Description:
A leviathan in D.
Lyrics:
times are hard, you know it seemsthere are many locked inside their dreams
I've been there but now I'm here
And here is something that we all can share
I hope you come along
we who have no faith in man
can we learn to understand and stop fighting
when our politics are so refined
they kill the heart that is not blind or lying
challenge us the truth is in our eyes
give your cause for doubt
he'll change your mind
what he gives only he is able
teach us to follow
and lead us on 'cause we're all known by name
to this heart
take a breath take your time
see the ruby in a drop of wine
be of good faith he knows your tears
god is love
there is no need to fear

What a wonderful song! Your guitar work in here is really impressive, light, moving. Terrific vocals and cool sounds thrown in for effect. A toe tapper - excellent!

between the Grateful Dead and CSNY. Really beautiful sounding production. Sweet Harmonies and thoughtful lyrics. Really nice work. Enjoyed.

I'm so glad you've enjoyed this tune and have taken the time to listen and comment, and encourage. It really means a lot to me.
Thank you!!!

Very well done song! Beautiful guitar work (may be the best I've heard from you). You're such a strong singer, but it seems to me the vocals are a little buried. I'd probably bring them up (at least the lead) a couple of db. Other than that, bravo!
pablatone
I always have this internal struggle with the vocal levels, I don't like them to seem like they are pasted onto the song, and sometimes when they are up it sounds like that to me. But I'll see what I can do, maybe ducking may be the answer, I've never tried that but I noticed that Logic Pro has that feature.
jiguma
Very impressive on a number of counts - firstly, the sound is generally really good - great, strong mix with lots of good placement. A cool song, well played and sung. Uncanny resemblance to James Taylor in places (and you sing like him too lol!).
If I was to suggest an area for improvement (and I do so with some hesitation), it would perhaps be that the mix could use some more air - it would probably sound better if everything didn't sound pushed so much. Hard to explain, but maybe what I mean to say is that less compression would be better.
Nevertheless, this is a really good post.

.. the metronome and some hiss/hum in the playout - maybe that needs a tweak?

I think you're right on about the compression, I have another mix with out so much and I kinda flipped a coin as to which one I posted. I think that hiss is coming from the bass track which is a sample, I have yet to figure out why it's doing that. Probably compression. :>)
I think I'd like to record the rhythm guitar parts in a larger room as well, and that should take care of the metronome sound. But, as usual, I got excited and just had to share!

No disrespect meant with the small "g" just hurrying through the lyrics.

this is terrific... I'm always getting CSNY compares... I will now pass this to you.. there is a vibe that consistently props this up and carries all through this... sweet... I love how the lyric teeters on the etherial... "see the ruby in a drop"... deep bow to you.. brilliant stuff...
sincerely Scott

I've never been able to hide my roots, so why not just flaunt them? Thank you for givin' the song a listen.

A few of the previous comments address the problems I hear, which are the compression, and the sort of buried vocals. But it sounds pretty good, a little busy perhaps, with a lot of Logic Pro toys being used throughout, top to bottom. Another mix might be more pared down and the song would probably stand up on it's own pretty well. But I've got no complaints. I think the hum at the end must be the mic, as it sounds like you left the guitar mic up in the mix in the fadeout (as evidenced by what sounds like what I've experienced as a shirt-button-or-belt-hitting-the-back-of-the-acoustic-guitar-when-leaning-over-to-press-the-button-to-stop-recording sound that occurs at the very end of the song); it's not likely a software instrument bass causing that sound even if there's a lot of compression on it. Bringing down the guitar's mic track on the fade might just take care of that. It's nice to have the room sound in there, but it sounds like you might be getting a bit of hum from the computer as well that's more obvious when the rest of the instruments fade out. It's one of those things that would drive me crazy in mixing until I isolated it and fixed it, but I can understand your enthusiasm; it's a great song and I'm glad you're sharing it as it is!

I really appreciate you taking the time for this. I'll have some time this weekend to work on it some more. I'll have fresh ears for it as well. I may take my rig to the church and record in the sancuary, it's a nice sounding room and I can set up some room mic's as well as get further away from the cpu.

Wonderful, "up" tune, played with breathless enthusiasm. Nice acoustic instrument mix and arrangement.
Pleasant vocal and good harmony work. Some nice guitar licks, too.
Well done. ;)

thanks J.A., I'm glad you liked it.

Fanatastic track. Clearly a lot of work has gone into it. A really full sound. Some mixing issues. It's a good idea to have an impartial listener aid with the final mixdown. well i guess that's what this is for. If anything it's only very minor. Easy favourite for me. Cheers!!!

yep, i see a remix in my future. :-p

those are all mic'd. I have a cheap chinese condenser and a B-2 that I use to record them with. pretty close mic'd 12" at the bridge and 12th fret. The rythm guitar is double tracked, and I used different gauged picks for the tracks.
Skatehorn
but just to add my tuppenceworth - I though this was fantatsic, brilliant use of instruments. My favourite part was actually the outro
Great stuff
