Description:
I've been a bit hesitant to put stuff up lately because the production of some of you guys and gals have floored me. (Some sound like they were recorded in a studio!)

I really try my best with GB and my crappy equipment. I hope this one makes the grade.

Most of all, I hope you can sit back and enjoy. That's what it's all about.

Dave

Lyrics:
Filling The Time

I see the lights coming down
No one else left in this town
Haven’t I been here once before?
It’s been a long time coming and the time has come before

Filling the time
State of mind

Do you see my reflection in the soft and gentle sea?
Do you see that man walking next to me?
It’s not my shadow, it’s just any face
And he’s taken all my possessions and put them in a safe

He’s filling the time
State of mind

Somebody touched a chord
Somebody that you know
Somebody crossed the line
Patterns in my soul

Filling the time
State of mind

Waking up on the side of the road
Whisky breath in my face
See the headlights flashing for 100 miles
I’ve been here for twenty days

Filling the time
State of mind

I can’t believe in the way that you come
I won’t believe in the way that you stay
I didn’t believe that phony smile
I could not believe this day

Filling the time
State of mind

Recorded in a studio! &mdash 08/03/08 - 01:25:18 PM
I know what you're talking about... And now I don't have good (My lovely one is crashed)headphones so it is so hard to listen on songs and also do music like I'm used to do...I download this as I'm sure it is good mixed.. And hopefully I get my hands on new one's soon.
I like what I hear in this crap I have to use right now BUT it's so bad bass in them and that sucks.

Take care

Solid piece of work. &mdash 08/03/08 - 02:54:12 PM
I particularly like the music. Drums, guitar and keyboards mixed together well. I think the drum line fits nicely with the music. A lot better than on many MJ songs I have listened to lately. Sounds current and original. Nice job!

Sounds like you put a lot of effort into the production here. I get kind of a big room feel on my speakers from this. Riff really keeps me hooked. Good song!

Thanks

Dave, I always love hearing your new posts. This is a terrific song, very much enjoyed. I use GB too - I think it gets a bad rap!

Bad Rap &mdash 08/04/08 - 03:45:35 AM
GB is kind of easy to use and that's what I like about it. But, the mushy sound quality is something I don't like. Often, I can ID a GB song without looking.

Thanks Karen,

Masterpiece? &mdash 08/04/08 - 03:38:44 AM
I almost decided not to put this one up. It was kind of on the bubble. It's my bubblepiece, I guess.

I agree &mdash 08/04/08 - 08:18:25 AM
with egobandit on not secong guessing yourself. Great vibe on this one. The McCartney bassline is killer. Kind of an Abbey Road sounding track. Which, obviously, is no small accomplishment.

nice wall of sound &mdash 08/04/08 - 09:08:14 AM
One one hand, I think a good song will sound good (even if in a somewhat frustrating way)whether if it's on a 1878 Edison phonograph or God's own Million-Of-Tracks Mixing Desk.if not, it will mean that the production is good and not the song. On the other hand rock music is as much (if not more) about sound and sound ideas than about melodies, so I can understand. I guess it depends on your style or the style of your songs. This sound goods to me regardless.

[ Reply to This ]
I see what you mean &mdash 08/04/08 - 09:19:23 AM
I have to agree with your comments regarding a good song should sound decent in any medium. But, I just think it could be better. But, no time, no (hobby) money and very little patience to get it right. If I were being paid, it would be a different story. Ya know?

Nice one, man &mdash 08/04/08 - 05:26:59 PM
This is a great song. I love the vocal on this; you really give it your all, great feeling and superb singing. I also really like the backing vocal, reminds me somehow of The Verve. The guitar is also outstanding, lovely sound and playing. Nice lyrics, with some really nice lines ("Waking up on the side of the road/ Whisky breath in my face" is my favorite) and really a song that resonates in the head. Any nits I have would be about the arrangement; the opening of the sound could have been a longer fade-in, or a shorter couple of bars of guitar only, and then into the song. Like I say, just my humble opinion, and nothing that detracts from the song. By the way, I think it's worth mentioning that you are one of the most consistently creative people here at MacJams, and the idea that you would even consider not posting fills me with horror! The quality of your recordings is great, first of all, and second, if production values alone were the main thing, then 'Congo' by Genesis would be a rock classic! And it's not. Ahem. Nice job, dude. Peace.

No No &mdash 08/05/08 - 10:22:21 AM
I get frustrated sometimes (OFTEN) when I do the final mix/master before I post one. This one was iffy, but it turns out to be pretty good.

That's for the words regarding the lyrics. I think lyrics generally get overlooked. Not just here, but everywhere. People seemed to like beats and pretty voices nowadays.

Anyway, thanks for comments. I will never hesitate to hesitate to post again.

production &mdash 08/05/08 - 01:27:58 AM
some of us do have studios in our homes, to varying degrees. but how's that saying go?... something about 'can't polish a turd'. so true. you have nothing to worry about in that department. solid writing and performances. (i especially like the bass playing with all the slides up to the octaves.)

and despite your concerns, this sounds like a pretty good mix. i think maybe the vocals could be a little more 'contained' with some stronger compression (to keep the loud parts quieter and make the quieter parts louder). and to beef up the whole mix, perhaps run it though a limiter like the W1 (http://www.yohng.com/w1limit.html) but only apply it after you are happy with your mix. use it to increase the overall level of your song, but try not to let it get so loud that you hear the limiter 'working'.

like i said, good song. your mix conveyed the music very well, so don't sweat it. rock on!

A million thanks &mdash 08/05/08 - 10:15:16 AM
Thanks for the tip regarding the limiter. I will look into to that. Maybe, that's what I need.

How'd you get .. &mdash 08/05/08 - 06:41:35 AM
.. McCartney to play bass on this? :)

Cool tune Dave - very Beatlesque in parts. The double tracked vocals sound great, and there's something about the drums that works really well too. I love the way this takes off into the solo section towards the end.

Production wise, I'd go for bigger, crisper drums and less "wall of sound" guitars, and so on ...... and probably stuff up the unique sound you've got here.

Keep em coming.

I know what you mean. I wanted to give it a "bigger" sound and less of that "wall of sound", you hear here. That's what I mean about the production problems.

That was actually Dirk McQuickly on bass.

Glad you like the song. It means a lot coming from you.

I know... &mdash 08/06/08 - 10:26:36 AM
...how you feel about comparing your work with others. I used to do that alot when I was studying guitar. So many players who could just bury me. Lots of stress...

Then I finally began to "get" it; that it's not so much the notes you play as where you're coming from when you play them. That's what makes the music special.

You put a lot into your music...from the writing to the performance to the production.

I'm a fan...

Cool tune, Dave. Nicely done in all areas...

I really appreciate the encouragement and support. But, I truly wish I had more time to record and to rehearse a bit more before recording. That's what I kind of mean in the description. Just my own problem, just whining a bit.

Thanks for taking the time and gla you could have a nice time.

sounds great Dave. Probably one of my favs of yours. It sounds like your studio setup is the same as mine (crappy equipment and all). I think this sounds as good as anything else out there. It all in how you master the crap.

You've got a great voice.
It reminds me a bit of Brian Wilson when he sings in a lower register.
Nothin wrong with this one my friend.
