Description:
I was reading a lot of books about austerity in Britain, especially George Orwell's ' The road to Wigan pier' and a few things on how unemployable men were drafted in to fight in the war just as cannon fodder. A lot of the lyrics still feel relevant for modern times. I nicked the first line off a George Orwell poem. I wrote the rest.
Lyrics:
Upright corpsesstill phazed and confused
Sleepwalking stupor
Beaten and bruised
Classified as an F4
Unfit for service
Drifting around
Just below the surface
Stay still forever
(lambs to the slaughter
dead in the water)
Unwanted unneeded
Surplus to requirements
A drain on resources
Lifetime of retirement
Just enough education
to sign your name
All sense of cognition
has gone down the drain
Stay still forever
(lambs to the slaughter
dead in the water)

What a wonderful song. I love the tone of your vocals, your guitars are nigh on perfect and the use of strings/atmosphere is excellent. Add that to the interesting subject matter and you have a real winner. If the Manics had produced this we'd be hearing it all day long on national radio.
Top class.

You read my mind.
I big-headedly thought it was the best song the Manics had never recorded.
I was aiming for something akin to 'if you tolerate this..' along the way.

I really like the acoustic sound with that slight pan. The 'dead in the water' backing is well done and appropriate.
You have a well constructed tune here, catchy, but not poppy. The bass notes at the end was a nice surprise. Lyrics are poignant and not schmaltzy; the subject matter might have made a lesser song-writer drift into the overly sentimental department; you've kept it real; short lines, but very focused. Good imagery in your story telling.
Your singing is easy on the ears, but not bland - good rock vocal without being 'shouty'. Again, DL'd & straight to iPod.
Like it a lot. THanks for posting.

For your comments.
I didn't think you could be smaltzy with a subject like that.
I tried to keep it succinct..but could have written an essay trying to explain the thoughts behind the song.
It was actually a visit to Tooting Broadway that got the ball rolling.
Who would've thought it
Thanks for dropping by

This is really great. Who would've imagined that Ian Astbury was here at MacJams?! Your voice is powerful on this one and the lyrics are well written. I also like your combined guitar sounds and the dark strings alongside it.
Thanks for the download, King.

Thank you Mr.Five arms.
Ian Astbury?
Must have been all those hours singing along to the Cult.

Tried to nick Billy Duffys Gretch white falcon. No chance ;-)
