"It was a long time ago but to me just like yesterday", she said as she began her tale. "85 years ago on my fifth birthday." Closing her eyes, she continued her story,"My daddy had carved a dancin' doll for me, we didn't have much. He showed me how to make it dance and I said 'he dances just like you daddy', he hugged me close. He smelled like the dirt in the fields he worked so long in and the pipe he smoked. It was many hours later that they came, early in the mornin' pounding on the door. There were six or eight of them dressed in sheets carryin' torches. One talked real loud and asked my mama where daddy was. Mama tried t' chase'em out but they pushed past her into the bedroom and dragged daddy out. I ran to him and hugged his leg crying 'daddy, daddy, daddy,' and he spoke softly to me and said it would be OK. He smelled afraid. They took him away and mama and me watched through the open door as the torches grew dim. I never saw my daddy again. Mama died the next year and I went to live with my aunt in Detroit. I never could make that dancing man doll dance." She sat back in her wheelchair and fell asleep.
