Description:
Two things coincided to produce this song. I finally decided to try drop D tuning and I got a Line 6 Toneport GX. I bought the GX on a whim as I already have a great firewire interface but the GX comes with Gearbox which is a rather excellent software package. After playing around with the presets I found the one used here (called "Bad" after the U2 song) and started to put together this piece. It's rough and ready but I like it.

Crude works! &mdash 10/09/08 - 10:48:22 AM
Melodic riffing. Lovely plaintive vocal. BRAVO!

"Mercury Rising"...both literally and metaphorically...

Be well friend!

Very cool &mdash 10/09/08 - 04:55:43 PM
song mate. This is very well produced, written, sang, and performed. I would only point out that the guitars sound a tad out of tune. It might be an intonation thing cause they sound better higher up the neck. I might be wrong, but if it is it's a very simple fix at the shop. You can also learn to do it online, it really isn't rocket science lol. This is a great song that is on the threshold of becoming stellar. I really like the U2 feel about it. Thanks for your visit to my page.
Peace

Intonation.. &mdash 10/12/08 - 02:06:54 PM
.. is something I knew nothing of and now do. I've just restrung the guitar and, using internet guides, managed to get my 12 fret notes as close to the open strings as they'll go give or take a few cents. Wow the guitar sounds better all round. I had to mess with the action quite a bit, but it plays much sweeter now.
I've got the basis for a new song sorted so hopefully you'll hear the difference.
Thanks for the advice!

Great news &mdash 10/13/08 - 03:06:17 PM
Glad I could help. You should use a 12th fret harmonic to check it to. Just barely touch the string at the 12th fret and pluck it you should hear a chime or bell like tone. Use the three notes (harmonic, 12th, and open) to average it out. Hope to hear from you soon.

nice &mdash 10/11/08 - 12:15:40 AM
I liked the layered guitars with catchy melodies.
drums and vocal harmonies v. effective.song seemed to fade out slightly abruptly but this is a very minor quibble.
fun to bob my head while contemplating the extinction of humanity.

You, too. &mdash 10/11/08 - 07:22:01 AM
Like the jangly U2-ish guitars. You set a nice vibe here.

I really like it too. Just a nice little tune..not too rough. Let the vocals carry the song as well.

Good Musical Ideas &mdash 10/20/08 - 05:02:25 PM
This is a good song. The guitars, drums and bass are all well done.

In my mind the vocals could use more energy.

Good stuff PNC.

.. I have in fact re-recorded this vocal but I'm reluctant to upload it to MJ as multiple versions of the same song are a little annyoing without major changes. This is the original guide vocal and the new one is little more refined. If anyone wants me to upload it I will
