Description:
I finally picked up a software piano. I went for the Akoustik Piano from Native Instruments, its a bit cheaper than the Ivory piano and I have had good luck with NI instruments before.
To celebrate the new instrument I recorded "Gone" using only the piano software. The upside of this is you get to hear the true bass rhythm I originally envisioned for the first time. It does not fix to normal time in GarageBand easily, but sounds very naturally rhythmic to me. Also you get to hear the wonderful resonances possible with the better piano software. The downside is there are a couple timing glitches. I guess I need to practice more :)
Let me know what you think!

Record the bass first Then overlay the rest just wondering To be honost I dont realy catch the timing issue. I like everything off time just kiddin very groovey enjoyed !
peacepiano
I often wondered if you a little off! LOL
This is left and right hand recorded simultaneously. In the first version "Gone" GregD recorded the bass first and everything else was recorded over. The second version "Long Gone" I recorded the bass first and added the other parts over. Here its just me and the piano, one take, no edits.

no probs with the timing for me, wish I could play this well. this is a great piece of music, and that new software is sounding really nice too. i can imagine this live with a couple of horns playing pads in the background. this may be my favorite piece of yours. great ending too BTW.
peacepiano
Thanks for the compliments. I wish I could sing half as well as you can :)
Horns...yeah, that would be fun, a whole little band jamming along.
Vic Holman
the piano software really sounds great!
I don't know why but this kinda of reminds of something that would fit well in a Pink Panther movie. Kato!
peacepiano
I am really enjoying the new software. So much better than the GB piano voices.
No intentional mimicry of Henry Mancini here, but I am a fan and listen to his many popular themes (Pink Panther, Peter Gunn, Baby Elephant Walk, Moon River....) all the time. Maybe some of his brilliance rubbed off :)
magnatone
wow - what an AWESOME tone you've got there. That bass tone is incredible, and this gives new meaning to the word "resonance". I look forward to hearing more of your wizardry with the Akoustik!
peacepiano
Thanks for listening. I kind of turned up the reverb a little for this solo piece. It's a very flexible instrument, the reverb and several other properties can be adjusted to fit in with an arrangement of instruments also.
Norman Goodman
Love the motifs....great sounding lines....rhythm does come off as very natural to my ears....very live sounding.
Really enjoyed the overall sound of the piece...has an ECM vibe to it.
As for the piano sound itself...exceptional. I wonder if the Akoustic moniker has any relation to the sound of Chick Coreas piano on the Akoustic Band albums....always a big an of your music,
Norm

Good to hear from you. Your rock and fusion stuff is excellent, so your word on the vibe is very appreciated. Not sure about Chick Corea, I suspect the pros use this kind of software when they don't have access to their whole set up. Concert Grands are very hard to carry around :)

You're good my friend this is very nice playing I love it.
Thanks for sharing :D
Take care

Always good the hear from you. Not as noisy as one of yours but there's a time and a place for quiet and noisy. Thanks.
musichead
This would go well with the Ricky Romance song on the same CD.
You have to remember I grew up with Jazz and blues in my house.
I loved it...
peacepiano
I should have known your roots sprang from rich earth! Thanks for stopping by.

Great piano bassline, reminds me of the "Pink Panther" somehow. very cool performance, enjoyed it :-)
peacepiano
Thanks for the listen. Maybe my sleek black cat and her near silent prowling around the house is the secret inspiration for this tune.
It's midnight, I see the entrance to a seedy back alleyway, with some "cat" leaning up against the light pole flipping a quarter looking for some trouble to get into..
Anyway, The software sounds great. Some finger snaps, an upright bass and a slow sax solo would top this off nicely, in my opinion.
Whatever you do with this, it sounds good as is.
Take care.
Chris

I like your image of the cat. Your ideas for finger snaps and other instruments sound good, so you can expect this theme to return in some form or another...

Cool , this is hard to do on the piano .
Nice bluesy mood and sound .
peacepiano
I really appreciate your comment. I hadn't thought of it that way. I always thought "the parts are pretty simple by themselves, why do I have such a hard time keeping the time!"
thoddi
This is advanced piano playing in my book. I could not manage this kind of performance. So I say Bravo:) And your new software piano sounds great.
The bass line could go very well together with a simple swinging ride cymbal to get in the groove.
peacepiano
Thanks for the comments. I will have to give some thought about where I go next with this. Right now I am checking out how the new piano sounds on some of my other ideas.
Ibstrat
commented on the wrong song by accident.THIS reminds me of Junior Mance. Great playing!
peacepiano
Ha Ha I checked the other song first, looked up Junior Mance and began scratching my head! Yes this is in his style some. I will have to get a hold of one of his CDs and hear full length versions, I really enjoyed what I heard. Thanks for the tip.

