Description:
"East Long" is one of four tunes that make up the "Woodbury Suite". It's a painting of my lovely wife walking down to the dock, diving into a crystal clear lake, and taking a swim.

I visited the lake, recently. A bit cold for swimming, now...but a sweet escape from the problems of the world, all the same. Hopefully this will have the same effect on you, too. Nice and easy...

BTW: The tune fades in a bit at the start. It's a remake of the same tune I posted when I first came here (which I've since deleted). In fact...all of the tunes from the suite have been re-recorded. I like them much better this way.

It's a glacier lake located in the Northeast Kingdom section of Vermont. 150 feet deep in the middle. Wonderful place. I'm glad you can relate...and that's a very nice offer, thanks.

...it's funny how this one wrote.The A and B sections in that one sitting while Rachel swam. The A was mirroring this beautiful lake/mountains/sky combination. The B was watching Rachel swim. I found the bridge later that night, when I recalled her walking down to the dock and diving in. I also put a lot of thought into the details after that, yes. I appreciate that you'd comment on that.

Sure sounds like one, but I can't be sure. Sounds very clean and crystal clear on this piece, which is just lovely.

Nice relaxing track the soothes the nerves just like the lake and the picture of it does. Very mice Bob, very nice indeed.

...a National Radiotone. Dobro and National used to be one and the same. Then they split up and National tanked. Dobro became the household name for a reso...similar to the relation between Kleenex and tissues. National's made a big comeback in the last couple of decades, though.

It's a great, great guitar. I think you'd love to play it.

...always a sucker for the 6-5 melody and you use it throughout as your main motif. This is a very restful composition, Bob, played with your characteristic command of the guitar. It is a piece I know I will enjoy listening to many times.

Yep...fingerpicks all the way.

As a classical guitarist, broken nails used to drive me completely crazy. So, when I got back into the steelstrings (both my Martin and this reso), I put a lot of work on using fingerpicks. Nice to have an option that doesn't require the perfect manicure.

I was awed when you brought us the first recordings of your Woodbury Suite, and it does sound clearer and more jubilant here. I can see the sparkle on the surface of the lake, all the way from here. Gorgeous mastery of that instrument, sir! And wonderful composing too. Waiting (as patiently as a dragon can wait) for the other parts :-)

...you were listening and commenting on the original posts. I liked them, too, but was very unhappy with my choice of including compression on those recordings. As they were done in a studio; I was stuck.

You're right. This recording allows for the fullness and brightness of the instrument to really come through. Hail to Apple for the invention of Garageband!

I did record another part of the suite, earlier this summer, if you get a moment. The other 2 will follow over time (I learned my lesson when I posted all 4 at once, the first time).

...in this recording, and lots of metal... It's not 'flat' or too smoothed out or compressed...so the overall effect is that of hearing your National in a real space...

'Natural recording' hi-fi nuts would love this one...It has me looking up the Rode NT3 again and going, "hmm"...

The feel of this manages to combine something pastoral and something familial... I'm listening just before heading upstairs to finish cleaning/vacuuming my son's room...Gives me that necessary spiritual strength, ya know?...

...playing with the mic placement on the Radiotone...interesting combinations of wood and metal, according to the angle...

My brother's a total audiophile and he MUCH prefers these recordings, minus the compressor and with one mic, to the originals. I do, too...and I'm happy with a transistor radio.

...I often bring just the Martin (tough to carry all of 'em with me on the subway). It can carry all of my tunes; from the slide to the classical.

This tune sounds beautiful on that guitar. Very deep. I like to begin my set with it, in fact...

lively recording (or re-recording) of this. I like the background story, and the fact that you share those simple, yet memorable moments through your music.
Don't you love the ability to redo things like this when you have a chance? The original may have been great, but you have a chance to 'say' the same music from a different point of view.

...and, "yes"...I'm soooo happy with the new found ability of recording my own works.
When I first recorded the Woodbury Suite, it was at a professional studio and cost me over $1,000 to get the 4 tunes recorded, mixed, and mastered. And they still didn't come out the way I wanted.
Now I can get 'em the way I want in the comfort of my own home. Amazing...

Another good acoustical composition and performance from you. I wonder how the tone in this captured recording differs from listening present, by your side... (that would be a privilege!) sounds slightly "metallic" to me, but I don't know guitars very well.

You've spoken in the past about physical therapy you've had and your recovery. With the control you exhibit here, we have evidence and you've given us back a vehicle of musical, spiritual and visual therapy here. Thanks for this.

The tone you're hearing is pretty much what the guitar gives out. That's cuz it's made of laminate wood with an aluminum cone. Here's a picture I took of it on the porch where I wrote the tune you heard, here:

I can get more or less of the metallic sound, depending on how I slant the mic. In this one, I kept it midway so it would stay balanced. In the tune "Hayseed", it's more towards the aluminum cone. Brighter.

I've had to rehab my almost lost finger and totally re-taught myself to play without looking too much at the neck of the guitar so that the arthritis in my neck would subside. I'm sure there will be other challenges. Gotta keep on keepin' on, though...and pay very solid attention to the advice of the good doctor(s).

some how the gutar at times reminds me of the accoustic guitar Greg Lake would do on and old ELP tune.
It must be a chord or two that he uses, or the tuning.

...figuring out and playing Greg Lake's stuff since "Court of the Crimson King". A very, very big influence on my playing. Both acoustic and electric (that lead he does on "Brain Salad Surgery" is forever implanted in my mind).
