Description:
I speeded the loop up to 240 bpm, threw on some wah, phaser, and tremolo. At that stage it sounded like a nice arpeggio for a dance track, so I found the drums, and tried to come up with a bassline, still thinking of the track as an instrumental. When I got the bassline (which took ages to record, and which has about seven drop-ins, just in case anyone thinks I can suddenly really play the bass !), it reminded me of a song I recorded years ago that I was never happy with and had abandoned. I dug out the lyrics, rewrote them, came up with a new chorus, and this is what I ended up with. Hope you like it.
Lyrics:
Waiting For The Hit Her voice is like a cancer inside your head
She says he’s only sleeping but I think he’s dead
A stupid karaoke, antiseptic wine
The wasted singer’s joking and we’re running out of time
Struck out Friday night spinning with the world
Nothing’s going right you smoke until you burn
Storming through the days stripped down to the core
There’s something in her face you’ve never seen before
The less said the better, the less said the better
Tomorrow’s just a daydream
Your brilliant mind’s a stone
You’re waiting for the hit
I guess you’re not alone
She's only half the woman she used to be
She says she saw it coming but I don't believe her
You could be sick and weary but it's okay
Not quite but very nearly a perfect day
The less said the better, the less said the better
The day becomes a blur and you’re looking for the door
You’re blinded by the light, you’re sinking through the floor
Staying in one place where everything is near
You’re looking for the face you lost behind the years

Bass... The bass line you came up with is very listen-able. Vocals are sharp too. Your mods to the loop give it a techno freshness.
Thanks
Bill
dajama
Glad you liked the bass line. It hurt my fingers to play it, but I hoped it was worth the effort! I had fun playing around with the loop; speeding it up was the key for me - suddenly it became listenable! Thanks for checking this out. Peace.
I really dug the base ine. It helped carry the song forward. The instruments were solid and there were some nice changes. My only critique is that the song may have benefited from heavir guitarntrack to gice=vei it a bit moe boost.

Man !! the bass boomin so great ..with your
singing ..I m enjoyin the strucutre of the song
very impressive my friend !! thnx alot for sharin !!!!
dajama
Thanks for checking it out, and delighted you like it. The bass was a bit too boomy in earlier mixes; I hope it fits in better here. Glad you like the structure - it's part of putting a song together that I think about a lot. This one had more sections in earlier incarnations until I started cutting! Glad you think the final version works. Cheers, my friend. Peace.
...the bass is outstanding! Indeed, the whole tune is simply great. The vocals remind me of some stuff OYSTERBAND did a few years back.
I love it!
Be well!
dajama
Glad you think the effort was worth it. As a non-bass player, coming up with and executing a bass riff are very different things, and this was a grind! But I was pretty happy with the results, and I'm delighted you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. Cheers, my friend. Peace.
wurzel
Very danceable :-)
dajama
Glad you liked it, and delighted it got you groovin'! Thanks for stopping to check it out. Cheers. Peace.

I took the loop down to 40. I like this iteration of the loop.
Tasty guitar and really smooth production on the whole piece. I love the harmonies. Seems not to many people want to do good harmonies on the choruses anymore.
dajama
Glad you liked the direction I took; I loved what you did with it. And thanks for the nod on the harmonies. I'm not very good at them, but I do think they add something to songs (certain songs at least). Thanks for checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
sloparts
Way to go Dave. You not only tamed the loop, you put it to good effect in this old song you resurrected.
The Bass line is way too cool man. The whole song has an excellent vibe to it. Like I said, this is very cool my friend.
Be well and be cool,
Ed
dajama
Glad you enjoyed it. Especially happy you like the bass, and the use of the loop. This was a lot of fun to do. Thanks for checking it out. Cheers. Peace.
lavalamp
Sweet bass line. I agree, very danceable.
Excellent job, Dave.
You hoped we would like it and I DO.
Dave

