Description:
This was an experiment I did on Logic Express with the trigger finger that I just bought, was trying to see what I could do in a waltz time.
Lyrics:
i try hard just to be a good parentmy child deserves all my best
i can bathe her and feed her and love her
and give her the best that I have
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
and my father he worked all his life
he slaved every day for his kids
yet my mother was never quite family
she felt like a childhood friend
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go
ooh ooh ooh ooh
it's time to let it go

Whats a trigger finger?
michael2
thanks for listening. a trigger finger is a thing that m-audio makes that is basically 16 little pads that trigger MIDI events. it's meant to tap out rhythms and beats, but i have gotten some neat sounds by using instruments instead of drums. cost me $149, still learning it, but there is an awful lot of things you can do with it (triggering samples,effects,parameters,etc...).

Yu talent music always amazed me ...what a bass line !!
perfect singing work as well ...the piano made a reall
sphere to it ..the hooo behind ahh man ...one of your

LunaTrick
Great singing and harmonies - Good message too!
Relic67
great sounding piece.
always nice to escape from the "tyranny of four"
I'm going to restrain my curiosity about the trigger finger since I have probably spent enough on gadgets to cover the next few years (maybe longer with impending economic collapse)...
those drumbeats sounded so good though...

for listening. i really like the trigger finger better than banging out beats on a keyboard, although it's taking a little getting used to. still getting the hang of Logic, and I can hear a bunch of weird things in this mix (like I accidentally cut off the ending). thanks for the listen, glad people seem to approve of this song.

by listening to new music. To me a trigger finger is what you use with a gun, but now I know better. Thanks for the education Mike.
Nice little tune here my friend. Interesting lyrics and a very soft sound to the whole track. Like the way you got around the rhythm limitations of loops by using the trigger finger, very cool. Bass sounds smooth and lovely on this as does the singing.
Nice track Mike, thanks for sharing the track and the info on the trigger finger.
Be well and be cool,
Ed

Michael, you write such great songs. This just dances/swirls/envelopes. The harmonies and vocals are outstanding. Theres like ten tunes in here, they're all excellent and I'm on cloud 9

are a unique talent deserving of wide recognition.I hear echoes of Lennon, Elliot Smith,Dylan, and lots of other "deep" musicians in your music.Keep posting- I'm never disappointed when I see that you have a new song!
lavalamp
You sound like Cobain singing an Elliot Smith song, with Roger Waters looking on.
F*ckin' excellent M2

I hadn't thought of it that way, but that's so true!
Every time I hear a contemporary song in waltz time, I think of Elliot Smith. Modern waltzes are inherently sad, don't you think?
yrp
was this one you havenīt touched for two weeks?
Wow, thatīs beautiful...
I have a quick shameful story to tell...
Yesterday me and my girlfriend celebrated our first year together and I made her a song...she listened and (I think) enjoyed.
Later the same day, I downloaded your song and played.
She said:
"Is this another song you did for me?Thatīs beautiful!"
GRRRRR
Congratulations, Michael!

... I especially like the mollowed out ba de da bits towards the end. Coupled with the choir like backing this makes the whole thing feel so polished countering the half sung vocal. A really classy piece that will live on my iPod for some time to come!
PaddyNavinCaryatid
.. of course I meant "mellowed". Serves me right for posting from my Windows laptop!

you got the trigger finger! How do you like it? I was a little scared by some of the reviews on its quality. Hopefully you'll have no issues.
Sweet little song. Expect nothing less from you!
Keep up the great work. Let me know what you figure out on the TF!
Vic Holman
boy this swings. great joyous sound. i like how you approached the chorus.
what really kills me here is the fantastic walking, or waltzing, bass line.
ooh!

Great feeling in this track. Love your singing and the flowing pace of the background. Excellently made, heavenly arrangement, enchanting!! Bravo!!!

Incredible song.
Love the singing and general feel to this.
Top, top work!
all too fast. Soak up every moment. There's a sadness to this. Maybe just my simple-minded interpretation. A beauty.

