Description
I'm having some trouble with the song genre catagory for most of my music. I'm open to feedback on that. Anyway this is a work-in-progress.

Lyrics
hear you calling but i don't know what for
hear you calling but the truth shut the door
hear you saying that you're not like them
hear you talking but the night has come

(you steal my love to set you free)

my fire you saw when you called its secret name
the secret name you came in knowing from your own flame
our flames our saddest pains bend and flicker the same
but for me you'd never come; i forfeit this game

(you steal my love to set you free)

genre-osity
Don't worry too much about genres... sometimes it helps to choose an appropriate genre, so that people who only look in a narrow category of music, will find your music. But I can see how this music is hard to classify. Dark ballad? Anyway, very pretty piano piece, dark and moody, nicely played. The singing was appropriately sparse, and you have a nice voice. As you may have noticed with your recording, it is REALLY HARD to record a live piano. I think you did nicely here. You may want to try recording the piano first on one track, then recording your singing separately on a different track, so you can play with the volume and effects on each track separately. In this case, you could add some equalizer "boost" to the higher frequencies of your voice to make it more clear and not so muddy sounding.

I hope these are helpful ideas. I really enjoyed this! And a belated welcome to Macjams.

thnx!
Thanks for the tip about recording- I will try that next time I record this.

Yes, dark ballad I think is my genre. that works! Unfortunately they don't give that as an option.

Another nice one
Yeah, you could probably enhance frequencies a bit to bring out that piano. But I really like the content. Esp. the intro.

The main reminds me a bit of Patti Smith, if you don't mind me saying. It is very nice.

You could try separating the piano from the vocals my pulling the mids out a bit during the voice parts. That way the highs and lows of the piano can fill around and "embrace" the voice, so to speak. I don't know too much about production. But there are many here who do.

Great song!

hmm..
So I actually know nothing about production yet. I am new to garage band and I am just experimenting right now. What do you mean about the mids? (yeah I really know nothing!) It sounds like a good tip but I don't know how to do it.

mids
Now I'm out of my element a bit. I've heard the middle frequencies are best for the solo parts. If you look at an equalizer. the mids are called midrange. Highs are treble and lows are bass.

I'm challenged by production, but here are some ideas:

There are many forums that discuss issues like this. I go back and fourth, rather to spend time on art, the art of production or both!?!?!

Good luck,
Doug

as far as production check this site out

tweakheadz.com

its where I learned everything I know about production and its simple to read. browse around the guide and try things out.

you've already got wonderful songs, production will just make it easier for you to communicate them to the world.

Piano
I'm loving getting to hear a song with so much of your piano playing in it. I agree with Drak that the piece seems just a right balance of piano and voice; it lets the piano emote.

you're getting some great advice, so I can't wait to see you grow with your music production.

piano love
this is my 3rd attempt trying to comment- it keeps deleting on me!! Anyway I keep writing why I love the piano for writing music.... but I suppose now in this third comment I will not analyze it and just let it be.

Very nice
This is a very cool song. You really sing it nicely, and the melody is very good. Others have mentioned the recording issue, and the idea of separating the recording of the two tracks - I think that would be a good idea. BUt really that is just tinkering - the song's the thing, and this is a terrific piece. You also sing with great feeling - soulful and evocative. Nicely done. WElcome to the neighborhood. Peace.
