Description:
I have been trying to learn the Tuva (outer Mongolia) style of Throat Singing ..... there is an interesting web site which describes the many different "styles" of Tuvan Throat Singing (http://www.khoomei.com/types.htm) .... I heard Didge-Ache's "Call to Prayer" originally posted April 16, 2006 - www.macjams.com/song/20024 - and thought to myself .. hmmm what a fabulous tune to try my Tuvan Throat Singing attempts over ... I think the style that I am attempting here is called Sygyt - where a "flute like" high harmonic sound is emitted while droning (similar to a bagpipe) .... it's all in the position of the tongue (try not to get too excited now guys) ..... I have added a tiny little track at the end to show the sound as it comes out of my mouth ... but I got a little "Befuddled" while trying to record it .. but I think you get the idea of what I am doing and what I added to this tune ... (in addition to one other little "chanting" vocal track) ... I hope you enjoy the experience nonetheless (even tho my Tuvan Throat Singing still needs some serious practice) !

Just some Chanting and Tuvan Throat Singing

Well to be honest Luna ..... &mdash 09/12/08 - 09:10:55 PM
I had no hand in the original production of Didge's tune ... I merely did a little add on of lyric tracks onto the MP3 and tried to "blend" them as best as I could (knowing they were perched on top of the MP3) .. .thanks for the listen and the comment.

Interesting and strange -- world music can take getting used to. It's both beautiful and unsettling. Thank you for the introduction.

Alannah, wow. This was a great piece to start with, but what you've added here is spectacular. Just makes this piece so full and interesting. Totally put me into another state of mind. And I'm so impressed by what you've been able to accomplish with the Tuvan Throat singing! Very very cool. Thanks for this - definitely a download for the "Meditation" playlist on my iPod.

I just had to come back and say...I've been listening to this all day and it absolutely just takes my breath away. Just so incredibly beautiful, Alannah. I hope you do more as you improve your Tuvan Throat Singing skills.

So glad to have you back .... &mdash 09/12/08 - 09:35:16 PM
... yes I am continuing to practice my Tuvan Throat Singing .. but am still having trouble "harnessing" that high harmonic part ... sort of like a child who learns to whistle for the first part .. the tweet comes out .. but trying to control it and make it sound like a planned tune is still a challenge ... I am working on it tho cause Didge-Ache asked me to record some dry tracks of it that he wants to use on some future tunes ... would sound better if I could control the highs and form them into something that sounds somewhat cohesive .. rather than the train whistle sound .. hahaha thanks for your support!

Sound &mdash 09/07/08 - 07:40:57 AM
Very different. I looked for some mongolian landscape pictures to really get in the mood. I like the way this takes its time and speaks to you. The dynamics, the timbre of the voices, all very expressive without using our conventions of rhythm and melody, cool.

Thanks
Bill

yes well .... &mdash 09/12/08 - 09:38:17 PM
.. there "might" actually have been some "conventions of rhythm and melody" if I had practiced working on controlling that high harmonic more before I hit the "record" button .. hahahaha still working on it ... but yes ... the whole sound of meditative music does seem to take on a life of its own which is quite different from todays modern music .... (and yesterdays music too for that matter) ... thanks for the listen and comment !

.. I love "World Music" ... and have been listening to the Tuva Singers for about 5 years now .. never thought I would EVER see the day where I would actually attempt to make that sound myself (I think I read somewhere that Women are actually forbidden from making that sound in Tuva - and it is believed that if they do ... they are possessed by the Devil or something like that ) .... oops my bad ! hahahaha Thanks for the listen and the comment.

... of ALL the songs to place as a First Listen ... cause this was certainly a FIRST for me ..... honestly (well ok I have been known to do this sort of thing in the car and the shower ... but ....) ... glad you stopped by and enjoyed the style !

excellent &mdash 10/05/08 - 08:11:01 AM
And your singing does melt in perfectly with Didge's didge sounds. Very nicely sung and mixed... although maybe almost too well... I think you need to do this again, but showcase your vox a little more!

Too bad Richard Feinman never made it to Tuva, he would have tried singing that way too.

Drakonis
