Description:
This is a collab a long time in the works but it was worth the wait and shows that when making music, two Pete's can be better than one. Smokey Bacon Jnr sent me the main riff and was able to take my boatload of barely congruous guitar parts to craft the following. Kudos to Pete for putting it all together, providing the sound engineer skills and anchoring the soul of this song.

Special thanks to Drew Roberts, a poet from the Bahamas who was the writer/vocalist of our little dittie.

And tons of gravy!

Is this what we can expect from the guitar new set up Pete_NB? You might need an ice pack to keep the computer from over heating! Screaming riffs!

And Smokey, you've got this serious Lou Reed thing going on - NYC era. I love what you've done here.

Great vocals, production and dastard lickage make this an easy fave/download.

I need an ice pack

Ice is for rum! &mdash 10/06/08 - 11:47:39 AM
Gravy is totally my favourite vegetable. We were back and forth with this song long before I got my new toy (Firebox) but it was used for a portion of this, while some of it was just plugged straight into the back of the mac. I'll be using that for the remainder of my future tunage until something better comes along.

Smokey pointed out that the vocals were actually done by the writer of the lyrics, and I had incorrectly attributed them to Smokey. Sorry Drew!

"Dastard Lickage". I love it!

Set up &mdash 10/06/08 - 01:43:23 PM
Most of my stuff was my Squier strat plugged straight into the Mac and using the Garageband emulator. Some of it was through my Presonus Firebox and once again into the GB emulator.

Smokey can give you his set-up if he likes but I believe he uses Guitar Rig.

Thanks for listening!

my set up &mdash 10/06/08 - 02:05:03 PM
I have a guitar plugged via an Audio Buddy into the back of my G5. In Logic Express I use Guitar Rig 3 for all my sounds. The bass on this track was done with Reason using the Electric Bass pack - I tried a straight bass guitar but couldn't get a clean enough sound, so the keyboards came to the rescue. Drums are Beta Monkey Metal samples... All the mastering etc was done in Logic.

It's a treat to be involved with a song when someone knows how to engineer so well. Smokey gets all the credit for composing and putting this together. You should check out his other stuff!

stop it! &mdash 10/08/08 - 10:44:54 AM
Thanks Pete, you're too kind!! But it would have sounded pedestrian without the scorching lead guitar giving it's ass a good kicking.

Some monstrous guitar tones here... &mdash 10/10/08 - 10:06:55 PM
...great riffing, great crunch, great interlacing lead bits...

This is the most 'songish' thing I've heard from Pete_NB, and I like it...

Little crit-lets, since I'm hoping you guys are going to do this again:

There are bits where this shouldn't be possible, I know, but the drums feel like they're not quite sync'd to the guitars...to my weird ears they sound like they're rushing the beat...

And I like the lyrics, but for me the sort of half-spoken vocal sits oddly on top of the main musical bed...

Like a little textbook of guitar sounds and approaches, though, and loaded with true guitar candy moments...

Ed

Astute as Always &mdash 10/14/08 - 09:20:27 PM
Ed,

The song-ish nature and the interweaving of lead parts is the positive influence of Smokey. Audio engineering has never been my focus or forte, but Smokey's riffs and compositional skills, and patience at the dashboard really gave rise to something that I think is pretty special. All I did was take some fun riffs and run roughshod over them like a beast, and Smokey made sense of it all.

We've got a rework in the wings, and you're spot-on crit-lets will be addressed.

Thanks for the listen and the advice.

Great tune! &mdash 10/20/08 - 11:56:49 AM
i like the guitars and the tune! Great work! I think maybe a reverb and a little closer mix of the vocals would make the vocal track not stand out so much...unless that is what you are looking for, then great job! :)

Glad you dig it. And thanks for the advice. We're waiting on someone to come back to us with a track or two on this to take it to the next level and we'll take your thoughts under advisement.

Thanks for tuning in!

Nice setting &mdash 10/22/08 - 05:24:37 AM
The guitar at the intro was outstanding. If I say the vocal was a little too much up front, would you be mad? (BTW, I really dig the vox.)

The guitar is miles beyond me.

Keep rockin' on, brother.

Dave

It was a blast doing my thing over Smokey's smokin' riffs. Amazing what a difference a musical effort can have when it's properly orchestrated. I've learned a bunch from this collab.

Thanks for the listen!

Great stuff &mdash 11/14/08 - 04:47:40 PM
BUT

Drums suck

Vocal too forward, and given it's nature you might want to try messing it up a bit with delays and distortion and suchlike.

Great groove, GREAT guitar, great potential
