Description:
Everyone loves the Monggz as much as I do, but I was first to cover this classic songg that pokes fun of guys like me who think they can be rock stars after story time with the kids.

I wanted to post it for the MJ Cover Challenge, but it took me 3 weeks to find the hour I needed to sing for 15 minutes. You do the math. I still ended up using a junky microphone and singing in the room next to my sleeping babies. Katyraven was surprised I didn't wake them up as she heard me hopping around and "singing" from the other side of the house. I opted for the stock "Applause and Laughter" GB sample of the kids shouting "Yeaaaaaa!!!!" when I realized I wouldn't be able to pull a garage scream off at 10:30 on a school night. It's not perfect, but it is rock'n'roll.

Here's the original version http://www.macjams.com/song/27722

Yeah, I am a living breathing victim of what should be the MacJams Theme song. I'm a rock'n'roll dad, the Electro Pop version.

Sorry kids.

Lyrics:
Rock'n'roll it was over
the very day your father
came rushing into your room
and said turn up the volume

He is bad
He is mad
he's a rock'n'roll dad

He is bad
He is mad
he's a rock'n'roll dad
are you glad
are you sad
to have a rock'n'roll dad
are you glad
are you sad
to have a rock'n'roll dad

Torn T-shirt and pajamas
put the P.A back in Papa
if only he wouldn't brag
that he could roll a better fag

He is bad
He is mad
he's a rock'n'roll dad
He is bad
He is mad
he's a rock'n'roll dad
are you glad
are you sad
to have a rock'n'roll dad
are you glad
are you sad
to have a rock'n'roll dad

Yeaaaa!!!!

I'm rather fond of one or two of your songs. Don't be surprised if I grab my wooden microphone and try one of them.

You crack me up with your humor. You have to be the second funniest guy at MacJams.

Bob

Sadly I can relate. &mdash 09/26/08 - 07:15:49 AM
Just heading out the door and checked my email to see this posting. It's all great but I really dig the lyrics and the instrument break down after the chorus.

The funny thing is my youngest is still to young to roll his eyes, but when I sing, I just know there are times if he could, then he would!

Hey Pete,

Happy hunting man. Hope the moose you shoot rolls his eyes back in his head before you skin him.

Oh, I thought this was the hunting forum.... Sorry. Hey, can you pass me a Molson's?

Monggz Songgz For Kiddz &mdash 09/26/08 - 07:31:20 AM
I always loved the original version of this song and sometimes I sing a version of it to my kids when I'm trying to remind them how cool their old man thinks he is. I really resisted the urge to put a nasty guitar solo in the song. I wanted to make it the least typical rock'n'roll song I could (imagine that), but I ended up failing because on one of my vocal track I used the preset for Male Rocker Vocals.

The Kids Are Alright &mdash 09/26/08 - 11:21:25 AM
Hey Len,

Ruby loved the music and looks so cute with the headphones on bouncing her head back and forth. When I get home tonight, I'll try to persuade her and Katy to listen to it with the vocals. I think Katy heard enough of it down the hallway last night, but Ruby will probably humor her daddy.

Oh yeah, it's a good thing I don't have a cool band name, because if I did, I would print enough kids t-shirts for my kids to wear everyday, like a uniform. Are you glad? Are you sad you have a Rock'N'Roll Dad?!

electro dad &mdash 09/26/08 - 08:27:52 AM
First of all, you're a brave man to have tackled this songg whose original defies all rules of musicianship, and made sense of it.

Then, it's cool you've done a cover so different ad personnal, as covers should be. The sounds you chose for the synths and the voice gave it a warm almost soothing, atmosphere, like a kind of lullaby sung by the kids' musical toys while the mad dad is sweating it out in the basement

And also, I'm glad you were sensitive to the humour in this, which is not as wicked as it seems since most of my mj heroes, as well as Brentford, are bona fide rock'n'roll dads.

Brave Men &mdash 09/26/08 - 12:49:17 PM
Thanks for noticing my daring nature. It was brave men like Neil Armstrong and the guy who singgs for the Monggz that deserve all the credit here. They broke the rules of breaking rules. I just follow in their giant footsteps. But enough about me and my experimental jet test pilot attitude. It's about rock'n'roll and it's about playtime with the kids. A difficult balance, but hey, if they actually think I'm a rock star, well that's twice as many people as I ever had with or without the help of the Monggz.

