Lyrics
I act the fool
So you ask me where
This thing is going
Is there something on my mind

You think it's cool
To tell your friends
That I'm your killin' time
'Til the next one comes a long

You've got bigger plans
Guess I'm not the man

-Chorus-
I'm not the man to hold you
The one that gets to have your heart
When your lovin' comes around
I'm not the man
That's going to be there when time comes
To give your love away
Why should I stay

I start to go
But you tell me that
You still want me
To stay with you tonight

You act the fool
So you ask me where
This thing is going
Is there a way to save it now

Hey put me in your plans
Or else I'm not the man

-Chorus-

Why should I stay
If I'm not on your mind all night and day
Like you are with me
Why should I stay
If you don't give me back all that I'm feeling
I need some healing

Then I'll be the man .....

Chorus I'll be the man, etc

Welcome to MacJams. I know its your third posting, but I'm a little slow these days. Really enjoyed your song. Sounds like you have some recording experience. Nice vocal, guitar balance. Look forward to more!

Thanks

welcome
this somehow reminds me of John Hartford. Good stuff you got here. Nice kind of a late 60's early 70's country sound.

Nicely done
Boy, this song sure does have a nice vibe to it. A toe tapper, no doubt! Nicely done, indeed.

Coulple of thoughts: First, the hook ... "I'm not the man" is rampant throughout the song, yet the title (and presumably, the hook) is "Why Should I Stay?". My feeling is that "I'm not the man" or "I'll be the man" -- all those similar assertions found within the song are competing with and, therefore, diminishing the power of the hook. I would look for away to restructure the song so that the hook stands apart from any such competitors for the attention of the listener!

Also, the bridge ... (ah, the bridge!). Here, you do repeat your hook/title (Why should I stay?) twice. Yet, the bridge is not necessarily a traditionally accepted location for the hook. The hook is typically found either at the end of each verse, and/or the beginning and/or end of the chorus. The bridge is most typically reserved for some profound idea that increases tension leading back to the hook.

So ... structurally, I find some challenges with your song. But maybe that sets it apart from the crowd. Yours to consider ... just wanted to bring it to your attention in the event you've not given it consideration.

Apart from that, I didn't feel as if the "You act the fool" stanza (i.e. 2nd verse/2nd stanza) rang authentic. I think I see where you're going with this, but I just don't know if this is the strongest lyrical content you could bring to the table to make your point. It sounds a bit contrived to me.

Anyhow ... I offer these comments in the spirit of "constructive criticism." Clearly, there is much craft and skill in evidence here ... nicely done!

Traditionally accepted...
I couldn't help but comment on this.
If people stayed within the confines of what is traditionally accepted, there would be no musical progression. Musical greats of the centuries past were shunned and spat upon by the powers that be in what was the music industry of the time for not conforming to what was traditionally accepted, or expected, yet we look back on them now as geniuses.
I would pay little, if any mind to what someone like "sngwrter" has to say.
If the song sounds right to you, then it is.
His narrow take on music is clearly not one of an artistic nature, and will likely serve him little good in his own ventures.
Good luck, and welcome to macjams.

Reply to sngwrtr
When deciding on a theme maybe more than one point is being discussed/shown in the lyrical content. Successful pop songs in any genre must use repetition to both set up and deliver the hook(s).

Here the choice was between the two phrases as "sngwtr" mentioned. It was a choice made by the change in sentiment at the end: "That's why I should stay".

Sometimes , especially when pitching songs to A& R types or screeners, if you get too cryptic , they don't get it. If you hand them the story in an easy to understand, dumbed down lyric they tell you you're too obvious.

Hopefully the ENTIRE content of the song from the intro to the end grabs them enough to ask them to try to understand the lyric or enjoy the song.

Can't please everyone. But even if you go "Gold" on an album you've sold 500k copies to the music buying public of 100's of millions of people. A low percentage to be a success, indeed.
