Everything to lose - (Gm Blues)
Recommendation: This is best experienced in headphones nice and loud! It has a deep solid beat that needs to be felt and there is lots of stuff going on which works extremely well in the headphones!
This is a kind of funky rock piece based around a Gm blues progression. I recently got a new guitar toy... A Gibson Les Paul Robot... In my few hours of playing it and getting to know it I came up with this pattern and really enjoyed how it sounded and felt. So I laid down the primary guitar track. I purposefully went for a little of a live kind of loose jam type feel.
I took a lesson from Mr. VicHolman (one of the real masters here at MacJams!) and laid in some drums manually. In the end I actually spent a great deal of time optimizing them for the sound I was looking for! (a drummer I am not!!!) Next I coordinated the bass with the drum track and things began to fall into place but I still wasn't sure where things were going yet. I also had no name for this tune... It was saved on disk as "Gm Blues".
I started to work on the lyrics and realized that recently I have been watching the world around me and becoming a little alarmed at how things are going, feeling a little trapped in the rat-race circuit. The lyrics blossomed out of these thoughts and the fact that at the end of the day when I see my wife and son, somehow the problems of the world are just not that big anymore.
This time I listened to my good MacJams friend Mr. LenGold and decided to just let go on the vocals. (Thank you so much Mr. Gold for the numerous votes of confidence on my prior songs!) I'm no Micheal2 or McKenzie and probably never will be but I just let go and sang and for the first time I'm actually pleased with the vocals and the harmonies. The harmonies drove me nuts... I kept forgetting how I inflected things, where I paused and it took like 9,999 takes to get a tight harmony track... well tight for me! I'm sure Mr. Micheal2 does this kind of thing his sleep! :-) But for me it was a lot of work! I can still pick out *MANY* flaws and it took a lot of takes and retakes to get it where it is now but I consider this a significant step in the right direction with vocals.
With that bare bones track pieced together I was really not sure if this had enough to really continue with. So I sent a rough draft off to Gail, DavisAmerica, Magnatone, EEFliess and a few others asking... "What do you think? Is it worth it!?" The resounding YES responses I got back kind of floored me... I figured this so far was just a mediocre fool around track but guess my MJ friends thought it had potential.
So I set about adding full sound bed and adding in various accents, cleaning up mistakes etc. As much as I can play guitar, I don't have a great feel for lead solos so I sent out a blanket request for help on that. I also wanted to get a more jazzy keyboard feel so I asked DavisAmerica to wave his magic wand over the track and that he did!
Gail seemed perfect to accent my somewhat weak vocals so I asked her to back me up. As usual in my experience her take fit PERFECTLY! A set of perfectly harmonized vocals that fit right in and added hauntingly good echo sound!
The result is better than I could have imagined. I hope you enjoy the listen as much as I have enjoyed the creation of this piece! It is different than any other piece I've tried and it opened up new avenues of ideas!
On this piece there are:

Lyrics:
Everything to lose - Gm BluesMRH 2008
Every time that I looked around in this world
My inner fears start to unfurl
I see us running wild
Living life in a violent style
As if we all have nothing to lose
Every time I look around in this place
I see us all running in a rat race
Running there and doing that
Forgetting this but remembering that
And it takes everything we have to survive
Every time I look inside of myself
I see the things I left on the top shelf
I wonder if I should bring them down
Open them up and spread them around
They might truly be the best parts of me
Every time I look into your face
I'm reminded to quickly slow my pace
Its time to stop rushing around
Because I know that I've finally found
The best thing this world has to offer me.

So very very much... Now go and take care of your sister and make sure she knows I'm thinking of you and her.
You are an amazing person Mr. Jack and I'm honored to know you none the less play music with you!
The Infinites
I am getting that Peter Gabriel voice again!
Really fine song - I love the whole piece, the back beat is great then the whole song just blooms then your guitar comes in. Absolutely nothing wrong with your voice, really suits the music.
I like the 'quickly slow' word linkage. Great guitar work all the way thru - I just love this. Carlos who? Pure Santana at the end.
DL & on the iPod
Thanks for free music of such a high standard.

much Jim! Please download and enjoy!
The Infinites
iPod is updating now....
Cheers!

