Description:
A re-recorded, re-produced, re-mastered version of the original 'Carry Me' song. I recorded this one tight (this time to a click). I'm treating this as a second draft as oppose to the finished thing, so any critique and advice is much appreciated, (This one is going in the university portfolio, so i need to make it PERFECT!!
I also tried to take heed of a few suggestions that were made regarding the old version, so i hope the difference shows!!
Thanks again for all the fantastic support shown by everyone here at Macjams, i freakin' love this place!

About the song:
Basically it's about how scary i find the speed of change. It seems like yesterday i was a small child that would fall asleep in a restaurant and have to be carried from the car to bed by my dad. The other day i found myself doing exactly the same to my 4 year old nephew, and It really shocked me to think - i'm no longer this care free boy - i have 'responsibilities' now - (whatever THEY are)

Lyrics:
do you think they see what i see?
is it all so black and white?
it's all changing right in front of me,
it's all changing overnight

do you think they want what i want?
homes are places we should know,
It's all changing, we can never be part
of these places, of these places we have grown

You will carry me
You will carry me
I will carry you
You will carry me

It's hilarious to think there's anything I can critique about this song. This is a fantastic version that really soars in the chorus. It reminds me of good Coldplay, which is know is one of your favs. Coldplay can be yucky (Clocks) or delicious (Fix You), but that's just my opinion. This is yummy. Great job!

hahaha! &mdash 09/01/08 - 09:39:08 AM
thanks dude!! I actually completely agree with you on coldplay, clocks is my least favorite song by them. I'm really glad you liked it!

Oh my God... That chorus is simply flat out gorgeous!

Beautiful work... Simply gorgeous... The vocals so perfect.. I really like this all around but that chorus just jumps out and takes you!

Beautiful job!

Thanks Mark.. &mdash 09/01/08 - 10:55:02 AM
i'm really pleased you like it. I tried to keep the verses as bare and simple as possible (without being tooooo boring hopefully) so as to really exaggerate the chorus. I'm real pleased you thought it worked, cos it was quite a challenge.
thanks!

I would have been blown away. But you came highly recommended. So, I knew this would be special, and yes, it is. Bravo! Thanks.

Your stuff is great &mdash 09/01/08 - 03:06:25 AM
To me, the first version had a more intimate feel in the beginning , which I very much like. But its all subjective... Any portfolio with a couple tunes like this will do the trick. I'm certain of that.

i agree.. &mdash 09/01/08 - 03:47:06 PM
i too thought that the verses in the original were better. I'm still finding it really difficult to pull away from that 'clean' classical sound, and produce a more 'rock ready vocal. I'm hoping it's a matter of practice and patience!! But i'm glad you noticed because its given me direction for the final version!
thanks for the comment!!

i'm still struggling with the whole songwriting thing, but i feel with each new attempt, i get ever so slightly better than the song before. Still along way to go yet though!!
Thanks for the comment:)

Great...A few thoughts &mdash 09/01/08 - 08:02:50 AM
I think this is a great song. I think you need to add a build up when you get to the second verse, similar to what you did with some of your other songs. Also, I would like to hear a bridge of some sort which then ties back into the chorus. Your playing is great and voice is tremedous. I simply would have liked to hear more of a build up. Good Luck.

WEIIIRD!!! &mdash 09/01/08 - 03:58:41 PM
I've been working on a bridge alll day and then i read you comment - how strange is that!? Obviously then, i completely agree. I'm also working on a something with 12parsecs regarding a drum part (he's pretty amazing at drums, and, well, i'm not) so hopefully on the final cut it will include BOTH a bridge section and a heavier build at the end.
Thanks for the encouraging words and the sound advice (no pun intended)
:)

Outstanding!!! &mdash 09/01/08 - 04:14:50 PM
I would suggest paying close attention to what Remark80 suggested, as I concur. The only thing I would add, is to check the piano eq it sounds a little thin to my ears, like it could use a bump around 80 to 150Hz to add some warmth. It has a distinct sound (very very very slightly out of tune, flat I think) that adds real charm to the over all piece. It and the (acoustic guitar more so) sound a little low in the mix in relation to your vox and the synth. They both pretty much get lost in the chorus and the during the verses the acoustic would be a really nice contrast to the piano. This is a song with huge potential, you should be very proud. You have the vocal and synth dialed in perfectly, with the acoustic and piano dialed in, and with attention to what Remark80 is saying, this would get regular rotation on any radio station easily. You may have a hit song with this.

