Description:
Sit back and relax 'cus it ain't rock and roll! Just under six minutes, slow and gentle. Sixteen tracks altogether, I've used the Albino and Zebra soft synths, with four tracks of "African Voices". No percussion. I haven't used the keyboard in this one, but have pencilled in most of the notes. Only one loop used, a harp thing.

"Fell" is an old Norse word meaning "mountain", hence "fells" are the mountainous parts of Northern England where the Vikings once lived. They aren't very high, compared to many mountain ranges, but are quite spectacular. I must go back there soon.

The picture is a view of Derwentwater, Keswick, Skiddaw & Blencathra, from Cat Bells in the Lake District.

Hope you like this tune and thanks for stopping by. :)

Simple but evocative of the north &mdash 10/12/08 - 04:29:59 AM
Not sure what it was about this Dave, but it reminded me of the time we were living in Mellor, on the edge of the Peaks District NP in 76.

Very relaxed and relaxing. Clear as a bell.

Greetings from Oz,
Neil

Thanks Neil &mdash 10/12/08 - 04:37:34 AM
I'm an hour in either direction from The Cumbrian Lakes and the Derbyshire Peak District, but haven't been to either in ages! Lovely places too - maybe we shall go for a visit later - the sun is shining here today!

If you know Mellor, we lived just opposite The Oddfellows pub in Moor End Rd.

Lovely sounds &mdash 10/12/08 - 05:20:17 AM
Great piece of music, lovely and relaxing. Good use of the vocals to create the ambience, and the soft synths give a sense of flying, and the bass is very powerful. I can hear the DubStation at work here :-). Really nice Dave.

Yes - the good old "DubStation" - best £30 I ever spent! I'm going to try a do a tune without using it, one of these days!

Beautifully &mdash 10/12/08 - 06:17:26 AM
descriptive of that lovely part of our lands set with it's own special grandeur. Very, very peaceful and magical/meditative..... and boy are you dedicated by pencilling in all those beautiful notes..... love that slow bass that seems to step with giant strides taking us through the landscape. This really is lovely, cheers M

Many thanks Mo &mdash 10/12/08 - 06:23:47 AM
Yes, you are nearer than me to all that beauty! My loved one didn't want to venture out today alas, and I don't want to go on my own.

As for pencilling, well, it's the synths that make the noises really. Pencilling is the easy bit.

Take it easy!

Oh Boy! &mdash 10/12/08 - 06:26:09 AM
This is simply the soundtrack to one of the peak experiences of my life. When Interrailing (kind of train hitch hiking) through England in the early 80s I arrived in Keswick one afternoon and immediately after settling in my B&B set out for Skiddaw on foot. I think it was 6 p.m. by then but I made it all the way to the top, and what a view! All the landscape was absolutely bathing in golden sunshine. I reallly mean golden! I saw all the way across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man to the west and Scottland up in the north and a lot of, well, fells to the east and approximately the view in the picture above to the south. It was freezing cold up there, so I just had an apple, added a stone to the height of Skiddaw and went down to Keswick again. Great!

So thanks a lot for taking me along this memory lane!

See you next year in Keswick ;-)

/Henke

Hm, &mdash 10/12/08 - 06:31:42 AM
After downloading I can see the artwork in a bigger version and now I see that "Big" Skiddaw is behind the "a" in dreaming and not where the camera is, so the description above is not perfect, but you get the picture, I hope... /H

Aha! &mdash 10/12/08 - 06:38:24 AM
You recognise the view then! It's taken from the other side of Derwentwater, from a small mountain called Cat Bells. Skiddaw is quite a challenge, a real slog. It's just a featureless mound that seems to go on for ever. But, as you say, the views from up top are brilliant. If you can see anything that is! You were lucky - it usually rains up in the Lake district. :(

Nice of you to listen Henke - thanks. :)

sunlight &mdash 10/12/08 - 08:03:13 AM
it seems to convey majesty. there is a repeated colour pattern. it is waves of light. perhaps it is waves of hills. the music is beautiful. it takes the mind far. northern england would be worthy of a visit. it is a breath taking photograph. the music is far too short, and must be listened to again. thank you. 0x0

Kind comments indeed. I just noticed that I'd posted this tune twice somehow. Don't quite know how that happened, but I've deleted one of them!

This is what you should hear &mdash 10/12/08 - 12:41:23 PM
in a dream where you are standing on top of a mountain peak and you slowly turn completely around like a ballerina in a music box. Loved it. Thanks.

What a lovely mental image you provide - brilliant!

Char &mdash 10/12/08 - 06:07:31 PM
Quite coincidentally, a "char" is a type of fish, rather like a trout or salmon, which can only be found in the Northern lakes surrounded by the fells of this tune. There you go! :-)

Soothing &mdash 10/12/08 - 05:04:43 PM
Enjoyable soundscape. Worked together with the kind of patience that makes good ambient music.

Thanks

I'm glad you were soothed! I've grown to like proper ambient music more and more as the years have rolled on. [Many people upload tunes which they call "ambient", that aren't really, in the truest sense of the word. But hey! What's in a genre!]

It's nice to be able to contribute, in a small way.

Thanks again. :-)

Lovely, Dava. &mdash 10/13/08 - 10:58:32 AM
Always nice to hear music inspired by things Viking, although I doubt that your typical Viking would have the patience to listen to a true ambient piece like this, what with pillaging and all.

What's up with the dissonance at 2:35, mixed in with what is otherwise a simple work of perfection?

Very lush sounds. More, please.

Dissonance &mdash 10/13/08 - 12:11:43 PM
I know - it was a bounce blip; only appeared after I'd bounced the tune down. But I sort of liked it, so left it in. Maybe I should get rid? The second bounce had the proper note. Soft synths have minds of their own sometimes, don't they?

As you know, "Ambient" is now one of my favourite listening genres. It's very uplifting when people comment about the "ambience" of something I've made myself, so I thank you for doing so.