drakonis
As I mentioned earlier to you, this has sort of a 60s vibe, I love the singing/harmonies/lyrics... almost Moody Blues-meets-Three Dog Night in spots. Nice organ, Jack! Gail does really dabble delicious harmonies over this. Nice smooth guitar & bass work throughout... but mostly, this is a great bit of writing, and clean mixing there! You all should be very proud of this gem!
ttfn,
Drakonis
MarkHolbrook
Thank you so much my friend!
Jack rocked the organ... Gail made the vocals... Josh and Eddie smoked the guitars... lets see that in the heck did I do... hummm not much I think! :-)
Char
If God had this much help, he would've created the world in a couple of hours. You have great friends with great talent. Absolutely, it is the people we love and who love us who make life worth living. You sing with a voice that reminds me of a famous singer, whose name I can't place now, sorry. He made a lot of money with that voice. It is a great voice.(Peter Gabriel, but someone else too.)
I think your experience with Big Finish opened you up to the possibilities available and my goodness, this deserved such a dynamic treatment! Wow! Thanks!
MarkHolbrook
You are the best. Thank you so much and you know the crew on this one... All the regulars... Jack, Gail, Josh, Eddie... Is this a virtual band!? Perhaps...
Thanks for your comments and I hope you enjoyed the tune!
Char
Steely Dan. Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Eddie caught it.
gail60
You really did a wonderful job here writing and performing this song. This is a very catchy song with lots of heart in it and I was thrilled that you asked me for some added harmony. I was honored to be a part of this for sure but believe me Mark....You did not need my help, it was perfect as it was. I enjoyed all the guitar work and keyboards and your vocals were spot on! Kudos Mark and to everyone else that added to this. Great job!
MarkHolbrook
you Ms. Gail... Your harmonies are eerily great... I could not have asked for more. Thank you for making the time to work with me and thanks again for your praise on the song!
After the intermediate versions you sent me I must say, this worked out great. Excellent work my friend. And you voice was perfect for this. You sing much better than you give yourself credit for. Now if you want to hear sandpaper rubbing cement or fingernails on a chalkboard voice, have me sing something for you ;-D
Jim
MarkHolbrook
Ok I'm gonna start working on a piece and I'll send you a Mac Audio interface I have and we will get the Baze on vocals...
Ya!! I'm stoked now!
Thanks so much though for stopping in for a listen and the comments!
Macaudion
Me likey likey! It's as groovy as groovy gets!
Ever wonder why it can oftentimes require so much in efforts to create a product that is to somehow reflect, "what is simple"... Quite a few contributions from a respectable lot of MJRs. There's also a sizable list of attributing factors to make what sounds to be, a simple groovy little piece.
It's kind of a soundtrack for how I've been feeling more often then i care to admit to. Thinking that I'm either just getting older, more lame or simply, content.
Nice writing, arranging and performing. .Really dign' it!
Thanks, Mark and the bunch! Macca
MarkHolbrook
for dropping in and the comment. Well we all feel it happening and right now the world is tightening its grip on many of us... Sometimes you just gotta look at the small things... my wife and son are pretty much my life.
Mark
Relic67

Guitar solos really great too. well done folks!
MarkHolbrook
Thank you so much! Josh (Apokafunk) just ripped on the guitar solos... no doubt and what more can be said about Gail and the harmonies...

MarkHolbrook
I'm glad you enjoyed the song and lyrics!
apocafunk
what a song! I'm proud to have been a part of it. this song caught me from the first 'bare bones' listen, and has been repeating in my head since (which is the sign of a great/funky groove). thanks so much for giving me the chance to work on one hell of a song! great job by all involved!
MarkHolbrook
Your guitar work just rocked dude! I'm sorry I asked for the second set as the first one just smokes... Thanks so much my friend and if there is ever anything I can do to help you out just drop me a line!
kristyjo
Lyrics popped out for me, then I noticed your voice (very smooth) then your guitar work. Kudos on all of it.
MarkHolbrook
Wow... smooth voice! Not normal for me but I did try very hard! I'm really glad you enjoyed the lyrics!

Vic Holman
this sounds great Mark. Has a cool 60's vibe. I'm all smiles on this.
hey, maybe setting up the drums took some time, but it's worth it.
vocals and harmonies are really great as well.
great solo, but it still takes a person to play a robot guitar. lol
MarkHolbrook
These drums have you written all over them my friend! But I'm sure you could have done lots better! I wanted a very consistent but groovy drum and I think I got it.
After I had the drums in I still didn't like how they sounded so I ended up with LOTS of EQ on different parts and echo on others... It was a mess for a while.
Thanks so much for dropping in and taking a listen and the time to comment.