The title suits it well.
I like the lyrics. Actually, I pretty much always like your lyrics.
At least the cut off ending works.

this is such a sweet song...i love the busy bass/drums under the soft choral vocals, i love the poppy strings shooting up from the piano - the whole thing reminds me of one of those kid toys that they pull or push and brightly colored bits and pieces pop up into a clear globe as the wheels turn. The lyrics are perfect - just like parenthood - sweetly sentimental and brutally honest by turns. really well done, thanks for the DL...
peacepiano
Refreshing sound. We need more waltzs!!
Ooh ooh oohs are kind of Pink Floydish but the rest is lighter, almost Beatle like. Cool.
Thanks

rock waltzes are some of my favorite tunes. love the violin plucks. i have a trigger finger too but could never get it working properly with GB. Perhaps I'll try again. Drums sound great. Really dig the bgvox and choir. can really identify with those lyrics too. great cutoff ending - really works with the theme. well done.

the emotional weight matched with the light swing creates a really wonderful dynamic. Reminds me a bit of the work of Michel Legrand - that happy/sad french sensibility with the swingle feel. Excellent post. Now I have to read up on trigger finger and wish I had one.

Just one thing: it would be nice if you added mp3 tags in the Logic bounce so that when the download opens up in iTunes it's not just called "Output 1-2" by an unknown artist. Very simple to do in the bounce dialog.
Other than that this is a super good song.
Mckenzie
this is amazing. I just love those choir bv's. They go perfectly with your ooh's. I love everything about this, the drums, the walking type bass, vocals, great lyrics and from my monitors the production sounds flawless. I couldn't critique this if i tried. downloaded and Fav'd.
Thanks for this absolute GEM

the pizzicato-esque strings are great. I've been trying to fit them in something of mine but cant get them to fit. Again great song, on my 3rd listen (in a row!)cheers

Everything I'd have said was covered by other reviewers, and said with more style. Still, I just want to add that anything in non-4/4 is a treat to hear, especially in the 'rock' category.
VicDiesel
A good tune, well played and arranged.
This flows remarkably well for a rock waltz. Too many drummers don't know what to do with anything but 4/4 time, so 3/4 usually becomes boom-clap-clap. This is very pleasant to listen to.
(The voices are cool, the pizzicato strings too fake sounding. But that's just my opinion.)
The Orbiting
I saw it was by you and a waltz and the thought, "3/4 time and it's by michael, that is going to RULE," went through my head. I so love it when I'm right. One of my favorite songs in the world is Waltz #2 XO by Eliot Smith, so I have a thing for 3/4 songs to start with, but you really killed this one. The choirs, your vocals are perfectly laid back and swing beautifully with those drums. What a lovely bitttersweet melody to go with those INCREDIBLY tightly-written lyrics. This is an instant all-time MJ fave for me.
five_extra_arms
I really like the whole feel of this waltz. I've enjoyed the emotion of the imagery and your vocal treatments are wonderful.
This is a really great production, man. Glad to see you having so much fun with Logic Express. I opened it once and closed it up about 10 minutes later. Since then I only have eyes for GarageBand. Once I figure that out, I might take a peek again, but no promises.

Reminds me of pink floyd (the wall), radiohead and the stranglers (golden brown), however it also sounds very unique and very pleasant to listen to. Lovely track.

Beautiful is all I can think to say. I love the lyrics. This is permanently in my Itunes.

not to like one of your songs. Love the bass in this I almost feel like getting up and twirling around. When you sing ooh time to let it go itremind me of pink floyd the wall hope that it dont offend. anyay a very good song!
estellie
Experiment success! Sonically, it is a room we can walk into.
Are the "chorus of angel" type harmonies also midi samples?
I think lyrically, this is a gem as is because it is heartfelt, but with a lot of restraint, a palpable tension, which I like. There is so much left unsaid. I don't know if in the future you will complete this (and by that I don't mean ruining the mystery of the story, but just finishing the thought).

Cool song... the waltz is really cool .....
Bob Rodgers
lovely song and very much enjoyed!
Great vocals and harmonies!

I really like the melodies and what's going on musically... but I have to admit the lyrics are captivating. You tell such a full story with just 8 lines but there's still such a mystery to it. That's always a good measure (for me) of quality songwriting. Well done!

Truly, this is one of your best.