hmm.. &mdash 09/12/08 - 04:43:20 PM
i'll be sure to check the piano eq, i think the problem i find is that things sound much warmer and 'fuller' when I'm playing them in garageband, but not so much when i've compressed them to itunes (plus I'm still learning about eq'ing and compression) so i tend not to fiddle with those too much at the moment. Advice on Hz rates etc it gratefully received by me because otherwise i'd have no idea, so thank you. like i mentioned in remark's comment, i am working on a bridge and drum section at the moment so hopefully the final edit will include both of these as i agree, it does need to 'go' somewhere.
Thanks for your helpful advice.
Mz

Good one Mac &mdash 09/06/08 - 11:02:13 AM
this is very good. You have a great voice, I look forward to hearing more of your tunes, I've never heard coldplay but I know they're popular so if folks are comparing you to them, that's gotta be a good thing.

Again &mdash 09/07/08 - 06:51:54 AM
This is one of the best I have ever heard on this site.

Saw your set up at your home page. I'm jealous.

The vocals are just so terrific.

Are you trying to get a deal?

Michael &mdash 09/07/08 - 07:32:36 AM
It sounds like you fixed the things that I noticed in the previous version. This sure is a very good song, and your production and performance are getting close to faultless. I think there's still a little room for some fine tuning though - along the lines of the comments by Remark and Guy.

To me, the piano was pretty right - as opposed to "righ .. igh .. igh" :) - in the mix, but the acoustic tracks seemed way too low. This was very noticeable in the first section, but probably an area for some re-thinking throughout.

The vocal, while being amazing, causes a little concern the way the reverb holds a note while you move to another ("You will carry me" at 3:04 and 3:19 for example). I'm not really sure if this is a problem, just pointing it out so you can maybe tweak it a little. I think the acoustics being so far back is a problem though, and one that may get noticed i your portfolio.

Having said that, this really is an incredible piece of work - my nits are only suggestions which might help.

Great post,
Neil

Brilliant &mdash 09/07/08 - 07:40:00 AM
When you re-submitted this song I was suprised because I didn't think there was anything wrong with the first version.
I guess there's been a bit of tweaking and it does sound a fair bit better but it was brilliant before.
Never mind handing this in as part of your portfolio..send it off to record companies and get it released.
It really is THAT good !!

Yup &mdash 09/07/08 - 07:59:20 AM
This is swell! I agree with Neil: boost that acoustic a bit.

And put it in the portfolio by all means. And also send it around: the money it could generate will only improve your university experience......!

AWESOME SONG &mdash 09/07/08 - 08:04:49 AM
This is one of those songs that I will not be able to get out of my head. I love it. You are so very talented. Your voice is perfect here and the song is a sure hit with anyone that has any sense at all!!! WOW! I also love the story behind it. It reminded me of when I was a little girl and "faked" being asleep, just so my Dad would pick me up and carry me off to tuck me in....what sweet peace this song brings. Excellent song!!!

Fabulous &mdash 09/07/08 - 01:32:32 PM
.. been following your uploads and a fan since "soup of the day". This doesn't disappoint. Very polished and a very 'good' Coldplay song vibe...perhaps a little Supertramp "breakfast in america" too .. with the piano and vocal delivery at the start. Instrumentation is put together very well, subtle acoustic usage.. the build is sweet (that hit with the bass and little FX wash) but it's the vocals just hit this out of the park: what a great voice u got there.

I felt it at one of the refrains it could use some drums .. making it build to stage 3 .. before dropping back down.

I get some weird thing in the stereo field .. correct me if I'm wrong but one acoustic guitar in L sound mored L panned than the acoustic in the R .. (noticeable more at the outro)... might just be my ears needing cleaning :o)

change a thing! it is a perfect journey. i think you could make another version that soars more with drums and strings, could be an interesting experiment. But as far as this goes, keep it the way it is your uni will love it.

This is excellent quality. You must feel great after creating something this good.
I think this is something pretty special and I have a feeling it's gonna get better. The though of a version with a bridge and drums..... Hmmmm my pinter is hovering over the song review box ready to dish out some 10's!!!
