Hard (73)disturbed (6)frantic (2)don't you hate this bit? (1)
Description:
A song post on my birthday.

I apologise profusely for being absent much of the summer but I will be catching up on recent songs very soon.

The lyrics for this were written by Graham Hodges, a friend of mine, and I see it as a lost song from Amokopera. Imagine a dream sequence with extreme violence. I have no idea where the music came from but it was a dark period.

It's not easy listening and my wife hates it.

Lyrics:

Urban Warfare : copyright 2008 Graham Hodges / Dick Langford

It's not personal
I don't hate you
It's the way of the system
It's the thing to do

Gotta have more money
So you'll see my worth
Just look at what I show you
Not the reality or birth
Standing there and I shoot 'em up
Piss on my patch and I shoot 'em up
Drinking my beer and I shoot 'em up
Not going to stab em I shoot 'em up

I don't like you any more shoot 'em up
You don't know the score shoot 'em up
You're taking the piss shoot 'em up
And I've had it up to here shoot 'em up

You're not paying attention
Gotta have more fame
You are so not listening
It's how you play the game

If I do it this way
It commands respect
And you will make me famous
Remember they're you rules
Standing there and I shoot 'em up
Piss on my patch and I shoot 'em up
Drinking my beer and I shoot 'em up
Not going to stab em I shoot 'em up

I don't like you any more shoot 'em up
You don't know the score shoot 'em up
You're taking the piss shoot 'em up
And I've had it up to here shoot 'em up

You'll hate what you're doing
You will all hate the result
But you won't have power to stop it
You're such a dozy get

Ok there's some victims
“He's guilty,” you will scream
Who will tame the monster
Make us safe from this extreme

It was an easy listen for me ... &mdash 08/30/08 - 01:58:33 PM
I hope that doesn't mean I need therapy. Mean and hard driving, great guitar playing, and cool effects on the voice.

Someone likes it! &mdash 08/31/08 - 03:22:01 AM
Thanks, it was a blast doing it even though it took 3 months ;-)

uh.... Happy Birthday? &mdash 08/30/08 - 04:24:04 PM
quite some thrash from you, 'dude'. Even had my head nodding (or is that bobbing)

Ord'nary bloke? Raht....

Good rocker. It must have been a piece of work to shift the vox down clean like that. I can say, I was feeling relief when the rock scramble kicked in and the vox pitched back up - heh....

Guess the age &mdash 08/31/08 - 03:26:36 AM
Thanks, the voices were done "live" with the "Vocal Transformer" effect on. It's weird but because of the delay in GB processing the sound you instinctively slow down and "drag" the words.

It was supposed to match some slo-mo extreme violence.

Cheers

did you ever hear &mdash 08/30/08 - 05:47:30 PM
The Screaming Blue Messiahs ? cos this sounds a bit like them in parts. They made a great album called Bikini Red which has some good songs on it.

Back to your music, I think the song is really good and well put together but like the SBM's music it takes a few plays to get you there, though there's nothing wrong with that. Like the guitar as well.

haven't heard that name for a few years!

I'll have to revisit them as I can't remember any of their stuff at all.

Thanks for the comments and thanks for listening.

jeez Dick &mdash 08/30/08 - 10:44:39 PM
for a guy who just became a year older you sure still have a lot of punk attitude in you... way to be.
sure takes some cool twists. the orchestra piece and going back to the theme was a real cool trip.

I decided long ago that I didn't want to grow up. Immature forever. Somehow I've managed it to a certain extent (despite 2 wives, one daughter, 4 step kids, a job with a bank and two mortgages) Psychedelia and punk (even though they were 10 years apart) were both instrumental in my musical education (80s synth pop less so :-) ) and so naturally find their way into what I do now.

I hear much the same influences in your music if I'm not mistaken but then again we are around the same age...

Many thanks for your support and your ears.

A gentle pastorale it isn't &mdash 08/31/08 - 12:20:58 AM
Rocks along nicely - no subliminal messages here then :) I can here a pop/punk version with girlie chorus doing the "shoot em up" line. Maybe a 2009 Eurovision number for the UK (couldn't do any worse than in recent years).

Like it - "I'm just an ordinary bloke" - love it!

Thanks Neil, I look forward to jamming in person next year.

not too bad for a coffin dodger...the vocal effects sounded like fun to play around with. Your influences would be proud of you. Keep at it! Nice one. :-)

Ouch! &mdash 08/31/08 - 09:59:37 AM
My head hurts...but that's kind of the point, I think. Wow. THIS number is so complex in its production. How do you DO all of that? and how do you keep all that in your head and so well-organized? We should make ourselves a challenge: you write a sweet ballad and I'll write...uh, I think you'd win. You are one versatile composer, Dick. Amazing.
Peace.

The inside of my head is reflected by what the inside of my studio looks like. It's not a pretty place to be :-)

Thanks for the positive vibes. Always welcome from a such a good musician as yourself.

And no it wasn't intended to be fun...

great to me Dick. I'll have to be careful not to drink your beer by mistake.
I can actually imagine this on stage. Like a robotic mob and the lead singer.
Wonderfully creative.

you have to worry about. It's Graham as he wrote the lyrics. Just don't step on my blue suede shoes :)

Thanks for listening Len. Beer soon?

hmmm &mdash 09/03/08 - 10:47:36 AM
Some good licks in this tune... but they are a bit overshadowed by the downtuned vocals... a bit gimmicky.

Interesting changes around 3:30.

Like the writing in terms of the music but I feel like this could be much more powerful with a tighter, more sculpted guitar sound.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks &mdash 09/05/08 - 04:42:35 PM
Normally I'd agree with you that the voices are gimmicky and the guitar could be a more defined sound but the song is supposed to reflect a dream sequence filmed in slow motion. Extreme violence is involved and this is to be raw and nasty. The voices were an attempt to get that unreal dream feeling and to complement the slo-mo action.

I appreciate the thoughtful comments, they're great to get :-)

Cheers

Dick

This lingers... &mdash 09/04/08 - 05:23:55 PM
...which is why any sane person listens to music, it get s inside. Although it lingers in a very dark part of me, I do appreciate the skill it takes to get it there in the first place. Won't even pretend to be savvy enough to critique the guitar, all I know is that it rocked! Your loving production shows much humor and detail - brava!

Another &mdash 09/05/08 - 04:46:53 PM
detailed listen. Thanks Mr B. This wasn't intended to be easy listening and I'm a little surprised that people even like it.

The lyrics came from a dark place as did the music and it was fun and painful putting it together.

I'm pleased you've taken something from it.

Cheers

Much more &mdash 09/17/08 - 04:54:58 AM

punk to me too than anything else with the energy, guitar and vocals. That aside: great riffs and very interesting arrangement .. the arrangement and lyrics itself wins it for me and I guess the arranging took most of the time...so it paid off- although I really like the manic lead guitar bits too, effected to sound kinda electronic circuitry like.

Mixwise: I wasn't so keen on the choice of reverb for the main vocal (most noticeable at the very last line)... I thought that could be improved to enhance more.

The cookie monster effect is used well herein .. if sometimes hard to make out what is said without reading the lyrics... sometimes made me think of 'Jabba the Hut' from Star Wars at times ..lol.

All in all I really enjoyed this. Good 'un Dick.