Big Time. These vocals are fantastic as is the rest of this wonderful song/production. On my second listen now and it just gets better and better. Lovely contributions from everyone else. You have a massive hit on your hands - congratulations. I am really pleased to think that I might have helped to give you the confidence to do this.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers

MarkHolbrook
Again... thank you so much for the votes of confidence. For years I hated the sound of my vocals and even when our band practiced most didn't like my singing so I shut it down. I think the problems were confidence, tightening up etc...
On this piece I took about 5 takes on the main vocal (left ear) and finally got one where I said, hey... that's pretty good!. So I locked it in, eq-ed it a little then started on the harmony... OH MY GOD... 9,999 takes later I had one that I kind of liked... How do these people like Micheal2 do it!?
Anyway I feel like I've taken a step forward and it definitely feels good. Thanks so much again!!!
Peter Bauckham
Really good song Mark - and an all star cast. Top notch in every way. Perfect!
Peter
MarkHolbrook
Thank you so much! Coming from you this means a lot! I'm really glad you enjoyed the tune!

Nice one, Mark. Alan Parsons Project feel here.

This turned out so GREAT, Mark! These additions are terrific, and your original sounds come shining through. You're too much - what am I doing on the list of people who helped you? I said "cool!" LOL - great song Mark - congratulations!
MarkHolbrook

Thank you for listening and being there!
Rocha Malhada
great collaboration here, nice work on the mix, vocals and instrumentation.

