Description:
I think a little sinister Jazz is in order for the good Doctor.... ;)

Thanks to Bryn for listens and suggestions, and for sending over a very cool distorted rhythm-and-effects track for me to use.
The instrumentals and vox are my musical weavings.
The loop in this is fairly obvious--i turned it backwards and assigned it a new software instrument ...enjoy!

Hardware:
you know...the usual....(MacMini for recording vocals, Behringer B-1 Condenser Mic, MAudio Mobile Pre USB, MAudio 61-es MIDI keystation, macbook for final mix)

Software:
and more of the same...(GB 4 for the MacMini, LogicPro Studio 8 for final mix on the MacBook)

interesting title! &mdash 09/27/08 - 12:40:31 PM
Those two words aren't often linked together, but it works.

Interesting departure from your usual vocal style; definitely different than your more classical offerings. Very enjoyable.

Good selection of sounds in a very clear mix. Imaginative treatment of the loop.

Suggestion: Not everyone may know what your hardware and software is, especially the newer listeners. But even I do not remember if you use GB or Logic or whatever, so I encourage you to always post what you use.

the title... &mdash 09/28/08 - 10:59:16 AM
...strangely enough, came about after I sent over an early mix of the loop with the bass and synth to Bryn to listen to.

I was trying to decide just 'what' it sounded like, and in the discussion, 'sinister jazz' was mentioned, and there it stuck.

When I recorded the vocals, I improvised the chorus first, and then improvised the lead afterwards. (yes...most everything I do is still improvised)

Thank you for listening and commenting, Cameron :)
It's always nice to get your impressions on a composition.

I'll go update my recording info: beyond upgrading my software to Logic, I'm still using the same old condenser mic and pre-amp I got nearly 4 years ago!

Oh Whoa now, Cat's on fire &mdash 09/27/08 - 03:55:46 PM
Searing vocal work and lush backgrounds make for one "Evil Woman" about to take your soul. If I were the Dr., I'd be afraid, very afraid.

this is a very spooky sound Cat and I just love it. At then it almost sounded like the song was a breathing, living being waiting to devour anyone who gets too close.

Excellent work Cat, just excellent.

I love how you describe it as almost sounding like a 'breathing, living being"...
I'm a storyteller at heart, so that's a very cool description!
Thank you for listening and commenting :)

Jazz and Self-Medication &mdash 09/27/08 - 06:50:39 PM
I so feel drunk when I listen to this. Very stylish! I dig the persistent synth that sort of winds away in the background.

Another Veteran of the LIOLI wars &mdash 09/27/08 - 08:41:41 PM
This is how you do it boys. And for the ladies on the team, you can throw your opponent of guard with subtle influences like this and then spring the trap when their guard is down. ( Well it worked when I had to catch my cat and take him to the vet ) (no puns intended) hoo hoo hah ha ha haaaaaa. Oops, wrong role. Sorry about that. (Gonna have to talk to casting about that)

Nice work here Super Looper. This is sure to confuse the Dr and throw him off guard. Very very well done I might add.

WOW ..... &mdash 09/28/08 - 01:49:59 AM
.. you do the "jazz thing" very well ...... (mind you I might have turned up that main vocal track just a titch .... or should I say "torch") ... I like it that you are "tinkering" around genre wise .. and trying new things (I still like the mystified things mind you) ... but I enjoyed this one a lot ....

I really do like to tinker in different vocal styles (which is why I have far too many songs posted on my song page!).

Thank you for dropping by for a listen and leaving a comment :)

OOoooooooooooo..... &mdash 09/28/08 - 07:42:46 AM
.....I've never been more fascinated and frightened in my life... I feel unable to resist that voice, that droning synth, but this is going to cost me I'm sure, cost me and clean me out and leave me a broken shadow of who I used to be, but the sweet, scary and sublime whisper of this song is just impossible to resist.....

fascinating and frightening, eh...? &mdash 09/28/08 - 09:50:06 PM
I'm always fascinated (and sometimes frightened!?) by others' responses to my songs. It's very cool to get feedback and see how a piece is observed or experienced by others--so I appreciate you taking a moment to let me know! :)
Thank you!

Sinister Jazz &mdash 09/28/08 - 08:39:05 AM
Very nice to hear this has developed
Love the vocals, particularly the background vocals.
When I get back in to making music one of these days perhaps I will do a version with no lead voc and background vocal sparseness emphasis...(I am creating my own oblique strategies here)
:-)
I like the snare drum that overlays the drum pattern I sent you...might be interesting to randonly meddle with the reverb settings on that throughout the song
The synth drone is one of my fave parts of this song and it helps to amplify the sinister feel
Great production (on Logic Pro 8 I assume?)

I'm with you on your comments here, and really am looking forward to the remix :)
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

And thank you for sending the drum pattern--it made all the difference in this song and added an entirely new dimension of 'color' to it :)

Very Misterious &mdash 09/28/08 - 09:46:42 AM
track...
Something rare to find these days.
The mood of this track makes me feel weird (in a very good way).
It is a great surprise to find your music.
I will surely delve your catalog to listen to more and more...
thanks for the music.

It's funny how this song evolved. I didn't set out to create a specific vibe when building upon the loop, but the addition of the modulating synth definitely set the sinister tone.
Mysterious, yes! Making music intuitively often is :)

Thanks so much for listening and leaving a comment.

and the backing tells the sinister part very well to the silky smooth bluesy vocals; great sound, regards M

Your so clever &mdash 09/28/08 - 05:37:13 PM
I would not have fathomed the loop were it not for your tell of its treatment. i had to listen a couple of time to grasp that transition. Love the vox back up and you are for ever coming up with tantalizing compositions. This is a little on the dark side but for facing the circumstances it is well placed. Love it and your new bio page. It just keeps one wanting to see and hear more.

Your are definitely one of the major Loopertroopers here, Major Mystified.

A little on the dark side, yes--just enough to keep balance with all the other more cheerful things I post :)

Thank you for your kind comments, and for taking the time to share them here!

this is sick, i love it. one of the more creative entries (not that they all don't have their certain magic). your voice is captivating as always, and the sounds you used are, well they're sinister. great job.

wow &mdash 09/29/08 - 04:56:11 PM
this sounds like one of those mash-ups from the UK with classic jazz records and some of the high-tech whizz-bang electronic equipment. That droning siren is GREAT. cool tune.

Cameron's comment about the title - cool and intriguing! In fact, the whole track is intriguing. Your vocal is really nice, and I like the music a lot. Great idea to reverse the loop. Very cool. Thanks for sharing. Nicely done. Peace.

When is your album release? &mdash 10/22/08 - 02:35:38 PM
This page is filled with superlatives already... and they are right! I think the key elements are (1) your vocal harmonies and (2) the contrast they make with the spooky background. More of these, please!
