Description:
Thanks to the magnanimous and most talented DJ French Toast for allowing me to cover one of his all time greatest hits. I took some liberties editing his lyrics - but they appear in their entirety below.
Check out the original here: http://www.macjams.com/song/35874

Great challenge project Michael2.

Recorded before trip to Burning Man - image above is of the Temple Friday evening.

Lyrics:
Grey matters Im just another brick in the wall
you built me up with mental mortar just to watch me fall
crumble and tumble look at the daminos cascade
and your lookin at me sour like a glass of lemonaid
soft and mellow I entered your world as a bed fellow
watch this moment its creation like a yellow marshmellow
its ok to get involved in my imagination
but I guess your feelin trapped like a southern plantation
youve tossed around the word love but I dont know how to react
my feelins intertwined watch them creep up from the back
despite my brain my heart tells you the same
this moment got me wrapped up think im goin insane
you throw your arms around me like a giant puzzle peice
then the world fades around you and I feel no grief
hand in hand we walk together sharin lifes subdleties
forget about the planet right now its just you and me

Chorus
listen up little birdie if you need to fly then fly im nottryin to clip your wings fly high up in the sky
when you look me in the eye with love and then you sigh birdies need to fly then thats when I realized this moment is this moment and the past is now the past forget about the future lets make right now last birdies need to fly and they fly away fast forget about the future lets make right now last

mentally un prepared for the moments not shared
sitting cross legged got the million mile stare
meditate on the past and each second that weve spent
all the time that weve laughed and all the times that weve kissed
i ceased to exsist pure energy Ive become
drift into the vast as my body goes numb
walking dead just a zombie shallow shell of a man
my heart grows cold as I loose the warmth of your hand
words betray people stray relationships decay
like an old pair of jeans with the bottoma all frayed
how do you know its ok to let go
to take the next steps to let this love seed grow
when do you realize the word love is all just lies
I knew it in the moment when you looked into my eyes
time to let go now and say my goodbyes
I hope the wind blows softly as you head into the skies

Oh Dude : ) &mdash 09/02/08 - 09:27:47 PM
This is really cool man , Its odd because this is the first time someone has ever covered one of my songs ...and I guess its a weird combination of honor and Amazement . It seems to bring a whole new light shinning on the poem , as if you took over its soul like a possession and made it your own . You really put a soul into the word that were just "Rapped" by me but you put feeling into them and somehow made them more meaningful . Very odd really , I like new feelings : ) I love the trip you go on with the music . What was It I said ...its like a lounge lizard version : ) Bud Im truly Honored man ! Thanx

i can almost..... &mdash 09/02/08 - 09:55:25 PM
.. picture you wearing a tuxedo while doing the vocals.
I like how the music shifts throughout. To me, the section almost half way with the tweeter birds really stuck in my head the most.

excellent work Kevin, I was thinking of ya the last couple days, wondering how you have been doing.

you &mdash 09/02/08 - 11:30:45 PM
are a genius (so is Vic for that tuxedo comment). I'll get more in depth under my real pseudo-identity. awesome.

I love this song &mdash 09/03/08 - 01:05:35 AM
Very brave of you to take on this great song. I must say that it worked extremely well and you have made it very much your own.
Beautiful mood you created and I love the soulful cello. Really enjoyed this.
Cheers
Len

Outstanding &mdash 09/03/08 - 03:48:26 PM
This is amazing. I would never even think of this approach - a truly original take on the track. Your vocal on this is very cool - soulful and true, filled with the power of the words. Hints of Ian Curtis in the delivery (which is a good thing, in my opinion). Love the use of strings; they add a lovely touch. A magnificent achievement. Nicely done, FT, on a great song, and well done, Bud, on your version of it. Kudos. Peace.

Very soft, cool interpretation Bud &mdash 09/03/08 - 06:32:23 PM
For me, this was easier to listen to and understand than the original because you slowed it down and made a love song out of it. That last statement might have something to do with my age and the fact I'm starting to slow down now.

I love what you did in the back track my friend. They fit the feel of you vocal perfectly. Very well done in all respects Bud, this one going to the iPod, thanks a lot for the great track.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Excellent &mdash 09/04/08 - 04:25:00 AM
I like the middle section especially. And the judicious use of cello. Nice!

Pardon me - &mdash 09/04/08 - 05:48:17 PM
for not answering each comment individually. I appreciate all the kind words and love that I was able to bring a new life to Benny's great song. Be sure to check out the original if you haven't already.
I came back from Burning Man and went straight to work - and I feel like I'm on another planet. I keep dreaming of the playa - and don't know where I am when I wake up. That festival is strong medicine. I hope to get back to something like a normal MJ presence soon - I have so much catching up to do. Having said that - Sunday I'm flying to London for a one day shoot and the next day to Atlanta for a one day shoot. Not too normal.
Love you all - thanks for stopping by.

Bud - this just superb! &mdash 09/06/08 - 06:11:24 AM
I checked out DJFT's original and as much as I like it (and I do), this is what I deem to be a cover that is also a new song altogether. Lyrics may be the same but you have created a whole new entity with the great choice of sounds (that low cello is a beast!) and your vocal delivery is sublime.

Len mentioned Ian Curtis and I agree, but with your music then it's not Joy Divisionesque. You must have really connected with Ben's words(which are immense) to have produced what I think is one of the supreme entries in this fantastic challenge (and I thought CBGBs was good - this is just as good!).

You must have got a real buzz out of the Burning Man trip and if its influence helps you to do work of this standard, I say bring it on!!

Take care; Paisley says Hi!

Jim

in my mind, you are wearing a tux like Vic suggested, and it's only you and some other guy named clawhammer on stage. since all of your music is played back via an old skool reel to reel, no one is really sure what the clawhammer does. your huge on the underground art scene and rumors are flying that 1 or both of you are actually in the Residents, but there is no way to verify this. sadly, you guys break up after clawhammer gets married and moves to Boise to work for his wifes father.

I am thinking... &mdash 09/06/08 - 03:06:04 PM
..."fit for the stage." There's a great story in the lyrics and your orchestration and delivery just strike me as a kind of soliloquy on an empty stage within the confines of a pool of light...I absolutely love the violins that accompany most of the vocal. They are haunting. And I have no idea why a bongo drum works on this, but it does. Amazing arrangement, Kevin. Wow. This is so much different from your jam sessions. Love it.
Peace.
Paul

with french toast.. a change up completely great choice of sound for this. I can tell the singing was not easy to do in some parts you seem to be thinking of how to fit the words, but fit them you do I enjoyed this thanks!
