Description:
The first 9 seconds of this were recorded as I stood in Greenwich Street in May 2008, watching a small brass ensemble walking past. I kept it as I thought I could use it somewhere, sometime. I came across it the other day and it got me thinking about how much I enjoy just hanging around NYC, doing, well, nothing and everything.

The photo is just an ordinary scene I captured in Grand Central Terminal and again, it's about nothing or everything - the couple appear to have their own story.

The overall sound is an attempt at something and nothing to try and describe what it sounds like, feels like just chilling and having a mellow day in the most vibrant city on the planet. I think it's the ying & yang of the city I enjoy the most...I enjoy doing nothing and taking it all in or being right in amongst it all, especially with friends.

Hope you get it.

Jim

Sweet &mdash 09/06/08 - 11:41:38 AM
I love that you love New York, it has always had that edge of time feeling for me, last days of Rome etc...
this song somehow captures the fast paced city and the relaxing reflections one may experience as an observer.
Cool indeed!

I'm addicted to New York! &mdash 09/06/08 - 12:43:23 PM
I have a few recordings from around the city taken over my last 4 visits. I plan to go thru each one to see what feelings they evoke and put some music around these in whatever way inspires.

If my ship comes in - NYC would be where I land.

More to come on the same theme.

Glad you like it - means a lot from coming from you, Tom.

Thanks all! &mdash 09/06/08 - 09:59:50 PM
To be honest, all I'm doing is getting back in the zone after some time out. These soundscape ventures are just to fill the time between 'real' songs. So I guess I must be limbering up for something. I have collected some ad hoc NYC recordings that I think could be useful, so in my quieter moments, I'll continue to put short instrumental items together.

I need to find my lyric mojo, tho'...

I would have thought &mdash 09/07/08 - 11:09:24 AM
New York to be a little more busy than this, but it also works nicely as the soundtrack for a sunny weekend in Stockholm ;-) I enjoyed it a lot and I'm looking forward to more of the same kind. So - no hurry on my account, dear lyric mojo... lol

Stay well!

Nice piece &mdash 09/08/08 - 03:28:04 PM
You make NYC sound like a cool, zen place, though you can hear the traffic pulsing through the window.

That's the thing I dig the most &mdash 09/08/08 - 05:15:20 PM
NYC is whatever you want. I can sit and people watch for days or go nuts bonkers for days with the rush. Calm is there, but so is wild. You just decide which bit you prefer on any given day.

That said, I don't live there so it would have to be different if I did.

The tune is me getting up and hitting a diner for eggs & bacon, coffee & OJ.

I wonder where I'll end up today?

Very cool &mdash 09/08/08 - 05:16:20 PM
This is great. I love the beat, and the piano on this is sweet. The haunting arpeggio gives the piece a nice ethereal feel, but that insistent bassline holds it all down. Some nice keyboard sounds on those chords from around 2:20 onwards - kind of remind me of that lovely sound from Your Silent Face, the old New Order song. A great piece. Very evocative, and terrific arrangement. Nicely done. Peace.

Brilliant! &mdash 09/08/08 - 05:19:37 PM
I love the fact you like this! I'm trying to fit my memories into tunes that are like pictures. Does that make sense?

Hope so. Thanks for tuning in.

I think that &mdash 09/09/08 - 07:43:04 AM
you have captured the essence of a big city perfectly. could be the opening to a film with everyone rushing around. Lovely piano.
Cheers

Thanks Lenny G &mdash 09/09/08 - 03:28:54 PM
It could be a bit more hectic, but I hope this describes a quieter moment away from the crowds -maybe downtown around the West Village as opposed to the main drags...

Maybe one day I'll do a film score like my namesake Craig Armstrong, LOL!

Cheers for tuning in and your comment is valued as always,

I get it completely &mdash 09/25/08 - 02:37:16 PM
my wife Lisa is big into nothingness - so I live with the concept on a daily basis. Nothing will keep us together. Heard that before - right?
Really missed you last night at dinner with CJ - sorry my scene was so touch and go.
Your arrangement and voices here are beautiful and very inside/outside. If I weren't working so much I'd be doing the same thing here in Paris - nothing.

Doing nothing = doing something &mdash 09/25/08 - 03:15:07 PM
Going for a meal with friends, just a normal everyday thing, something and nothing. Me & Jake doing it in NYC - now that is a whole diffren't thang!

Paris will still be there when I'm not. See you in Brooklyn!

the plucking &mdash 09/25/08 - 07:19:23 PM
gave it an old school synth feel, but i think you were successful in bringing it into our decade. i liked the piano hits as well. they were simple, but neat enough to engage the listener. kind of reminded me of schroder( sp?) fomr the peanuts, banging on his toy piano, throwing down some chopin, or Beethoven.. great post.

Funny you should mention Peanuts &mdash 10/03/08 - 08:07:57 AM
I am a big fan of Vince Guaraldi that did the music for Charlie Brown et al. What a cool sound his trio produced - try and listen to a track of his called "Skating" and that will transport you back to your childhood. I love when a tune paints a picture - that's what I have attempted here.

Thanks for taking time to comment. Appreciated.

Summer In Siam &mdash 10/03/08 - 08:14:00 AM
The Pogues - nice.

That downward piano reminds me of descending into the subway at Christopher St, just to jump a train to, well, anywhere. I like the surprize of getting up to street level and not knowing exactly what's around. A small adventure in the big city!

You must go back ASAP!

Thanks for listening / commenting.

I'm sure you'll get there some day - it's a magnet for artists such as yourself.
I must say, the 'BIG' project is an outstanding addition to the MJ catalog - thanks to all for the work that has gone into the event.