MarkHolbrook
much Harold. Glad you stopped by for a listen and comment!
SmokeyVW
excellent vocals, lyrics, guitar work
for me, this harkens the doors, traffic, west indian girl, the LA sound of the late 60's, and the British invasion.
excellent tune
thanks
MarkHolbrook
Mr. Smokey!
I'm really glad you enjoyed the track!
PrototypeEightyOne
nice guitar work and your voice is actually pretty good i wish i could sing like that! hense why i took up rap lol :P (jk). Very doors-ish, awsome track. Drums are tight 2. You in a band or did you do all of this yourself?
MarkHolbrook
Nope this is all me along with some good help from some top notch MJers...
I always thought I couldn't sing either and this was the track that kind of got me thinking... maybe... I'm still not a great singer but this one worked.
Thanks for the all the wonderful comments.
futzpucker
Well done by all. This is a very enjoyable song. I had a great time jamming with it.
Congratulations to all connected with this very cool piece of music.
MarkHolbrook
Thank you so much for the listen and the comment!
I'm glad you enjoyed the piece! Can't wait for your next masterpiece!
kickliquid
Nice, it reminds me of some 60's to 70's psychedelia. Very laid back and cool. I'd like to hear some parts turned up, maybe not gain necessarily but maybe the EQ on the high end maybe to add some presence either than that, its good, Good Job
MarkHolbrook
I will take that in to account for the next mix.
Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment!
dajama
This is very cool. What a great groove. The sound is excellent (Great warm vibe - I couldn't agree more on the phones - it sounds great) and I really love the lyrics - great expression of a wonderful view of the world. The instrumentation is great - love the solo, and the percussion is spot on. Great vocal performance - and great backing vocals, too - and what a terrific overall vibe this song has. This is truly one of your best, Mark. Great song and wonderfully realized. Kudos, my friend. Nicely done. Peace.
MarkHolbrook
Thank you so much! This means a ton coming from you!
I am still rocked by your amazing vocals in the BigFinish project... wow oh wow can you sing and in this song I decided I'd do my best but frankly I'll never have a voice with the resonance and beautiful tone like yours!
Thanks so much for taking the time to listen and comment!
egobandit
and deep bows a spectacular piece of music from the soul. MJ's is a great place all the effort from everyone who helped you proves that. exCELLENT all around to you and everyone who helped you!!!!!!!
MarkHolbrook
Mr. Bandit!
I appreciate the comment very much. We had a ball putting this together. I think Micheal2 said it best:
It's hard to sound bad in this company!
kassia
Mark, this is fabulous! Lyrics and composition are really great. I LOVE your vocals on this. You got some great help for this one, and brought it all together flawlessly. I've listened to this several times today and it's just really a killer tune. Great job, Mark! And thanks for sharing it!
MarkHolbrook
Thanks so much... I honestly got a little worried about you... I hadn't seen or heard much of you and figured you were busy and hoped you hadn't forgotten about us here at MJ!
Thanks for listening and thanks for your support!
Mckenzie
i'm so sorry it took me this long to get hear, but you were NOT kidding. This is amazing. How did you get that sound on your vocals? Stereo? Doubled up? Whatever it is, it works amazingly. It's also such a polished production, i cant find any floors in it. I played this quite loud on my system (my headphones have packed in) and everything seemed perfectly balanced. For me its the drums and vocals that shine in this one. I find it so hard to get a decent drum sound on my pieces, but thats obviously not the case here. That extra time spent has payed dividends. Dont get me wrong, the solo's are fantastic and the bass is really tight sounding, i just particularly like the vocals and drum beat. By the way;
"because i know that ive finally found the best thing the world has to offer me"
is a great line. Great songwriting. I'm really pleased you brought this to my attention, it now downloaded and fav'd.
Thanks
now im off to hear some of your other stuff!!
MarkHolbrook
McKenzie... I fear you'll be disappointed by my other stuff. This is certainly my best effort so far.
Thanks for the wonderful comments. Yes lots of time was spent on various things but in the end it just came together and it does sound and feel nice I think.
MarkHolbrook
I should answer your questions... sorry about that!
Vocals: Well the left vocal is the main. That one took me about 5 takes to get it sounding like it did. The right vocal... ahem... um... well... Let me just say the project file is almost 6 GB in size and most of it is all the mistakes and retakes on the second vocal.
My problem was I couldn't seem to remember how things were inflected, paused etc... Anyway I finally got one that was tight (hundreds it seems of takes later!). I then spent a ton of time EQing both the left and right vocals to sound different. I also added a stereo delay using a different delay rate for left and right. That really filled them out.
The drums are logic pro 8 studio tight kit. I manually coded in each section playing it over and over till I got the right groove I was looking for. Then more EQ time. I wanted to accent the snare and the ride symbol so I have variable EQ in the project which brings those things forward when they are played. (track automation).
The bass is really pretty simple and I just made it work with the drums.
I'm glad to answer any other questions!
haribo
funky groove, atmospheric old-pop vibe in the vocal delivery (but never out-dated, it sounds stylish)
i find the lyric so relatable, the moment one finds 'the one', the rat race becomes meaningless (but when that fantasy ended for me, the rat race starts again until i found the next one LOL >_
MarkHolbrook
much Haribo for the listen and the comment. The lyrics came out of thinking about what a mess things are right now.
You are right... take one look at your loved ones and the rat race is just not so bad.
CraizeeMusic
I like the vocals and the guitar chord progression actually reminds me of some 1960s music. Very smooth, well done. Kudos!
MarkHolbrook
Thanks so much for the listen and the comment! I'm really glad you enjoyed the tune!
craft
well done by all of you
MarkHolbrook
much sir! I'm really glad you enjoyed the piece!
jiguma
Great sound overall - you must be getting the idea of production methinks! Nice collab everyone - the sound is like a band. I like (nearly) all the instrumentation and singing too.
Not crazy about the bass track though - it sounds too rigid, and holds the song back from swinging for me. The fact that the bass is the one thing you didn't mention in your description makes me wonder how you did it - sounds like it might be midi. I think this could be much better if you sorted out the bass.
The drums are particularly well done.
Overall a great post.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil
MarkHolbrook
I responded to your note! Exactly the info I need!
Thanks again!

Nice work by all involved.

MarkHolbrook

Hey Mark, love this song. Pyschedelic, J.J Cale (with a higher voice). Sorry for the comparison, but that's what came to mind.
MarkHolbrook
Thanks so much for the listen and welcome to MJ. Hope you are enjoying it here!
ted23
Really enjoyed that from beginning to end.
Cant fault it.
Going in for a second listen......

I'm really glad you enjoyed the tune. On my 500th listen I think and I can certainly hear some flaws. But hey it was still lots of fun.
lavalamp
...favorite one you've posted. It's very good in all aspects. "Smooth", is the best word I can use to describe it.
Very generous of you to give those guys so much credit.
Great job Mark. Sorry I was so late.