I'm very happy you do! This was fun to do, and if it made anyone want to get up and shake something, then my work here is done! If you really want to start moving, by the way, check out Skean's track. Thanks for checking this out, Dave. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Skean
Very nice work... Love it... Cheers
dajama
Glad you liked it. Your was very cool - talk about danceable! I couldn't stop moving the whole time. Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

really nice & in the pocket. I love the way the chorus jumps in. The bass is fabulous but its the guitar that steals the show. The atonal and partial pauses in the solo make it akin to being there.
dajama
I am so happy you like the guitar. I found it tough to find something that worked. My initial efforts were very atonal and dissonant, but the reality is that to pull off that approach successfully, in my opinion, you really need to be great at tonal, non-dissonant playing! And I'm not, so my efforts sounded annoying rather than edgy. This version was about the 28th take, I think, and I'm delighted you enjoyed it. Thanks for stopping by to check it out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
lengold
there is a touch of genius about this. Fantastic performance and production. Definite download. Thanks.
Cheers
Len
dajama
You are way, way too kind, but thanks! Glad you liked it and thanks for downloading - I hope it holds up after repeated listening. I really appreciate your support - it encourages me so much. Cheers, man. Peace.
davisamerica
" a touch of genius" ... yep! David this is so solid. Vox are wonderful as well as everything else. That whacked loop spawned a killer track. VERY VERY KILLER !!
dajama
Speaking of genius...Thanks for your nice words, man. I'm glad you liked it. Amazing what can come of a rather humdrum loop when you take a machete to it! Thanks again, my friend. I really appreciate your stopping by to check this out. Cheers. Peace.

nice things coming out of this challenge, all different.
for some reason this makes me think a bit of Blondie, a little disco a little rock.
nicely done
dajama
I'll take a Blondie reference any day. Back when I was young and foolish (before I became old and foolish) I never really had much time for Blondie, probably because there was a bit too much disco in there! But I grew to love 'em and I'm glad you hear a hint of that vibe here. Thanks for checking this out. Cheers, man. Peace.
Moviz
a great diversion from your normal style and it suits you, great job on the vocals and the guitar solo with excellent lyrics too..... great work with the bass as well, regards M
dajama
I'm glad you liked it. It was a lot of fun to do, and I love that these challenges kind of nudge you out of your comfort zone. If nothing else, it helps you test your limits, and that can't be anything but good. Thanks for checking it out. Much appreciated, my friend. Peace.
WillyB
...clean, tight and great instruments/vox, great comp...as usual from you, Dajama.
dajama
Glad you liked it and happy you think it sounds tight; it was lover to begin with and I had to do some cutting before it ended up like this. Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Rik_Berryere
...and what a tasty song came together! This is a blast to listen to; those guitars just walk me out the door and show me the town. Very, very cool entry - this should be on the radio.
Why isn't this on the radio? Stupid radio.
dajama
Glad you enjoyed the trip, and thanks especially for the nod on the guitars. This was so much fun to do. You deserve huge kudos for putting this together and keeping the ball rolling. Thanks, man. You rock! Peace.
Char
something you had floating around. Very good. Loved it. Thanks.
dajama
Me too! The original version of this song was something that never got realized properly, and when I came up with the bass and found myself thinking of it, I thought it was worth a shot. I think it worked out well enough (certainly better than its previous incarnation!) and I'm chuffed you think so, too. Thanks for stopping by to check this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
can be very sneaky. "Oh yeah I've heard that before," and no alarms go off in the defenders head. Thus you have effectively made his defenses useless and the advantage is in your court.
That's what we have here, a deceptively simple but very effective weapon against the Dr.
I'm going to keep this one in reserve
CSP
dajama
truly I hope this weapon works; let's face it, the past is the past, until you drag it out into the cold, harsh light of day! Thanks for checking it out, and glad you think it will work! Cheers, man. Peace.
Elevator_Funk
has just a taste of Oysterhead in it. Good stuff.
dajama
Thanks, man. Glad you liked it. Thanks for taking the time to check it out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Diviner
I like all the sounds and instruments you have put esp what you have done with the loop. Clever lyrics and well sung with good harmonies. Solid track, very good.
dajama
Delighted you stopped by to check this out. I had fun with the loop; my initial reaction was 'ugh' but I've really grown quite fond of it now that it's been mangled. Thanks also for the nod on the harmonies; glad you liked them. Thanks again for stopping by to check this out; much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Alannah
.. the BASS .. and then I liked the trippy way it kinda turned into the Byrds mixed with a little 80's funk reincarnated ......
dajama
What a great description! You have a way with words. Glad you enjoyed the bass; if that grates then the whole song kinda grates! Thanks so much for stopping by and checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Rocha Malhada
Nice use of the loop as an effect for backdrop to this vintage rocker. I asked myself, "WHO is this?" :)
Nice tune!
. - Harold
dajama
Glad you liked this, and particularly glad it rocked for you! The loop sets the thing off and keeps it going, I think. Thanks for checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
bud
love the harmony vocals and the killer bass line. Everything here is perfect - very cool delay guitar work. One of the better song efforts I've heard so far.
dajama
Glad you liked it, and thanks especially for the nod on the guitar; glad you think it worked. Loved what you did with the loop - extremely cool! Thanks for checking this out. Cheers. Peace.
egobandit
When it gets to lead it really kicks love it. Excellent song and the bass works and sets the tone for this !
dajama
Glad you liked the guitar on this, and happy you enjoyed the song overall. Thanks, man, for stopping by and checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

