Description:
when i lived in london as a teenager, my friend used to play me some obscure tracks from pirate radio stations. Living in Brixton at the time i remember troubled times there and tried to understand what was going on by listening to these radio stations where they would talk about events and play tracks that reflected that period and it's troubles. I had some Malcom X tapes recorded from this time which i have lost over the years. I could never find the original artists so i went looking for the same sound bites i remembered and recorded them for this track. The track has a very different feel from how i recalled, but thats my slant on it i guess. Now i live in a city, that prides itself on history of The Romans, Celts, Saxons, etc. But no where in that history, unless you dig deep, does it reflect the slave trade, which Bath and Bristol was build on the back of. I find that astounding.
The only loops are some of the main drum parts.

atmospheric to the extreme. Its just too cool the way you integrate the audio clips. The bass is this deep rich underpinning to the whole picture. The synths are perfect, what are you using here?
tokai
Jon very kind of you. All the synths are logic software and some garage band instruments it is all the stuff i normally use. Cheers mate, thanks for your support.

......it's really frustrating when art this good goes unnoticed. I noticed this though.
Excellent job and keep 'em coming.

thanks for noticing this and commenting on it, nice one.

Like the varied textures you create here. The pauses and quite parts are very effective. The bass holds it all together well and the guitars and synths are woven in with the sound bits in a very crafty way. Enjoyed this one a lot.
Thanks

this track has many layers and could have gone in many directions, i tend to like music that has both loud and soft bits. cheers

A definite Bristolian vibe coming through here - Massive Attack, maybe Tricky as well (is he from Bristol?). Whatever - it's beautifully dark and punchy, sinister and groovy - I love that bass sound you've got here.
Sent a shiver down my spine when I heard the "till you let me dine" sample - I had a 12" single years ago which I think was called "No Sell Out" - by Malcolm X (but could be wrong) - maybe that was the same thing you were listening to? Great stuff anyway!
tokai
thanks, i know that tune, do you still have it? love to own that again. As for the Bristol massive, that sound means so much to me. What i would give to spend some time with those guys to learn some of their secrets. Tricky, apparently he goes into the studio and gives a load of strange requests to the sound engineers who shake their heads, but are surprised when his ideas work. Thanks for the compliments.
Powerful piece, Tokai. You've definitely mastered the technique of weaving together music and the spoken voice. The background guitars add extra personality. Love the rumbling bass track. Seriously good.
tokai
always good to hear from you... i can't seem to make tracks without some sort of vocal sample. If only i could sing. Cheers

I like it when its says I got a plate infront of me. Your strat realy pulls this in. Just right not over done . Cool way to end it with the git. Very cool!
tokai
that bass is right in your face. I have turned it right down as it was too much. I have never used that type of bass sound before, i like it, but it is over powering. Cheers.
SmokeyVW
great mood
like how you build it up and break it down
thanks
tokai
thanx for the words, very kind of you.

Excellent sense for mixing the various guitar and bass riffs with the subtle synths. Very organic, raw and with an underlying, uncompromising dark tone. Especially like the intro. The drums/percussion, although you blend them extremely well into the mix, could have a little more transparency, sometimes the sounds get a little brittle when a loop is slowed down. Overall you show a ton of talent here, I'll come back checking for more!
tokai
thank you for pointing that out, and you are right! i do have a problem using midi fills. Every time i use them they sound hollow, and i have added all i know to try to cover this up, but you noticed. Even the delay this time does not cut it. Ummm, i will keep trying. Cheers
ted23
Love the beats in this.
The bass line makes this for me, has a haunting slightly suspicious/paranoid vibe to it which is great. It's a tune that stays with you long after you've stopped listening to it... In a very good way.
tokai
Thank you man, it is good to have new talent here..

This is incredible. I love that your pieces always have messages. I love how you build and then let go - bringing the guitars and percussion in strong and then pulling it all back for the important sound bites you've added. Great beats and haunting guitar work. I think this would work well with a really big instrumental ending, something to really get your attention and keep it long after the song is over. This is a great piece of composition and production. Thanks for sharing this!
tokai
thank you mate for your appreciation in writing a long comment to this song. I guess i can not seem to leave a track as an instrumental anymore, i just have to give it that bit more interest. If i have an idea first it helps me write the piece, i would rather be working with vocalistĀ”
Elevator_Funk
Your songs are always top notch. Great layering of tracks, excellent vibe. Your guitar is just right in the mix and not overbearing. I love it.
tokai
you know you where one of the first real discovery's i made here at the JamsĀ” Cheers