No problems on being late, just thanks that you came on in for a listen! I'm so far behind it is not funny!

This song does have a '60's feel to it.
I really liked the drums too. Good job!
MarkHolbrook
I did spend a fair amount of time not only on getting the drums programmed in but also on EQ to make them sound like I wanted. I'm really glad you enjoyed the song!
Roxylee
This is superlatively superb, Mark. All of you who added to it, did a perfect job. Everything sounds great!!

this has a nice kinda late 60's haight ashbury kinda groove to it....very mellow lead vox and harmonies. Good stuff!

With that all-star talent list, it seems you have everything to Gain!!!
Impeccable.
Congrats to you with this upload!!

I was the odd man out with the little tiny amount of talent!
I'm glad you enjoyed the tune! Thanks for coming in for a listen and comment!
TracyVosh
so buy this! This is beautiful Mark. You put a hell of a lot of work into this and it shows (or sounds) - amazing. I will definitely keep comin' back for more.

LunaTrick
Lovely singing... great arrangement... stellar production. Thoroughly enjoyed!
MarkHolbrook
Mr. Trick! I had a lot of help on this one. I did the majority of the instruments and vocals but had lots of friends to listen and say... er no... do it over. Hee hee...
Then I added them to the final with their work. So it was a kick to do. Thanks so much for listening and commenting!
Diviner
but then what do you expect from this super group. You are right it sounds great with headphones. The music is really good, the lyrics are well written and sung. Nice one, enjoyed esp the guitar noodling.
MarkHolbrook
Glad you came in for a listen! And I'm glad you liked the tune. Ya there was lots of help! The "gang" really helped to round it out.
Bob Rodgers

Had to check this out after your newest post. Not disappointed at all. Great vocals again and really like the lyrics. Thanks for the download
MarkHolbrook

Joe Brady
Nice job by all involved; and quite an impressive list of collaborators.
I really identified with your lyrics, and as previously mentioned, the sound is incredibly comfortable for the ear, no work at all. Nicely done.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the tune!
Paranoid Android
I like the overall sound. It seems like you might've been singing really close to the mic so you don't project as much as you could've. I think if you backed up a bit and sang a little louder, it would sound a lot more solid.
The vocal style reminds me of modern Roger Waters or Eric Clapton a bit.
Good work!
MarkHolbrook
I'm no singer and I have a lot to learn about breathing, projecting, etc. As I mentioned the first track took about 6 takes. The harmony... well um... the project is like huge so you can imagine. It was tough.
Thanks for coming in to listen and comment!
HolleyHall
This song is way cool! very 60-70's!! VERY nice mix! Holley :)
MarkHolbrook
Thanks so much! I'm really happy you came in for a listen and I'm super glad you enjoyed the tune and mix!
BossHook
song writing, mix is flawless to me on phones. The arrangement with the cool vocal work reminds me of some great styles of the 60s like the Association, the Rascals, and the Bay area scene. Great work by everyone.
MarkHolbrook
Thanks so much. All these comments from you are like gold in the bank! I'm glad you came in for a listen!
J.A.Stewart
Definitely has a breezy 60s feel. Did, indeed, bring those Turtle boys to mind.
Nicely done by all. ;)

Thank you so much! Ya it was a ton of fun for sure. It is one of those tunes that really catches you!
Jayrodd
Obviously lot of effort put in here. I like the whole groove of it. Hard to pin one era or genre on it, which makes it that much more enjoyable. excellent vocals and guitar work. Nice talent.
MarkHolbrook
Well ya there is a lot of talent on this song... All I did was play guitar and sing a little it was the rest of the group that really pulled it off!
davisamerica

It has everything it needs. The song is well constucted and the performance leaves no room for improvement. Well done - may I also say, - quite British in some respects.
MarkHolbrook

RyanHolbrook

Sounds terrific in the phones as you suggested Mark. All very good but I particularly love the feel of the guitar solo when it comes in.
Great stuff!
Moviz
instrumentation giving that 'running around and around' feeling and the vocals are spot on.... love the harmonies and the arrangement. Great work by all on this... giving it a very professional sound, cheers M

glad you included it in you Personal Best, cause it belongs on the list.
Great lyrics and production on it. Love you vocal and the back tracks fit it so well. Also noticed two other things I like, your harmonies and the lead guitar's tone and the playing.
Great song my friend
