also, i tried to abuse the loops compositionally.

around 3:00 a loop enters that just doesn't sound right towards the end of each repeat. i couldn't make it fit nicer, so i used it as an "ugly duckling" - it's to show how "everything's OK" just doesn't ring true.

then around 4:00, in a desperate attempt to salvage this with a happy ending (a la David Lynch), the flute loop comes in with a little major tonality to try to counter the unrelenting minor key built up so far. i think it ultimately fails to cheer up this sad tale, so it's a tragic ending.

	yo This beat was sick. Was this something you created from scratch? ie composed and noted/sequenced yourself? Or are their loops? When the Drums actually kick in it sounds like a loop. I couldnt get into the voice, lyrics seemed kind of amatuer, but dude that beat was tight. Let me know about the composition. glad you liked it. it's built out of seven orchestra loops that i modified to make them play together nice, and they are dropped in and out during the song, leading to the end where they are all up at once.

there are six drum loops modified and combined in various ways, again leading to the end where they are all up at once.

the vocals were done in one take with spaces between each line, and edited to remove the spaces to form continuous verses. i used the vocal transformer to drop the pitch three half-steps.

yeah, i do my best on vocals, but i've got lots to learn there.

this was all done in GarageBand

you did a nice job fitting the track together with the loops. Im not familiar with GB, i use reason4 w/cubase4 advanced. are those all GB loops or third party? ide like to retract my statement about the lyrics being amatuer. its not a lyrical track thats for sure but its not intended to be, so you did your part well. I took the time to read ( as suppose to just listen) and the structure is solid. the voice definatly needs work( as does mine! im working on delivery atm). but that will come in time and experience of course. i'll check out some of your other stuff when i get the chance

	. yes, all GB loops. i think they came from the Remix JamPack and Orchestra JamPack. (maybe also the Rhythm Section JamPack.) mixing and modifying loops is fun, but it lots of experimenting to make it come out reasonably good. give it try! Check out my latest song called Settle

Bill ... Honestly I think the lyrics work very well here. The backing track is very cool and it always amazes me how you can squeeze so much out of GB ... wow. Lyrics are fitting also from the stand point I don't feel you were striving to accomplish an inner city feeling here but more of a cerebral rap ... am reading too much into this here ? I think there is a story behind this. Anyway .... liked it a lot Bill !

this song is certainly not inner city, mostly because i know little about rap parlance. i was mostly after the rhythm on the backing beat, and the mood. and the vocal is very simple rhythmically since that's all i can handle. i meant no disrespect to true rap - this is just another musical experiment.

the "story" is an overlap of many things many people always worry about. this is mostly driven by the current economic turmoil and how it's adversely impacting many people. by using second person (you) i tried to create a strange sense of warning and perhaps even condemnation or accusation. it might also be fear of the future, or perhaps fear for our children's futures (imagine if the lyrics were addressed to a grandchild)...

the idea is that lots of things in life can happen to us that we have no control over (like getting sacked), but there can be disasters we bring upon ourselves (signing an unaffordable mortgage), and yet there are still things that we *can* try to change (striving to be personally accountable).

maybe it's also dancing around the AA's Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

there are references to sobriety, or lack thereof, although maybe that's simply a method of coping. or maybe it's a warning of the pitfall of trying to cope in that way: the coping itself becomes another problem.

but AA's prayer need not apply only to alcohol or drug problems. it's a sensible way to direct one's energy into the parts of our lives that we can make real changes.

or, i dunno.

Oh That Bed of Beats!!
I am an old skool hip hop lover....and this bed of beats iz off da chainz!! If I were DJing again and doing my Old School set of boogie beats, I would mix this tune with some Kraftwerk (I got to listen to my Kraftwerk collection to determine which one), but I would blend out of the Kraftwerk tune right into this one.

This is a great, laid back in da cut, chillaxin like a mofo, get ma groove on, head-noddin tune.

Here's this white, middle-aged Canadian's take on rap... as far as I know, it's supposed to be about what you know for real - whoever you are, whatever you do. What you know, what you feel, what you believe, what you know to be true and what you know to be a load of bull. Whether it's wrong or right is irrelevent - it's what you, as an individual, have become right here and right now. What's real.

I could be wrong - usually am - but having been a keen student of the DJ French Toast School Of Rap, that's what I've picked up. (Although, by that yardstick, I could rap about model railroaders and it would be real. Dumb and head-scratchingly pointless, but real.)

I've known guys like the one in this piece. For a while they were fun to be around, but the subtle resentment that gradually fills them and poisons their life poisons everyone around them. I watched one friend in particular wander into a world of his own making, torpedoed by schemes and shortcuts to success that all failed, and this piece really reminded me of him. Poignant. Sad.

The music is startling in its ferocity - although, from the first song I ever heard from you - "Break The Loop" from LIOLI 1 - you can deal out some pretty intense emotional energy in your music. This just works, and the bleakness of the landscape fits the scene of a guy who lives in delusions that someday things will be great, somehow, some way.... the happy little flute in his head that only he can hear.
