Description:
Collabing with Steve has been a real treat for me. I grew up in awe of Gilmore, Beck, & Belew. Not just the great guitar work but their skill putting it together in the mix. I think my friend Tokai has done just that with this track. I think we started going for an "Animals/Floyd" type thing, but it generously morphed into something a little different. Many thanks to Steve for producing/writing/performing this tune. He makes it sing

Steve West - Guitars, Synths, Effects, Production

Tokai

Ktb - Synths, piano, drum/bass programming

You guys ... &mdash 09/27/08 - 11:13:54 PM
need to make this

m u c h l o n g e r.

You've got the beginning of an epic here. The punch up at 2:48 sounds like a starting point for blasting off, after a very "into the night" build. Anyway, everything sounds terrific. Dramatic. Excellent collab.

that'd be Steve-0 . I did one low synth pad, but all the effects, and additional synth goodies are Tokai's doing. Feter appreciate the kind words

Thank you my friend &mdash 09/28/08 - 04:20:04 AM
for passing another one of your fine tunes my way, we should have made it longer to incorporate the intro and the mess i got into trying to make it fit. The piano and keys you play are truly brilliant and beautiful.
Cheers m8. Looking forward to the next one.

the joy &mdash 09/28/08 - 01:45:52 PM
I get from these collabs is immense. Keeps me going. I really appreciate your open mindedness and sharing your talent. We'll have to jam in person some day :-)

groovy &mdash 09/28/08 - 05:07:09 AM
Must have been cool to jam along to this one.

The mood from chords/melody-lines gives a feeling of something serious going on, like a war... the marching snare drum around 02:00 adds to that feeling. If you are to make a longer version, maybe an added bridge with some lighter flavors could balance this feeling some...

You two show great musician skills and it's a thrill listening to you play:)

Bravo!

a break &mdash 09/28/08 - 01:52:02 PM
Thor, spot on you are. I totally envision the "darker" visuals. Maybe it'd be a good soundtrack for a battle sequence. Definitely if we were to tinker I agree a break of some sort. Right around the 3:30 mark to segue-way into something altogether different.

Vic, Floyd probably being one of my all time favorites. I was deeply saddened by the passing of Richard Wright. Thank you for the positive comment

Reminds ME... &mdash 09/28/08 - 09:21:14 PM
...of bits of Robert Fripp, somehow playing over Rick Wright and Steve Winwood...

Very Frippish tone and phrasing in spots, and much enjoyed...

Added with gratitude to iTunes for further enjoyment...

Ed, I'm glad you like it. Steve's (Tokai) playing combines the best elements of rock, progressive and art and still comes out wholly unique when he's done.

intrigue &mdash 09/30/08 - 07:42:41 AM
what a terrific pairing here, both in talent and music. Guitar work and piano work are superb for this... writing is quite dramatic... although I agree that since it is a short single themed piece, it feels like the intro to something else about to be unleashed right after this. Great builds, and the jazzy piano part actually does complement the giant Floydian guitar growling rather well (I almost typed "Wall".) It sort of gave me visions of a Jekyll & Hyde type thing, where somebody is fighting this unstoppable terrifying power that is sweeping over him. Maybe this can be the intro to "the real song" which you will work together on now? (smirk) Definitely had me listening intently all the way through.

Drakonis

wall &mdash 09/30/08 - 09:31:24 PM
Drak, I'm pleased to hear you didn't think the piano was out of place. I had some second thoughts on that part. I couldn't agree more that this would make a great prelude for something. I hope I can do some more like this. I think we play well together.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Its very much appreciated.

keys shine &mdash 09/30/08 - 09:25:26 AM
The keys that start around 1:28 are just, well, pretty. Love the way that they float over the heavier stuff. Bass programming is standout as well - terrific little stutter steps here and there. Lots of ear candy for the headphone inclined.

I'm floored &mdash 09/30/08 - 05:37:36 PM
This is stunning. As a huge Floyd fan, I think this has the spirit! Wonderful sound, and a great mix, with lovely playing throughout. The guitar just soars and dips, and fills the phones, and the piano adds an unexpected, wonderfully melodic angle. Amazing stuff. The drums and bass work perfectly, too. A great collab. Kudos to you both. Peace.

Wow. You guys work well together. A real blending of several genres in this...

Amazing guitar work by the good Mr. West. Excellent synth work and drum programming by Mr. Instant Karma.

I hope you guys ride again in the near future!

Be well!

So many great collabs out there &mdash 10/08/08 - 04:00:58 PM
I just came over from Craft/Sorenson/Racerat and now this. I was hooked on first reading with the Animals/Floyd referrence - but this has definitely gone even further into a different realm. Really well done - great guitars, keys, drums, production. Cool.
