Gamma Ray Burst

Description
I think the state of mind that I was in when I penned the lyrics to this are summed up by the last verse:

you need to understand the rules my friend,
here one man must meet his end.
one comes out though two went in;
it's the dead man who really wins.

This is easily interpreted to mean that death is better than life. That's not what I'm trying to get at- for anyone who is familiar with a gamma ray burst and what it would do if it were to blast a planet, it's pretty terrifying. What I'm trying to illustrate is the fact that once we accept that we are mortal and stop being foolish and obsessing over the future and other illusions, we can be truly present. Everything that is happening is happening now, so enjoy it!

of course I'm always busted up over something, usually a girl, so I'm the first one who needs to heed my own advice! Ironically enough, I found out later that the cliffs of Dover line would actually be significant, but when I wrote it, it wasn't intentional. Chances are that makes no sense, but it amounts in my mind to another strange synchronicity pointing to particular person, but stuff like that fascinates me. There was no deliberate pun when I wrote it though. Anyway, hope you dig it. Sorry about the hiss- I'm using a Shure SM57 vocal mic that I'm pretty sure would hate me if it could and I would reciprocate if it weren't irrational in the extreme! All feedback is awesome. Hope you dig it!

Lyrics
when you reach the cliffs of Dover
and scatter her ashes, it's finally over
and just like that, she was gone.

the skies grew dark and bleak and grey
but you'll meet again some sunny day
and the rain is falling down all around you.

they cut him down as he ran
his blood had spilled out on the sand
and ultimately, we're all in prison
said the coroner to the man
but doc you just don't understand
that woman on the slab, it ain't her.

sometimes it can be reassuring
believing one day we'll all meet again
but that's when they pull the rug out from under you.

there's a note on apartment 41
but the ink has run and the words are gone
and that rain keeps right on pouring down around you.

they cut him down as he ran
his blood had spilled out on the sand
and in the end, we're all in prison
said the coroner to the man
but doc you just don't understand
that woman on the slab, it ain't her.

you need to understand the rules my friend
here one man must meet his end
one comes out though two went in
and it's the dead man who really wins.

when you reach the cliffs of Dover
and scatter her ashes, it's finally over
and just like that, she was gone.

True
I think this is a nicely written song with some great lyrics. Honestly delivered lyrics. I suggest collabing with rsorensen on this. This is much like him.

Very good song. man.

I hope you
and you Shure SM57 can find a way to coexist. That comment made me smile. I have to think about your meaning. I agree it makes more sense to live in the present. It takes our whole lives to get it and then, just like that, it is gone. Great ballad and wonderful singing. Thank you.

Excellent song
The song sounds terrific, but you have a lot of hiss spoiling it at the moment.

I came here after reading your comment to Lank about mastering in GB. You mentioned mastering the mp3 exported from GB into Audacity - you'd be much better off using an aif file for starters. You have a lot of presence on this, but it sounds like Audacity has given the background hiss a lot of presence too.

I've had a lot of success with Ozone 3 (available as a demo from the Izotope site) for mastering in Logic (apparently it works fine in GB too).

I've never used Audacity (although I have a copy), but to me it sounds a little primitive for your needs - I'm probably talking through my hat!

This song deserves a better final gloss - I'm surprised that there aren't options available in GB4 that could do a better job than you have here.

Top song, hope you don't mind the suggestions.

Can I also suggest that you give the vocal parts a bit of separation - the echoing of the lines is a good effect, but for me, panning the tracks maybe 5 to 10 right and left, they wouldn't get in each others way so much.

Great song, really good performance too.

forgot to ask
have you cleaned up the spaces between your words on the vocal track (just replace everything that isn't a vocal with silence on the vox track). I just read your problem with the mic hiss. Maybe there is something interfering with the signal somehow. What sort of interface are you using? Or does that model Shure just hiss a lot?

Wow !
I'm really touched by this ... Your voice , Lyrics , The playing...Music ... it's so intense - sometimes 'slow' makes 'more' , The slow is AWESOME & makes the "icing on the Cake" here.. Wow WONDERFUL so glad I got to hear this, happened to see on the new mjpage someone commenting on this song ! May never heard it otherwise. Thank You for this great experience I'm humbled by it . wow . lena

THIS is so true what U say here & it can take half a life before realizing it's the way it works : ) some ppl never get to experience this but You illustrate it very well thx ! "What I'm trying to illustrate is the fact that once we accept that we are mortal and stop being foolish and obsessing over the future and other illusions, we can be truly present. Everything that is happening is happening now, so enjoy it! "

thank you so much!
That's super kind! That song languished in a semi-finished state for a long time, but I felt like the sentiment needed to be brought out and gotten across. The original vocal work was dreadful, but I was a lot more satisfied with how this came out.

In any event, thank you so very much for the kind words! :)