...you are suddenly in 7th heaven with your new software. The Akoustik IS a great advance in the digital piano sphere. I swing back and forth with Akoustik and Ivory. John Stebbe%u2014great jazz pianist...you know his work, right?%u2014has flip-flopped just like me on these two digital pianos. Just amazing, isn't it? what we can find today that is so "real" sounding.
I like the bass line...and the licks throughout are very satisfying. My only suggestion would be to move that bass line now and again to other keys or other intervals...and string out your melodies above this variety of harmonic texture. ... Welcome to the digital piano world. It'll inspire you no end!
Peace.

The software is great. I have only scratched the surface of what it can do. It has already inspired me to practice more.
And I have to agree that key changes are something I should try to work into a lot of my ideas.

The reverb and everything is there from a real piano. Very rich sound. If you told me it was you sitting on stage performing I would believe it. Wow. Very nice. How much did this cost you?
peacepiano
This piano is $200 and works as a plug in or stand alone. There are actually 4 pianos in the package and you can tweak things like the resonance, reverb and even whether the lid is up down or in between.
Reinholt56
I enjoyed listening to this piece very much.
The music was stimulating and the piano sound was excellent.
I look forward to more pieces from you.
Take care.

Thanks for stopping by. The new piano will be a lot of fun to work with.

just sounds wonderful. You and the software compliment each other wonderfully. Sounds just like a master playing a grand inside my head. Wouldn't it be fantastic to be able to own one of those and have a room big enough to put it in.
Cheers
Len
peacepiano
Thanks for the compliments. A real grand piano would be amazing. So what should I get first: The Room or the Piano?
lengold
I suppose, the room - otherwise the piano might get wet if it rains.
peacepiano
That makes sense, but I could get the piano faster if I don't worry about the big room :)
lengold
could build the room around it. Then you wouldn't have to worry about trying to get it through the door or window.
mowguy3
Congrats on your your new investment. No mattter how much I spent on whatever I bought I could never sound this good. Love the bassline, Love it all. Very nice.
Thanks, Russ

Glad you took the time to listen. Thanks for the compliments. You do pretty well with your guitar :)

Wonderful sound out of that Piano Bill. I didn't notice the "timing" glitches you mentions, so it must be all in your head. Besides, live performances are just that, live. Warts and all they usually still sound better and more natural than the pristine, no mistakes, studio ones precisely because they sound "Natural".
Great playing and great sound Bill, Kudos to you for this one.

Thanks for the support of my "live" piano playing. I seem to need lots of takes and practice to get that "live" sound :)

First off - sounds great! I've been looking at different software myself and am glad to get a chance to hear such a great sample of the Akoustik Piano set. This is tons of fun, lots of great movement, but it has a chillin' sort of feel to it as well. great sounds here and a great performance. And, since I am known far and wide for my total distaste for metronomes, I'm really enjoying the timing (or non-timing) in this piece. I think it all moves perfectly. Thanks!
peacepiano
Glad you liked the song and the piano tone. I have to admit that most of the time the metronome or drum loops are a big help for me. I can only pull this off with songs I play a lot over a long period of time.
ktb
tasty playing and a grand sound if I ever heard one. Lots of harmonic tonal treats with each note.
peacepiano
Good to hear from you. Always happy to provide a sonic treat if I can.
I love the Piano and this sounds really cool I love the tone also.
Peace Dee

Thanks for listening to my shiny new piano :)

Lovely piano sound, with a really nice tone, and a lovely piece. A very evocative piece. I imagine a sultry dancer. Maybe it's just me...Ahem. Nicely done. Peace.
peacepiano
Dancer eh? What were you thinking :)
Glad you like the new piano sound. I might be too busy playing to record much!
composerclark
Very nice! Interesting that it sounds to me as though when the right hand goes higher in the keyboard, it starts to sound like it's panned a bit to the right%u2026 could just be me though or my speakers. Anyway, nice bluesy piece here!
peacepiano
The software piano as well as the Clavinova pan the left hand left and right hand right. Used a preset here, but the software allows you to increase or decrease the spread and also lets you reverse the effect so you are in the listener's perspective instead of the player's.
composerclark
Very cool!

Nice groove. I think it moves very well. Great piano sound!
The pic shows a piano w/o a person. Maybe it should be a person w/o a piano!
There has been some nice blues coming out of MJ lately. This is one!

Glad you think this is a more personal and less mechanical song! The picture is from the software and is supposed to represent the piano and room where it is being played. Funny, but my keyboard and home studio don't look anything like the picture :)
