are parts where I'd like to hear the vocal a little higher in the mix (mainly where everything starts getting busy). I like the way you've double tracked the vocals in places. The drums sound good and everything just works.

A VERY good post. You sure are getting consistently good performances happening!

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I'm really beginning to think that I need to fix that guitar tone; I think it's just too annoying, even if it does resolve itself into something more pleasing later. In fact, I wonder if piano might be the way to go, rather than guitar? To be considered. The mix definitely has to be tweaked. I need to raise the volume of the chorus vocal, and, I think, add some harmonies. I also want to play around with the guitar solo a little bit (frankly, it hardly rates the title 'solo'). All to be added to the list! I'm glad you enjoyed the song and the performance. Thanks as always for your encouraging and thoughtful comments. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Hi David &mdash 08/07/08 - 05:16:11 PM
I tend to gravitate to acoustic sounds but this is so catchy you just can't help but get into it has it builds and forget the world for 3 and half minutes (the perfect pop song then?). I love the chord changes in the chorus. Great writing, performance and production. Better than 'The Feeling' and the other clutch of guitar pop groups on the radio these days. I don't think that's overstating things!
Has to be downloaded!
