Description:
THE RAINY DAY
by: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882)

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains, and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering Past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart! and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

uncomplicated... yet ebullient! Love the delayed piano underneath... and the exquisite harmonies that have become your trademark!

In approaching the vocals for this song, that's the idea I had--that I would use my voice as if it were an instrument, using open vowels and intonations of sound rather than words.

As a singer, sometimes the lack of words gives me more freedom to use tone, texture and shape in ways I would not be able to otherwise.
Thanks, again, for your comments :)

Well Now .... &mdash 09/05/08 - 10:50:21 PM
.. of course ... this is beautiful .... LOVELY vox as usual ..... would you consider a re-mix as well where you sing the poetic words over the sound bed ... would ALSO sound FABULOUS I think ......

I did consider using lyrics for this song--but only for about 30 seconds, haha.
I wanted the sound of the voice to wash alongside the waves of synth, and to ebb and flow in a soothing kind of way.

Thanks for the listen and the comments :)

beauty &mdash 09/06/08 - 09:23:09 AM
in the way you weave all the elements. We're just getting the tail end of some storms generated by errant hurricanes and its been dreadful lately. Now I awake to see a peek of sky and get this sonic treat as I sip my java. A little re-immergent soundtrack. Nicely done

wonderfully serene and delicate. perfect morning song for me, as I sit thoughtful and dreamy, waking up to the day. i love the echoey piano in this - perfectly sets the mood. this gives me the feeling of floating above the rain, watching it fall to earth - an unusual perspective, very lovely.

It's funny about this Cat &mdash 09/06/08 - 12:51:01 PM
Rainy days have always been my personal favorite kind of day. this beautiful work reflects that soothing feeling I get on those days when it rains. I don't find this sad, rather I find it uplifting and peaceful.

This is so gorgeous my friend I can't tell you how good it is. The music bed lays there and you put this sublime vocal harmony onto it like the diamond atop the tiara to bring the focal point up to the pinnacle of the music.

Very well done Cat, Kudos to you

Ed

Rainy days... &mdash 09/07/08 - 12:12:34 AM
...are also a favorite of mine, but rain is rare in this desert-mountain state! I love to go walking in the rain. I find it cleansing, and inspiring to my creativity.

I'm glad you find the peacefulness in this song. Even though it has a somber mood, I wanted the vocals to ultimately be soothing, with moments where they lean towards a lament, but never quite get there, with the accent chorus keeping things hopeful and 'brighter.'

Thank you for listening and for taking a moment to share your thoughts on this song here :)

No words &mdash 09/06/08 - 05:15:03 PM
No words can truly express how amazing your voice sounds, so suffice it to say, it sounds great! The echoing piano works very well, I think, and the whole piece has a wonderful ethereal mood. The poem is great, and the music is a perfect match. Love the nod to your Dad for the love of poetry. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Ya know... &mdash 09/08/08 - 08:24:04 PM
...it is at this point a commonplace to say that you've got a beautiful voice, but I've got OLD Cat stuff kickin' around here someplace, and I'm aware that, although you came to the party with natural gifts and training, your singing, your composing and improvising FOR your singing, and your clearer, fuller and more present recording OF your singing has gotten stronger over the years...

I thought the thunder was a little pitchy there for a sec...

Since I collect music and poems that have to do with rain, which I love, I have to thank you for this one even as I tuck it into my MacJams playlists and quietly cut and paste the Wordsworth into a handy document file....
