Description
Yet another song from the 1999 sessions. My effort at being Hank Williams Snr. It started out as a joke at an alcoholic friend of mines expence but after her composed and thought me how to play the slide guitar solo I guess the laugh was on me. Serves me right. I'm glad to report that the same man has since quit the beer and is becoming an amazing guitarist as if he wasn't already.

Lyrics
I got new shoes to wear
New hat on my head
I'm going down town with my friends
now I know it is wrong to drink all the time
but my heart feels better this way

When I found your note on top of the fridge
I cried over each single line
Then I got up put on my new clothes
And I rambled down town with my friends

I got new shoes to wear
New hat on my head
I'm going down town with my friends
now I know it is wrong to drink all the time
but my heart feels better this way

Now a friend of mine said it gets better with time
I cried when I thought that he lied
But to my surprise I soon did learn
that hearts heal much slower than bones

I got new shoes to wear
New hat on my head
I'm going down town with my friends
now I know it is wrong to drink all the time
but my heart feels better this way

Hard to swallow
Don't get me wrong - I love a good drinking song! Nashville, I'm (constantly) told isn't too fond of them these days, but what do they know?

Still ... this song: Good feel and yes, it evokes memories of Hank Sr. But that isn't enough to make a song a song.

This song, in my humble opinion, is extremely repetitive - how many times do we hear the line "ramble downtown with my friends"? Enough, already!

A song of this sort needs some powerful images - there may be one or two buried amidst the rubble here, but for the most part, the lines are predictable and cliche and (at the risk of being repetitive) extremely repetitive (or had I already mentioned that?).

But I repeat myself ... (okay, okay) ....

In addition to the recycled, mundane lyrics, the song is performed at a very slow pace (rightfully so, given the nature of the tune)but comes in at something like 4:30 minutes? Unless you truly have some VERY interesting things to say in the song (which you don't), this song would do well to wrap up at about the 2:30 mark. You could easily cut out 2 minutes of rambling downtown with your friends here.

Really, I liked the music, liked the delivery of the vocals, but lyrically, this song nearly drove me to drink!

One man's opinion ... feel free to ignore!

absolutely EXCELLENT tune man!!! i am totally loving this...it's perfect in every way! great authentic country/blues, unlike the pop/country that has been blowing up the radios for some time now...that by the way i cannot stand. this is great, and i mean that from the bottom of my heart. has to be one of the best songs i've heard in a while...very well done my friend!

Cool
dude, with your new hat and shoesies..me like, its authentic country and it is the type of rambling sort of repetitive lyric that gives it a drunk drinking singing song feel .You can almost see the guy and his buddies shambling along giving it the "I love you I really do" routine.Nice One
