Description:
From Cat:

It's hard to know what genre to place a Sonic Magpie track under--so often we combine styles and dodge 'the norm.'

While the original instrumental track of "Still Here":

http://www.macjams.com/song/41777

was submitted as 'Lo-Fi,' this track has moved to a different place, though I'm not sure which genre, specifically...

When Bryn posted "Still Here," he invited me to add to it if I wanted.
So, one Saturday I sat down to record vocals just to see what came of it.
I initially recorded the chorus vox using the words "Still here" that was the song's title.

But as I finished my recording of the chorus, I 'heard' a lead voice--something not at all like my own voice: a male voice, and something more in the style of Bowie. Since I wanted to represent what else I was hearing for Bryn, I decided I'd simply improvise a melody line and words....just whatever came to mind.

One take later, I had a suggested vocal line--again not at all expecting it to be more than a guide track for another singer. Guess again...

Bryn spiffed up that lead vocal and blended it with the backing vocals, rebuilding the main instrumental from the bottom up and creating the track posted here.

Once again, I'm one lucky magpie to be working with ya, Bryn!
I love how you've incorporated my vocals into this track.
Thank you!!

Lyrics:
I'm still here
Trapped in my little box of my past
Will I ever see the end of time
Wrapped in my own confusion...ticking time
Always a way out--in my imagination
Always a way out--in contemplation
Beyond the confines of this empty room..

But I'm still here.
Always present, still here.
Revolutions, battles rage around this circle
But I never leave my little box of contemplation
I'm still here...
I'm still here...

I'm still here
I'm still here
In my little room, an empty space of contemplation
I'm still here...
I'm still here...

Wow! &mdash 09/06/08 - 08:01:43 PM
You are correct. Your voice is used as another instrument that plays its part in the whole piece but is so integral that it wouldn't be the same without your voice. Lovely piece of music that delights the soul. Thank you.

ambient? &mdash 09/06/08 - 08:03:39 PM
this takes you to another place. there is a bit of distortion in the vocalsit may just be me on my side. I just want to say this arrangement of the lyrics and the vocal changes follow the chord changes perfectly. This is a wonderful song in all ways vocally musically . Excellent now I have nothing left to say but thanks! :) downloaded

the mix has a massive open space & sound.

Really great &mdash 09/07/08 - 07:00:12 AM
I love the melody and the placement of the vocal in this, but maybe because you mentioned it, I hear a male as a lead voice for this. I keeping hearing a Moorlandt type of vocal. I think it's the sense of desperation in the lyrics that suggests that a guy would be singing them. Even the phrasing sounds Bowie-like. It's pretty darn cool, though. Love the background vocals, too! Short!

Your vocal is excellent on this, and I particularly love the intro. I agree with Char - it's like another instrument. Cool song, with a very nice groove to it, and wonderful vocal performance. Better than most of what you hear on the radio, for sure. Very cool. Kudos to you both. Thanks for sharing this with us. Peace.

I think your Bowie comment is right on. What a groovy track. Easy to let it just wash over you like a little box of rain.
