industrial 1940 americana &mdash 10/05/08 - 04:20:50 PM
daylight ... sunrise ... punch clock and wheaties for breakfast. Or not ... what a nice quirkly beauty. I do love the scale contrast and the clock like rythem plays well against the movement of the instruments. Enjoyed ... very original!

Quite an interesting piece..... &mdash 10/05/08 - 09:39:25 PM
captivating, with dissonant notes and unusual rhythm.....I imagine the strings and brass as the street sounds, cars, traffic etc. I like it!

Thanks Enrique, &mdash 10/08/08 - 12:27:44 PM
Your own beautiful music is quite often joyful and uplifting I'm so glad that you found some pleasure in a darker sometime dissonant work.
Best,
Charlie

Different time period... &mdash 10/06/08 - 07:25:15 PM
...but the sliding in and out of dissonance brings to mind a west coast version "West Side Story".

There's a generous portion of Copland's hand in yours, sweeping the abandoned lots of a desolate section of the city...

Nice stuff, there, Charlie...cool theme.

A west coast version "West Side Story"? That's cool!
Thanks Bob for your always keen insights.

Both sides now, simultaneously! &mdash 10/12/08 - 08:12:52 AM
Nice pizz ostinato you have going there... when the bowed strings come in, it seems bitonal. Is it? Then the tonalities converge, then diverge again. Very cool. I like the way you handle dissonance here. Very nicely done. It has an interesting feeling of being both happy/jolly (which comes from the pizz. ostinato) and intense at the same time.

Great work here, as usual Charlie.

Thanks Clark, &mdash 10/13/08 - 11:12:31 AM
Yes this does slide into bitonality. It's not always planned but when I find myself in unusual sonic landscapes I try not to panic, I usually put on some hiking boots, get out the repellant and try to enjoy the trip.
And when I'm really lost I go to your very cool Composition Blog and try to figure out where the heck I am.
Best,
Charlie

I'm with Bob &mdash 10/13/08 - 05:35:21 PM
here - reminded me of 'West Side Story' too. Some of my all time favourite music, but then it lifted into something very original - I get Eastern influences amongst many other images. Very creatively different and a lovely listen. The production also sounds faultless to me.
Cheers

Thanks Len, &mdash 10/15/08 - 04:29:08 PM
Bernstein wrote some great music for that play and if you haven't already, check out his music for "On the Waterfront".
A true urban classic.

Unusual tonalities &mdash 11/20/08 - 09:00:38 PM
as others have mentioned. The pizz. strings hammering away under the bowed strings and winds are relentless, yet the legato treatment over the top has a very captivating flow. The bitonal treatment is a bit edgy, and would (will) be great leading up to the climactic scene of a movie.