Thanks for not getting mad at me like buckhorn did when I covered his song. I'm still trying to remove cowboy boot debris from places I'd rather not mention, namely San Antonio, TX.

This Monggz songg has been one of my personal favorites since the first time I heard it, so it was a real pleasure trying to make it mine. I felt it was about me, so I could do what I pleased. Glad you like it.

Thanks cj.

R&R Dad &mdash 09/26/08 - 10:01:43 AM
It had to happen. After dozens of songs, practically inspired by my life's heartache and troubles with my ex, Deanna Sue, you had soar to a new low and do this cover.

Well, cinco mas armamentos, I'll let you in on a little, filthy family secret. My dad was the original rock-n-roll dad. Unless someone like Chuck Berry,Buddy Holly or Elvis had kids, but that's besides the point.

It all started in the year 1970. Biafra surrenderd after 32-month fight for independence from Nigeria, US troops invaded Cambodia, and Four students at Kent State University in Ohio were slain by National Guardsmen at a demonstration protesting said incursion into Cambodia. But things were not all peaches and cream.

My dad was earning some extra sangria money as a logistical expert for a local Three Dog Night show. A logistical expert sees that all the equipment needed to perform a rock and roll show is set up and tested. He would physically take equipment and instruments from the transport truck and arrange them on the stage. After the show, he would physically pack the equipment and place it back in the truck. Then he could eat and drink as much as he wanted (in true rock style) from what ever was left on the buffet table in the dressing room.

He used to brag that he was the brain child behind "Check, Check 1-2, Check.

Anyway, rock and roll's allure proved too much for my father and he left with Three Dog Night.... actually it was the guys who opened for Three Dog Night, I think they were called The Groovy Peaceniks.

I was 7. I never saw him again, which my mom says is a good thing.

I get a post card from my dad every now and again and there is always postage due.

Thanks Five..................ass!

Peaches and cream?

Three Dog Night?

Wow.

Good one dad &mdash 09/26/08 - 11:09:30 AM
A plethora of noises and sounds that could only be produced by one man..............CJDaley.

All jokes aside. This had me doing a little Devo dance in my little music room back here.

My kids already think I'm nuts.........thanks.

Great job Bob,

Dave

Rock'n'roll Lifestyle &mdash 09/26/08 - 02:34:57 PM
I did submit a song to the Cover Challenge, but I have decided that I will be covering more and more MJ artists as time goes on. There's too much brilliant material here.

Watch out Peter - you could be next!

Now excuse me while I help Hondo tie his shoes.

With those five extra arms &mdash 09/26/08 - 12:09:56 PM
you can work miracles. Imagine what you could've done with some Fisher Price rhythm toys and that teeny piano that Shroeder uses in Peanuts. My Dad was a closet Johnny Mercer/Perry Como. He sang to us in the car and I loved it. Thanks.

Oh I see - you blame your father for driving you to MacJams and the likes of this community!

I am the original Fisher Price musician. Maybe I'll record some of my favorites? Maybe it should be the next challenge!

Thanks Char. Great job on your new tune with the ice man.

Dads That Rock &mdash 09/26/08 - 02:42:15 PM
Ridd, you're living proof that dads can rock, but my question is where do you find the time to be a dad? Are your kids guitar techs or something? Or do you sing them to sleep right after dinner and then bolt to the studio?

Cool &mdash 09/26/08 - 02:49:15 PM
This is excellent. The keyboards work really well, filling the phones with instrumental color. The lyrics are hilarious - a great song, and I'll certainly be checking out the original. Nice vocal, especially given the circumstances of the recording! Very nicely done. Cool. Peace.

this is great. i was thinking that "dad rock" could be made cool, it doesn't have to sound like Steely Dan or Michael McDonald. you did it. you gave me a new anthem, a guide to live by. something to crank in the car.

love the electro sounds, really good composition and very good lyrics and well sung. Great song, should make more stuff like this. This track has to be one of my favourites as it sound so fun, with inclings of kraftwerk. Very creative Bob, love it.

Great lyrics and I liked the electro-pop treatment.

I got told off by my daughters for playing my music too loudly so I guess I'm that man :-)

I LOVE that photo! Is that cute little boy your son?

cjdaley's writing is the best. This is a GREAT song. I haven't listened to his yet, but I LOVE your version of it.

I think it is pretty romantic, the rock 'n' roll dad silently rocking out so as not to wake the kids. Keep it up. I like electropop interpretations of rock themes. does that make sense?