...when the bright and just slightly distorted guitar arpeggiates through, or the solo pieces come through, or when the multi-vocals pop up...
This is one of those songs, again, where I've no idea what it's about, but it flat out doesn't matter. I love hearing it...
Off to the iTunes we go, we go...
Ed
dajama
That is just the coolest way to describe what you're describing, and of course I know exactly what you mean! (and I'm flattered!) What is this about? Well, it was about a night out back in the days when I had nights out. In fact, the lyrics amalgamate incidents and sensations and general vibes from many different nights on the town. Man, do I not miss those days! I am, as ever, flattered and ridiculously pleased that this is going on your iPod! Thanks, Ed. Peace.
Doadars Uncle
Nice feel, like Roxy, I never get tired of this! All and all great production.
Smooth performance!
dajama
Thanks, my friend. I'm really glad you liked this. I really loved your new one - truly cool! Glad you stopped by to check this one out - much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
michael2
this is great, that bass track adds so much and sounds really nice. your voice sounds greattoo, interesting how you were able to take this horrible loop and use it to complete something that was on the back burner. really nice job, and of course you get extra points for including vocs in a LIOLI challenge. nice one.
dajama
Glad you like the bass line. One of the things I like about challenges is that it can stir the creative juices a bit, and sometimes, as in this case, it can make something work that otherwise might have languished forever. Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for stopping by. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Lennon714
Love the bouncy warble of the loop! Of course you put a fantastic song on top of it. The guitar sound on the "The less said the better" part is so good.
dajama
Glad you liked it. Really impressed you take on this loop - very cool. Glad you like the guitar on the bridge part - I had to resist mucking around it more, and I think I would have wrecked it if I had. Thanks again for checking this out. Glad you liked it. Cheers. Peace.
I like it a lot! This is absolutely fantastic!
dajama
I really liked your track and I'm glad you enjoyed this one. It was fun to work on. Thanks for checking it out. Much appreciated. Peace.
five_extra_arms
From the first bass note, I was hooked on this amazing hit. Your vocal style is so secret agent cool. Dave, you put so much into this. The songwriting is so impressive and the performance is out of this world. I've always loved your songs, your voice and your style, but I think this is my favorite song of yours.
I'm really blown away, buddy.
Bob
dajama
I'm flattered, and glad you enjoyed this one. "secret agent cool"? Love it! I loved doing this; it was one of those that required a lot of fiddling around to get sounding decent, but it feels like it was worth it. Thanks for checking it out. Much appreciated. Peace.
SmokeyVW
that bass line is killa gorilla.
great dance track
thanks
dajama
Really glad you liked it, and thanks especially for the nod on the bass. I liked, which doesn't always mean it's listenable! Thanks again. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
Char
by the loop challenge. I must say you are excellent. Very good chorus. I'd like to see the lyrics.
Thanks.
dajama
Just been listening to some of your excellent work on Mr Big! You absolutely rock! Thanks for listening to this, and thank you for your kind words. Glad you mentioned the lyrics; I thought I'd posted them! Thanks again. Cheers. Peace.
rsorensen
great vibe on this track. I like how the verse contrasts with the chorus. excellent harmonies. Original tune, man. I really like it!
dajama
Glad you enjoyed this one. Yeah, there definitely is a contrast between the verse and the chorus - glad you think it doesn't jar on the ear. I think it kind of makes sense! Thanks for stopping by and checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
tokai
thumping bass, it is great when a track comes together as you describe. Sweet guitar sounds and really good lyrics. cheers
dajama
Glad you liked the bass, and happy the track worked for you. Yeah, I was really happy that this song came back to life through this challenge. Lots of fun to do. Thanks for stopping by to check this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.
LunaTrick
Nice harmonies - quality guitar work!
dajama
Glad you enjoyed it. The groove (particularly the bass) was a challenge, and the harmonies were hard, but I really enjoyed doing this one, and I'm delighted you enjoyed it. Your latest was very cool, by the way - really original. Thanks again, man. Cheers. Peace.
