Dedicated to my good friend, Jimmy Kennedy. Whether it's the canoe or that warp speed pro boat of yours that we're settin' in: it's all good, brother. It's all good.
I've redone this and the other 3 tunes that make up the Woodbury Suite. That's why I'm "re-posting" this little number.
A litttle piece of summer to carry with you, if you please...

...try as I might, I just haven't been able to write a sad song on this guitar. My nylon string pops 'em out like a toaster...but this guitar just won't sing in that direction.

Very cool piece, Bob. Reminds me a bit of some old ragtime tunes I've heard played on 12-string. Nice mood changes and well-played.

They first developed the reso as a lead instrument that could cut above the rhythm, before amplifiers.

think this was one of the first songs that I commented on when I joined about a year ago.You have a beautiful touch on the guitar.A lot of people would just blaze on this all the way thru, but you are using dynamics and different articulations to make it interesting.Very nice recording and great composition. ...was about 12 years ago. I liked it, but regretted adding the compression and limiter.
This time around it's minus those two elements and, to my ear, allows for a lot more dynamic range. Even the mp3 you're hearing limits the peaks. I like the sound, but it's nicer on an AIFF and/or WAV.

...... that resonator really pops right out. some pretty intense finger picking. Hot enough that you want to jump into the water.
just a side question...... since I have never played one of these. Is this guitar more orientated to finger pick style or can you actually get a good sound from playing chords? [ Reply to This ]

captured the resonator nicely. on a production sidebar, i wanted some more dynamics with the mix. not sure how to go about it without the file, but the resonator has such a loud sound, you should be able to get a concussion from the beginning notes. great, no, fantastic performance.
jimmy page meets ry cooder. well written, i love the passage at 2:15. it was zep worthy. great post, and thanks for sharing this song with the community.

...about the dynamics. It's why I redid it from the original one, which used both compression and limiter.
The mp3, itself, is a (if not THE) culprit, here. The AIFF and WAV files have more dynamic range...noticeably so, to my ear.

.. Leo Kottke. Sure sounds like more than 6 strings somehow. Bob, I've been kind of caught up in voting and commenting and have been finding it hard to get beyond the rating picks and a few others. Glad I found this in the "Fan Picks" list. Just a gentle summer song - I suspect I'd enjoy it even more if we had an extra 15 degrees on board at the moment, but at least everyone else is having summer.
A great "front porch" kind of tune - love it.

...I know what you mean. I've been trying to figure out why it sounds like more than a 6 stringer (sounds like we're talkin' firearms, here).
I figure it's about the volume/sustain from the aluminum cone combined with the fact that, using open G tuning, I like to use octaves in and out of the tune. Easy to hit those octaves in G...just form an A7 chord on any of the four bass strings.

...you can sometimes find a deal. I saw one for sale on eBay for $400.00, a couple of years ago. They are GREAT guitars, Clark. Play close to the neck and they're almost lute like (esp. without fingerpicks). And near the bridge puts you in country heaven. And they take to either slide or fingering beautifully.

Reminds me of that cascading descent from 'Prodigal Son' that Leo Kottke picked up for one of his tunes...
Quite a big sound, but you're keeping it contained...even without the compression, it doesn't sound like it's too much...
I was looking at Johnson resonator guitar at one point, but when they got a new one in it was all set up with the high action for slide... Oh well...Resonator guitars are so good for playing 'Lola'...

I saved this tune for last, when I recorded the Woodbury Suite over, again. Figured I'd be "warmed up" by then.
What I DIDN'T figure was that I'd been playing nylon string exclusively for months, previous to this. Soooo...moving over to that high action (you CAN finger it...but it ain't easy) was pretty jarring. By the time I reached this tune, I'd developed a blister on my middle finger. It made for a rolicking good time, Ed...
Show must go on, though...and I put myself into it...and I was happy with how it came out.
